I really can't explain just how satisfying it is to manipulate the world in this game. It has a learning curve, since there isn't really any tutorial, but it's worth it to stick it out. The excavators are really a key item - they not only bring you resources, they allow you to access other parts of your island.
You'll get pretty good at at using your excavators and pickups to make ramps that allow your machines to hit the other levels.
I've had to start all over again 4-5 times now, since you don't know much at first you'll end up building all wrong and it can be really really hard to recover if you mess up - but I dont mind at all. It's really satifying watching your little island at work and seeing it progress.

HELP! I DON'T KNOW WHY I CAN'T STOP PLAYING THIS GAME

If you're a fan of Dwarf Fortress, you'll love this game - mostly. It plays a lot like a 3D, simplified DF - and I love it!

Being just released, I hope we'll see a bunch of additions to the game - I'd love to see raiders, offensive/defensive structures and a few other things that you'd find in DF.

Personally, once you figure out the formula you can sustain a settlement forever, and it's almost too easy, so it sort of peters out after several years. I think this would be a killer game if priced at $14.99, this just doesn't seem like $20 worth of game, but I'm banking that there will be more added + community mods.

Hands down, get this game if you like the simulation genre.
