some dialogue can be sped up/skipped, others can't. a lot of times I find myself just waiting, hands off the kb/m, for the game to finish the scene.

- Great for nostalgia and still looks pretty good if you get the HD mod
- Character moves way too slow. Putting cinderblocks on your feet doesn't really add anything to the horror factor IMO
- As gimmicky as the evidence collecting stuff is, there aren't enough investigation games like this
- Plot is nonsense
- Played the whole game without the taser. Didn't mean to, just kept forgetting it

  • When I first played this game in 2003 it was a technical achievement that made my PC run hot. At the time of writing, while its still perfectly functional the game has begun to look empty and sparse, even as someone who regularly replays the original Deus Ex
  • For whatever reason, this game handled depicting World War 2 far better than it's modern equivalent (the brazenly titled Call of Duty WWII). While the droning heroic background tunes are a bit much, quotes about the tragedy of war are shown when you die, and each of your fellow soldiers has a name.
  • Most likely best suited for nostalgia playthroughs nowadays, but only if you're okay with supporting Activision's ridiculous pricing scheme for 16-year-old annualized franchises.

  • I really like the art style of roughly the first half of the campaign. It was a lot like the original with some strange geometry mixed in. It appears that the map designers were at the height of their comfortability with the engine and editor during this map packs development.
  • Strange sprinkles of ancient Egyptian-inspired enemies and map design toward the end, followed by a dragon. Confused aesthetic.
  • It seemed easier and shorter than the first map pack, but that may have been me getting better at the game after just finishing the last mission pack and the original.

I am incapable of communicating the depth of my love for this game.

  • Slower pace, not as frantic as Quake 1
  • The railgun is a fantastic addition.
  • Great mod community. Quake 2 XP is one of the best mods of its kind.
  • Deserves some sort of credit for establishing the Strogg and the rest of what would become Quake lore.
  • Backtracking through levels is a terrible idea.
  • Much scarier than Quake 1. Every enemy is a different attempt by the Strogg to repurpose your buddies. Some maps have several unmodified human prisoners crying and smacking their own heads, sometimes just walking out in the open. "Assimilation-core" sci-fi.
  • I don't like the map design in a lot of areas. In the original Quake there were plenty of areas where I endlessly retraced my steps. In Quake II these moments are far more frequent. After playing through the campaign entirely, I believe this to be a product of the unoriginal industrial sci-fi aesthetic. Everything blended together and it was hard to tell if I was retracing my steps unless there were corpses to mark my path.
  • I'll always be a little disappointed that they dropped the aesthetic of the first. As I understand it this is a divisive issue in the Quake community. In my opinion, playing this right after the original Quake and both map packs is a bit of a shock. The aesthetic is entirely different and some of the fluidity of the first is lost.

  • Console-ified to the very core. Most aspects of the game are painfully cut down to be run on consoles.
  • IMO a fantastic continuation of the Deus Ex plot, beyond compare to both Eidos Montreal games.
  • Universal ammo is unnecessary and cripples combat.
  • Satisfyingly combines different consequences of different Deus Ex 1 endings
  • A lot of amazing ideas are in this game but are either half realized or half delivered. Could have gone down in history as a worthy successor if they were given more time and were allowed to focus on PC.
  • Some story pacing and dialogue seems rushed, some performances sound like they were asked to speak at 1.5x speed.
  • Would only be a worthwhile playthrough for the most diehard fans eager to see what happens next in the Deus Ex universe, as written by Deus Ex writer Sheldon Pacotti himself.

  • Great reminder of how DLC used to be: pay money for more game.
  • Pretty long for an expansion.
  • Ramps up the difficulty a lot.
  • Slightly superior map design.
