Unless you want to play the game solo, save your $5. Couldn't get the game to work with friends. We just decided it wasn't worth the effort.

Persona 5 (2016) released just as I was prepping to head off to college and I couldn't bring the family PlayStation with me. I resorted to experiencing it secondhand through YouTube playthroughs when I found free time during that semester.

Years later, playing through Royal on PC was such a wonderful experience. This is hands down the best JRPG game I've played in recent years. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Good story, but I'm not too big on visual novels. I got tired of playing the game and watched the anime adaptation. Each story each arc only took 20 minutes to get through.

Every night I shed tears of agony in my one bedroom studio apartment, grinding away at Lost Sectors and the Crucible, dedicating every fiber of my being to getting my light level a single point higher... maybe even two.

In a title that boasts being open world I want some fun side quests to explore said world. The missions I did (albeit being only two hours into the game) were so bland. All the quest givers are spirits that aren't emotive by any definition. Talk to NPC, do a menial task for them to help them move on to the afterlife or whatever, negligible reward. And the combat? It was so 1-dimensional I wanted to avoid it any chance I had.

It seems like a genuinely decent game with a passionate team behind it, but it didn't tick enough boxes for me to spend any more time waiting for it to get better. I love love love the concept behind it, but it's just not for me.

Good story. It plays out like a movie despite the game mechanics feeling incredibly dated.

I haven't finished the game yet, but I feel the need to talk about my experience with it so far.

I'm not someone with a lot of... what I hesitate to call "gamer stamina". I can't sit down for hours at a time and work on beating a singleplayer title. This is especially true if I feel like I'm not progressing. Don't get me wrong, it's not a boring game by any means. The whole concept of being in a time loop feels like Arkane Lyon took the constant use of F5 F9 in Dishonored and made it a core mechanic. I just got super bored with redoing the same days over and over again. It's not working for me anymore.

I'm a sucker for card games so I picked this up for the quirky mechanics I saw in the trailer. Lots of unexpected developments in the 9 hours I played.

Honestly, the story was very in-your-face during acts 2 and 3. I understand that the point of it was to be an engaging twist, but act 2's gameplay was very okay at best, and having to sit in front of P03 in act 3 had me wishing for the game to end. Thankfully I had a few friends watching along who kept me going. The gameplay and visual styles in acts 1 and 3 were solid, but the 2D style of act 2 made me lose interest a bit. Not the perfect game, but a fun experience overall.

Unrelated to the game itself, but I noticed that someone is porting for the base version of the card game into Tabletop Simulator. Check that out if you're interested in playing with friends.
