Early Access Review
If you are looking for a civil war simulation, this is for you. But this is not a game. Visually stunning but lacks comparable features to other civil war games. Your gun not starting loaded is dumb imo. This game is also filled with casual racism, both publicly and privately. The kickstarter awards from years ago still haven't even been released, let alone given to the players who paid.

I won't lie, the game needs some work done. Optimization followed by melee improvements would be my recommendation. Myself and many other from the competitive scenes of similar games have given detailed feedback on corrections to melee and I foresee them being implemented after optimization is worked on.

Aside from that you get a fantastic civil war experience. There is a proper shooting ballistics system with a plethora of different weapons and ammo types you can cater to your play style. You also get a good amount of character customization for your own character. FSE has already demonstrated future modability and there will eventually be steam workshop integration.

There are a multitude of gamemodes with playtested and confirmed servers of up to 500 people for battles. Artillery is deadly in the hands the right person. Skirmishers offer a great opportunity to pick off enemies along fences. Cavalry will be coming in the future.

Having tested this game for a little over a year now, as well as having spent significant time Holdfast, Mount and Blade: Warband Napoleonic Wars, and the North and South mod for warband, I can confidently say that Battle Cry of Freedom is the truest successor to all of these black powder games. It offers the best combination of content and features for everyone to enjoy with a great civil war theme. And this is only the beginning. The dev team may be small, but they are active and involved with the community and will continue to improve their work and push new content for years to come.

If you have any questions about the game or community, feel free to reach out to me. I will give you my honest opinion about anything bcof related.
