Not the drug empire sim it looks like. The difficulty and lack of player control is absurd.

You hit your head against the wall until one of you cracks. That's the gameplay loop.

Where's the fun?

Great game, 8/10. Learns nothing from modern games, but is great it you want more Igvania.

Major caveat: REALLY grindy, and makes some really dumb decisions about the placement of key items. So, like the older games, you might need a guide to find that one thing you need to progress.

Also WAAAY better with mods. I've published a few on Nexus[www.nexusmods.com] and IMO they are essential.

My mods:
- Fix the abysmal drop rates - some enemy drops are 1%, and you need multiple copies of the items they drop.
- Make the dismantling part of crafting more fun -- it was severely nerfed early on, but they took balancing to the extreme and neutered an otherwise great mechanic.
- Tell you when special effects items have -- the vanilla item descriptions are incredibly obscure, and sometimes misleading.

If you play with mods you'll have a great ol' time. If not you might get frustrated, but it depends on how you want to play.

I'm only 5 hours in, and I love it already. You feel fast and furious, with upgrades and new weapons coming constantly.

This is the first combo system I've felt actively engaged with. Fast travel lets you dart around the map, sustaining your combo, and what initially feels like a frantic rush soon turns into fluid, highly focused, split-second decision making.

9/10 highly recommend!

A tedious slog. Shows its old-school roots, but doesn't apply the lessons it should have learned by now.

5/10

Detailed breakdown below.

Compared to the original:
What was once an immersive world is now distinctly artificial. This previously intelligent game now feels cookie-cutter and bland.

The purposeful systems of the old game are replaced with janky, under-developed attempts to be modern -- aside from the liberating move away from single screens, which itself causes a ton of new issues.
  • Gone is the foreboding atmosphere, with grit and menace replaced with garish post-processing.
  • The world-worn GUIs now look like an afterthought.
  • Mudokons now chatter stupidly, repeating the same 10-or-so voice clips on loop.
  • The quicksave is downgraded from Exoddus, wrestling control away from the player by respawning you from the game's checkpoint, rather than your own quicksave.
  • Half-step movement replaces the original's deliberate precision. Similarly, aiming throwables is now free-hand, with only a short line showing the direction.
  • Mines are now a pain to disable, requiring constant quicksaves to brute-force your way past them.
  • The RNG introduced by the new physics makes the consequence of your actions unpredictable.
As a whole, it feels like a soulless imitation: Mimicking the original game without understanding what made it so special.

And with New N Tasty lacking all the mechanics, improvements and world-building that Exodus brought, it feels like a massive step backward.

Considered in its own right:
Most of the game takes place outside of the factory, which is the best part. The outside parts really drag (especially the Scrab levels where the environments look very samey). I just wanted to get back to the good bits, with possessions and tricking enemies.

When you do return to the factory, you do so with a new power - but it's rarely used, and sometimes is a hindrance. You don't feel like you're a supped-up Abe, just the same guy as before. It's hardly a fitting reward for hours of work. And then it's all over so quickly, with the game ending just a few hours after.

There's a new mechanic where you can toss a coin. It's mentioned briefly in the intro that you can throw them, but their use as distraction items isn't mentioned. Commanding dogs is mentioned briefly too, but long before you actually need it to progress.

The post-processing effects mentioned above can be toggled by editing an external file, not from within the options themselves. Having to guess what these settings do, then restarting the game each time to test each one, is a real pain (note: I've released a mod on Nexus Mods with screenshots, if you want to compare).

There are too many times when achieving the goal seems random. For example, in the dog command puzzle mentioned above, the enemy you want your dog to attack is offscreen, and your dog can barely reach them. Eventually it did, but after a lot of attempts.

There are a couple of scenes where you need to roll under very low saws. These are always a pain, especially with the new half-step positioning moving you in harms way when you think you should be safe.

As you're leaving the factory, there's a sign that says "stand here and chant". When you do, some text appears -- but it's partly off-screen. This displaced text feels like a representation of the game as a whole: The pieces are there, but they're not in the right place.

In summary: A massive disappointment.

A wonderfully unique platformer/pinball hybrid. I don't like pinball games but I still loved this.

It's not without it's issues though: fast travel points take too long to get back to, you often have to do things repeatedly because the precision required is overtuned, and the grapple swings around too fast.

Recommended for platformer fans looking for something novel, but not for players who feel frustrated easily.

A wonderful game full of charm and character. Lots of customisation, 4 different characters to choose from, great co-op.

I remember playing Castle Crashers with a bunch of university mates years ago. Someone new to gaming joined in, and they (unintentionally) unlocked the achievement for hitting zero enemies in a single level. It's easy to forget how difficult positioning can be for players new to beat 'em ups.

Viking Squad fixes this with laned combat, and it's a game-changer.

You always know exactly which enemies you're going to hit, and which lane you should be in to avoid them. I played this in co-op with someone who is new to games and we had a blast.

Strongly recommended, especially for co-op. Great for playing with a partner or younger sibling.

I really liked this game initially, it's looks great and feels charming.

But about half-way through the 2nd chapter I realised the game was leaning heavily towards timing and memory puzzles.

I have never liked those games where you flip 2 cards to see if they match. The memory puzzles are similar here.

The timing aspect made at least 1 level so far seem unbeatable. Combining both just makes this game less fun. I would guess more mechanics are added that do similar things. It's much harder than it looks.

Definitely not for me, but if you like dealing with stacked mechanics and having to remember lots of things at once, maybe you'll like it.

The enemy design is fantastic, but the combat -- the main feature -- is too bland and repetitive. Maye it gets good later, I was too bored to find out.

I got this in a bundle and was disappointed, if I had paid the full AAA-tier price tag I'd be devastated.
