Early Access Review
In it's current state, Little Witch Nobeta is a game with an incredible amount of potential, all memes aside. The gameplay is some of the smoothest and most rewarding I've ever had the pleasure of being in possession of, and as someone who has played every Souls game, this is sometimes even better than what it's inspired by if you love timing everything down to the exact frame (I'm a counter magic freak) and learning how to fight each boss is one of the most fun and difficult processes I've went through. I don't know how standard mode looks like so I may have chosen the harder route but being able to beat Monica was super satisfying after a lot of tribulation.

As far as story goes, it's simple, but it relegates a lot of it's storytelling to mystery and we don't know much about the crafted souls, our main enemies thus far, at the moment. I imagine as the story progresses we get to know much more and I really want to know who Nobeta's cat is as well. The character design ranges from simple to complex, but they all seem to mix together really well and they're quite creative. Nobeta's and Monica's designs are fantastic for entirely different reasons; Nobeta's is traditional and does a good job at expressing the classic fantasy protagonist and Monica's is very futurist while remaining in the realm of old-era fantasy, just more complex and more expressive of her manic personality.

There isn't too much I have to say that's bad about this game at all, most are minor nitpicks that will eventually be fixed in due time, like some minor glitches with walls and being able to pass through invisible barriers sometimes to get in to usually inaccessible areas. Regardless of whatever your views are, and yes, I'm looking at a few certain people, you can't say this isn't a possible classic in the works. This game will be more important than ever in a few years and is an exemplary statement from indie developers who are able to make amazing homages to games and communities they love.

Now excuse me, I'm going to keep trying and failing a speedrun of this.

strong 8/10
