Loving this so far. Easy enough to pick up, but I can just tell it's not going to remain easy for long. Graphics are great, yet it runs well and has a very manageable filesize. Scratches the itch I had for an Empire at War-like game with more depth to it without being as needlessly complex (and massive, and unoptimized) as many EaW conversion mods are. Still can't get over how cool being able to zoom in from a 4X game to an RTS game is.

Looks incredible, but doesn't play like it. Gunplay is stiff and pretty unresponsive, worse than Half Life 2's by a fair bit, and the segment is mostly just walking and shooting things, but it's pretty neat for what it is and it absolutely feels like the Source Engine and not Unreal.

Amateur level design with boxy and low-detail maps (including a few spots you can get permanently stuck in), basic puzzles, and next to no story. It feels very untested, like the modder made the maps and shipped them after playing through them once or twice at most. The place doesn't capture the same vibe as the original Portal does. All that being said, I liked this, actually. It felt like Aperture, but more uncomfortable than lonely. I wasn't sure where I was going, what I was doing, what my goal was, I felt, as the title of the mod suggests, lost in Aperture. I hope the modmaker continues learning and making mods, since I feel like they have potential.

I'll go over a list of pros and cons.

Pros:
-It's actually kinda fun
-Has a title-accurate vibe
-I like it

Cons:
-The level design is extremely basic and boxy
-The puzzle design is extremely simple and amateur
-There is absolutely nothing that tells you what your goals are or where you're going
-Confusing alternative routes that branch off into an out-of-place (albeit charming) reference at one point
-The music is tied to the in-game sound slider, not the music slider, and plays on loop throughout most levels, so if you get tired of the song, you have to play through the rest of the level without sound
-There are multiple rooms full of physics props that lag the game
-Certain buttons that you have to interact with are not labeled at all, with no way of knowing that they can or should be pressed as they're not Portal buttons or even Half Life buttons (one example being a single keyboard you can touch to turn something on, where every other keyboard in the game is a prop as usual)
-Fade-to-black level transitions that don't take you somewhere different, a la Hunt Down the Freeman

Overall, it's probably like a 4/10 from a quality standpoint, but from an enjoyment standpoint, I'd give it about a 6.5/10, maybe a 7.

i love seeing people call this a GD ripoff when the original version of this came out in 2009 and GD came out in 2013. this version was on steam before the GD steam version came out. smartest GD players, i swear

Veru fun heist with a great soundtrack and some fantastic weapons. Probably the best DLC we've gotten thus far. I hesitate to say we're back, but if things keep going the way they're going, then we will be back.

Early Access Review
Everything Ready or Not wishes it could be; that being, a fun and engaging experience that doesn't feel completely and utterly unfair at every turn. The AI isn't an aimbot on every single level, there's no nonsense RoE that penalizes you for not letting literal terrorists shoot at you first, the weapon recoil isn't obscene on every single gun, there are no civilians who are completely law-abiding yet refuse to comply with the cops during an active shooter scenario and run directly into the middle of a shootout, guns actually deal damage and guys aren't tanking half a mag of 9mm to an unarmored part of their body without going down, there's none of the patented Ready or Not nonsense to ruin the game experience. I literally only have half an hour in this game and I can already tell that this game is a significantly better product than Ready or Not, and it'll almost definitely stay that way unless the devs really fumble it from here on out. Even though it's kinda janky and has way less polish than Ready or Not, it's so much more enjoyable of an experience. Sure, the AI is kinda stupid, but I'll gladly take stupid AI that's a bit too easy over stupid AI that's got absurd accuracy despite having no firearms training at all and is willing to die for the cause despite being hired private security who'd almost definitely never shoot at cops. The Ready or Not devs need to start taking notes, because this is how you make a fun game.

Big thanks to my friend for gifting this to me out of nowhere and startling me with the Steam notification sound. You're a hero.

I saw someone say that this was the Who Killed Captain Alex of Half Life 2 mods. They are wrong. Who Killed Captain Alex is funny and entertaining despite being terrible. This mod is just plain awful. Terrible map design, terrible voice acting, this awful depth of field-type blur that you can't turn off, extremely overpowered enemies that will shred you in a few seconds. I cannot believe that the dev genuinely thought that this was good enough to warrant paying to put it on Steam.

UPDATE (12/2/2024):
Turns out the dev is willing to put in code that specifically prevents specific users from playing if they're known to have shat on the dev's mods in the past (this specifically happened with OVERCHARGED). The devs are malicious. Do not play this.

The sun is leaking.

No. Just no. The AI is terrible, the game balance is terrible, there is AI-generated content, and the devs are simply not good st their jobs. Void scooped up a lot of talented modders for games and made them work on this slop. There is no reason for the AI to be this bad, no excuse for it to have arguably gotten worse after years of updates. I do not believe three guys selling 3d printed gun mods to pay for their elderly mother's cancer treatment would open fire on a SWAT team and refuse to surrender even after being shot. I do not believe a teenage junkie robbing a gas station would turn around and immediately start shooting like John Wick after being caught off-guard by a 5-man SWAT team all with rifles trained on his face. The devs have made no attempt to make the AI realistic for the scenario they are in, and they all default to using the same zealot terrorist who will die for the cause AI. Ready or Not is, simply put, not ready. It is not worth your time or money.

A fun and enjoyable 2D survival-crafting/exploration game that has unfortunately been abandoned by its devs. It's got decent mechanics with a much higher emphasis on exploration and discovery than combat, which is admittedly barebones. The story is a pretty generic lone hero sci-fi story, but it's fun enough for what it is.

This game had so much unrealized potential. In its current state, it's fun and worth getting on sale if it interests you, but there are echoes of what it could've been and it's a bit depressing knowing there was so much potential that the devs simply didn't take advantage of. The modding scene is pretty good and adds a bunch of cool stuff, but unfortunately, with how the game is built and implemented, major overhauls in game functions are few and far between since they're too difficult for most modders to do.
