Pretty good game.

Pros:

- Dialog options for the protagonist were very well written. I really enjoyed the lines my character delivered.
- The story seemed to flow with your choices. I expected to screw something up but no matter what I did the game gave me a path forward. I enjoyed the freedom. I also enjoyed playing an insane character in a setting where it really made sense. You could easily have snapped or have brain damage. I haven’t had so much fun killing idiots in any game ever. It was... cathartic :P
- I liked the companions Ellie and Felix. Especially Ellie.
- Probably has a lot of replay value. I noticed there are multiple endings etc. At the very least there’s two sides
- Gear looked pretty cool.
- Skills, weapon mods, the works were fun.

Neutral:

- Bad guys are bad. Reaaally baaaad! ‘Hahaha! We’re killing puppies!’ bad. Didn’t get if the writers thought it funny or were trying to make an anti-establishment point.
- Have you ever been in a segregated environment? Girls school? Female convent? The world felt exactly like that. There is 1 man, he is the plumber. :) *

Bad:

- It’s not polished. Small issues like: in certain maps the character marker disappeared. Inventory management, sorting items, items comparisons etc are missing. The quest marker showing outside the map on more than one occasions. My black hair is black on the char panel but white in game. White! Nothing gamebreaking though.

* My character in this case. I did quests for Mother Superior and Sister Patience and the sister in charge of the convents finances.

Good story. Fun combat. And Orlais. Overdone. Overcoloured. Divine. Also crazy crafting hours if you're trying to colour match your teams clothes. They should not be the same but... go together. They should make a statement. Let me check those textures again. Something in red would be more 'us' don't you think? Was THAT what you wore Lady Lala's soirée? Good Lord! And yes, that sword has good stats but look at the hilt! Can't kill a dragon with mismatched swords. Now... if we craft one with... wheres that schematic? Right! We are the Inquisition. We should look good!

Yeah, I played dress up a lot.

Did I mention a ball? And a duel for my lady's hand? And a clean romance with the sweetest, cutest girl since Aerie? The only thing missing was playing the lute beneath Josie's window on a starry night

For Georgian / regency romance fans only Play a human noble, romance Josephine. This is the closest I've found to the era feel. Its faaaaaaar but close-est. Feel free to PM anything that's an RPG and comes closer. Im a Heyer, Austen, Balogh fan.

There are some games that are FREAKING BRILLIANT AND BETTER THAN MOST TITLES WITH 500 TIMES THE BUDGET!

*Deep breath*

- Main Campaign:

The story: is brilliant and as far as my gaming experience goes: unique. The title ‘Legends of Eisenwald’ is not just for show. You really get to hear the gossip, the superstitions and the legends of the world. To me it felt like I was a child again with a storybook of heroes and princesses and evil wizards and hags in huts hidden in dark parts of the woods. The mists hide evil creatures, the bells toll, the ghosts haunt remote ruins. And it’s written sooo well. I loved it. There are translation issues but I found them minor. Just go with the feel.

The world: Very well done. What you would expect of the setting. You have the landowners, the merchant class, the church and the peasants. No one is evil and no one is a saint. There are certain cases of clear cut right and wrong but mostly everyone is trying to survive and stay on top as much as they can. I liked that. The writers don’t take sides and don’t feel preachy. They give you a world and let you decide.

The research: I am no expert but I was impressed. The weapons are realistic. The setting carefully done. You meet for example ‘run away peasants’ and this is probably the first time I read about a yatagan in a game. The women in your party are wearing long dresses and have their hair covered. Lots of details I really enjoyed. Also, male soldiers and clergy / female healers and witches. I don’t bicker about historical accuracy in all games but it’s nice to have. I don’t care to play modern thinking people in medieval armour. Which brings us to...

The hero. Simply put he’s well written. He is also occasionally tough to like. If you enjoy reading books of the era: the writers got the arrogance bit spot on. He radiates it. He is also involved in a very personal quest that made me really connect with him. He makes some hard decisions, he is not altruistic. And if one steps back and thinks about it: neither are most of us. I liked him. And his journey is written well and doesn’t fall into the usual ‘feel good’ category. Imaginary scenario. You want to run into the flaming orphanage to save the kids? You’ll die, your companion says. In any other game you’d get away with it. In Eisenwald you will die. You’ll get a statue but you will die. Game over. You can’t have your cake and eat it. So when the hero walks past that orphanage, runs away from that battle, leaves someone behind... he just an average guy. A believable one. That said: there is A LOT of opportunities to be good and heroic and save the orphans and stand up for your friends and help people. Just not EVERY time.

The combat: Well, combat is not my strong point. I can’t really review combat properly. I liked the way it was done, I enjoyed levelling and equipping different units and trying out different strategies. I’m 70 hours in and still learning new things. It had issues though. One thing was having to attack whoever is closest: there were points where the closest was also immune to my weapon. Didn’t happen often but was frustrating. I had to look up the weapons abilities in a guide. And I could do with a bit more variety in gear... maybe. Simply put: I loved it but it needs fixing. To be honest this holds for everything in the game. It is like Age of Decadence in that sense. Brilliant but flawed. And you can just hope the devs of both games will get to make more games and improve on their ideas. High hopes :)

- Masquerade: I found it quite enjoyable but I felt it lacked a bit of information. Then again, we don’t get all the info we want real life before making a decision, so I’m assuming it was probably deliberate. Interesting endings. I got two different ones, maybe there’s more.

- Cursed Castle: This one is a sandbox. Not an easy one, I thought but I felt quite satisfied on completing it. Really, REALLY satisfied! I believe this one easily warrants a second playthrough if you want to optimise your party.

- Soundtrack: It’s lovely. It fits with the era and it’s a pleasure to listen to. Got it separately and have been listening to it when not playing.

- Artbook: Very nice. It has various concepts, drafts, art you won’t see in game. Also the cutscene stories and the artists thoughts and research. Basically, all I want from an artbook.

Aptly named ‘supporter’ pack. Thought the game was fun, so why not? Just be aware that the skins are mostly recolours / slightly changed and the artbook is not out yet. The devs are quite clear on that though: 'get it if you wanna support us'.

I do so... that's that :)

It’s a good game. I guess. That said: it bores me. If you want to know if maybe you’re not interested read on. If you got a Witcher 3 shrine over your bed... send me a photo. Where was I?

Geralt bores me. He sounds bored himself. It rubs off. I’ve started this game 3 times and I always leave it after a while. There’s doom and gloom and no fun. And a preset main character with a dark tragic past so convoluted you have to read additional material to figure out and he’s a loner and edgy and sarcastic. I play happy, outgoing characters that talk and laugh and... don’t glare and grunt. Too much glaring and grunting makes me roll my eyes.

I also like a world where not every NPC is an ungrateful, hypocritical, piece of crap. So I can actually care about them.

Yen’s boobs are not incentive enough, never liked the readhead whose name I forget but apparently I screwed and since I repeatedly screwed every girl in the brothel I think I’m done with the entertainment value here.

Cheers!

I can't even start with all that is wrong with this. Imagine the strongest possible language. The general idea is great, the implementation is a horror.

Let me just say that after 2 hours of torture trying to take out guards on a terrain you can't scout cause its packed with guards, respawning about 20 times and running half a map to get back to the guards area I finally kill all the guards. I lower the lift -finally!- but before I can get the Item off it, the lift goes back up with me. Then the game decides to stop rendering the building and my character. I can't get back down. I quit. It takes me back to the last checkpoint all guards alive.

I am not going through 2 hours of this again. It was not fun the first time.

Enough is enough.

Puzzles are a pain. Every area is a maze. You get stuck on the simplest things. Finally, the humour doesn't appeal to me. Overlord was funny. Overlord 2 is making fun of certain types of people. It felt -for lack of a better word- mean. Not to mention the continuous comments Gnarl has on any women you meet. Love an adult joke but this guy sounds like a creep.

Dum de dum dum... 34 hours into Overlord: Raising Hell and the main story done, getting to an actual review.

How I'm feeling: Imagine a cartoon character bouncing off the walls yelling 'weeee' at the top of his lungs. Also... EPIC ENDING! Back to reality.

- The humour: Its funny. Its hilarious. I was laughing out loud half the time. Keep in mind that I enjoy Pratchett (this was written by his daughter) and find the Divinity Series to be Divine. I thought 'satirical parody' is quite an accurate description of this game. You have a mistress that the writer described as 'an evil Mary Poppins'. I loved it. Random interactions of the minions with the environment are extremely funny too.

- The hero: Blissfully silent. He does not have a single line of dialog, though I do believe I heard him grunt once. Grunting is good. Grunting is practical. Grunting means I don't have a whiny protagonist with a tragic backstory. The Overlord is a man of action. ONLY action.

Did I mention your character looks cool? Amazing cool? You're a 6ft plus guy in heavy armour. Yeah, he's most certainly an avatar I would pick. Your armour looks great, greater or divine.

- The story: Its quite simple with a very nice reveal towards the end. Given that I wasn't bombarded with lore and boring drama throughout (ott drama rules) those few lines made an impact. You can be Lawful Evil or Chaotic Evil. I felt like Gru from the Minions movie evil. Have yet to try a murderhobo playthrough.

- Combat and exploration: Brilliant and brilliantly frustrating. I understand it may work better with a controller. You control your character and 4 different types of minions with different abilities. It made things interesting... when they behaved. You have to figure things out and it may take some thought to find the optimal way of dealing with an obstacle both in combat and while exploring the world. I actually felt excited to explore a new area, fighting the bosses etc. Its what one should feel when they play a game. Passion. Curiosity. And winning the boss battles... priceless.

- Saves: None. It Auto-saves in 1 slot. You have to complete the 'stage' reach a 'checkpoint' before it saves. At least three times I quit cause of a mistake (like killing someone cause I targeted the person instead of the item next to them) and had to replay the area. I didn’t mind. And I rage quit more than once and payed the price. I even rage quit the final battle.

In my top 10 games of all time. It's been a while since a game really excited me and I just didn't want to put it down. Well done!

Must play. I'm sure others have said it better. My point:

FREEEEEEEEEEEDOM! Freedom to roam where you will. Freedom to tell NPCs where to put their quests. Freedom to collect every blue cup in Skyrim and fill your bedroom with them. Freedom to act. Freedom to sit back and do nothing. Freedom to kill dragons. Freedom to let the dragons be and kill bunnehs instead. Freedom to save the world Freedom to let Skyrim go to hell cause you couldn't care less. Those blue cups now are important. I hear they sell a different pattern in Solitude.

Oh and let us not forget when you are running somewhere, anywhere and you come across a view that makes you stop and take 50 screenshots.
