如果你光看外表的话，《奥日与黑暗森林》会给你一种假象：闪闪发光的奥日和他敦实憨厚的继母纳鲁的形象，可能会让你觉得这款游戏只是一款短暂的、精致的、没什么操作难度、只有小清新画面的横版过关游戏，最多顺带讲述一段感人的故事。但事实上并非如此，《奥日和黑暗森林》其实是一款具有挑战、设计巧妙、借鉴《银河战士》《恶魔城》风格的冒险游戏，玩家必须具备快速的反应、手眼协调能力和对时机的把握，才能探索并拯救这片充满秘密的森林。此外，游戏的动人交响乐也时时刻刻都在撩拨我们的心弦。
