Will undoubtedly be remembered by time as a paragon of the RPG-fantasy genre. We will be unlikely to see another game surpass it in decision-driven storytelling; it surpasses even Fallout New Vegas and Mass Effect in this aspect.

Does it make for a good art piece, POC, and tech demo? Yes
Does it make for an engaging video game from beginning to end? Absolutely not.

What an amazing game. Hypnagogia is the passion project of developer, director, artist, and visionary, Sodaraptor. The controls may be a little loose at times, and the graphics will take some getting used to, but at its core, Hypnagogia is a charming, unique, and wondrous delve into the surreal world of dreams. Catchy music, likable characters, intelligent dialogue, and some of the most imaginative environment design I have ever seen in a game yet. It will grip you from the moment you enter the serene crystal chasms of the beginning, to its emotional end. Not to mention the impressive range the game shows by including some genuinely terrifying horror levels in between.

9/10. Hypnagogia now has a permanent place in my heart. I only wish that the creator will consider adding some more player contribution to felling the "final boss".

Sodaraptor, if you're reading this, hit me up. I'd love to talk to you.

I am not kidding you when I tell you this is one of the greatest games I've ever played. There is nothing like it out there, and there may never be. Aesthetics of which the likes you have never seen. Absurdity, surrealism, wonder as you explore a world you will know absolutely nothing about and it only continues to perplex as the feverdream proceeds in unfolding around you. It has no beginning, middle, or end. It is a state of presence - a state which may cause some to recollect the artist's blurb on the piece:

"“What disturbs and depresses young people is the hunt for happiness on the firm assumption that it must be met with in life. From this arises constantly deluded hope and so also dissatisfaction." (thank you @tsuon for the exerpt)

There is nothing to seek out, as Couillard implies. But unlike Couillard, I feel no state of dissatisfaction. There is nothing quite like the feeling of not knowing what could possibly come next, and that is the very thing this game delivers. Game-play length be damned.

Let's start off by saying that this appears to have been developed, directed, and pretty much everything done by one person. That's pretty outstanding, and it shows; some good, some bad ways. Some of the most creative and surreal work I've seen in a game, period - it's not afraid to go "there" wherever "there" is. The skrokalajar (or however it's spelled), the race, and final moments are just astounding. The game also seems to promote an anti-capitalist message - which is somewhat ironic seeing the game on the store page.

It's a short game, roughly 2 hours, but if you're an achievement hunter that will probably keep you occupied a little longer.

I am disappointed in that there appear to be a lot of pre-made assets in the game, bodies ragdoll randomly, the controls are unpolished, characters skate around as they walk, clip through each other and themselves in animation - it needs more work. There are also some moments where the momentum of the game comes to a grinding halt as you're wondering what exactly you need to do next (what happened to the map?!).

Honestly, get the game for the second level, it's truly something else. Shout outs to OneyPlays for recommending.

I hope this becomes the next big thing. Even if you're not winning you can't help but smile.

THINGS I LIKE:
-Boss battles are on ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ point, hard as hell, but always fair. Every hit of damage you take is your fault.
~~~~THE MUSIC ~~~~ is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing, sometimes I play this game just to hear a track
- The art style: it's all neon and glowy and 80's miami vice. Except with samurais. Cyberpunk samurais.
THINGS I DONT LIKE:
-the long, long, LONG walks between boss fights. I get how they're trying to be all ambient and stuff and try to immerse you and stuff, but it's deffinitely not working. We're talking slowww ass walking that will leave you wondering "is it almost done yet?"
-The Architect: one of the main characters, he flaps his gums while you're doing those long walks and most of what he says goes along the lines of "you're mad, you should be mad, bad man ahead, kill him" not to mention his costume design looks like Boy George trying to be the bunny from Donnie Darko. Just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ why.
-Trigger dodges: you have the choice on Xbox Controller of either using the a button or trigger to dodge, the trigger feels a lot less responsive and will take some getting used to.
THE VERDICT:
Furi is definitely worth playing, some of the director's choices make me scratch my head, but Furi shines in it's main attraction: boss fights. A true challenge, but always fair.
