This is a lot of fun. You play a border guard, checking documentation within a time limit as people try to enter your country. It starts off straightforward, but eventually you'll have a ton of information to check as quickly as possible, as you're paid based on the number of people you successfully process, and you need the money to keep your family fed and well.
The compelling element is that you'll meet a variety of freedom fighters, criminals, general oddballs, and just normal people that you can help or report, depending on your personal morality and need for money. There are a few moments that will tug on your heartstrings as you wonder whether it's worth allowing someone through who may suffer dire consequences otherwise.
There's also a story threading through the game, as it seems as though your country is falling apart and it might be pertinent to take some action to protect yourself and your family if it happens. How you handle it is up to you.
It's a good game to dip in and out of, and can be finished in a few hours, but there's plenty of replay value as you experiment with the different choices you can make. It takes a lot of concentration to play, and you'll spend time juggling documents around a limited space, but that's part of the experience of working in an intense bureaucracy.
Big recommendation from me; I don't play it often, but it's always a good time when I come back to it. It's a good deal at full price.

Never played the original the first time round, and it's aged really poorly in a variety of ways, so was an excellent candidate for being remade. I'm enjoying it a great deal, despite there being a number of cosmetic glitches (frantically twitching corpses that fall from the sky when you revisit previous areas, for one).

Understandably, It feels like a template for System Shock 2 in a number of ways, and it seems that Nightdive have tried to leave the game as close to the original experience as possible. SS2 didn't always do a great job of pushing the player towards their next goal, but this game doesn't try at all - you're given an overarching goal of stopping SHODAN from destroying the Earth, but you just randomly wander the ship hoping to stumble upon something that helps you toward that goal. No modern pointers and hand-holding here; just get on with it and hope for the best. This leads to amusing side effects like accidentally pressing the "DESTROY EARTH" button that can be found casually hanging out in one room, minding its own business!

Once you're used to that, it's a fun shooter with an interesting visual design that bridges the gap between pixellated Nineties graphics and modern Unreal Engine games. The soundtrack's also very pleasant, with an impressive and unintrusive dynamic score and the distant, unnerving enemy noises that you'd expect from this kind of game. I also liked the Descent-style cyberspace sequences, although it's rare that you ever know why you're doing them until they're complete, and the puzzles used to unlock doors are fun (and can be skipped via the use of items that can be occasionally found).

I've been surprised by the variety in enemies too - there are far more than SS2, and it feels as though I still have a fair bit of the ship to explore. Enemy AI isn't necessarily the best - you'll find plenty of ways to exploit them and occasionally find one of them unsuccessfully trying to walk through walls - but this feels in-keeping with the retro nature of the game and they're still very capable of thoroughly murdering you.

So yeah, it's a good time if you're into immersive sims like SS2 and Prey, and is also something of a historical curio for video game fans. Just bear in mind that you're going to be doing a lot of exploring without guidance or you might find yourself frustrated. I know Nightdive are still working on an enhanced edition of System Shock 2, but hopefully they'll be able to do a full remake at some point as they've done an excellent job here and SS2 was never a pretty game even in 1999.

Totally brainless mass slaughter isometric shooting gallery - it's a lot of fun if you just want to turn your brain off and wipe out hundreds of thousands of zombies and weird alien creatures. There are RPG lite stat points to be allocated, items to be bought in an inter-level shop, and a slowly increasing arsenal of upgradeable weapons that do outrageous amounts of damage. You'll find a turret gun deeper in the game, which is just ridiculous in the carnage it creates. Every level ends up with a thick carpet of gore and bodies.

You won't play it all the time - I've maybe played through it half a dozen times in a decade - but there's little quite so satisfying if you're in the mood, and you can blow through the whole thing in a few hours. An essential part of any library belonging to people who like to shoot things now and then.

I liked this quite a bit, despite a few annoyances and glitches. It's a post-Edwardian Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines with a far more serious tone, albeit not quite as good. You make decisions about which of the residents of Spanish Flu ravaged London to kill for blood, while trying to maintain the health and population of the area to avoid complete societal collapse. Naturally there's a lot of chatting to characters and finding out their secrets, for which you gain XP (especially if you decide to kill them.
Combat's probably the most annoying part of the game, feeling very clunky, fiddly, and a bit of a chore. You get a series of RPG-style upgrades to choose from, with some being much more effective than others, and you'll probably want to choose them just to get through the fighting quicker - it's really not a game for people primarily looking for a good action experience, and some fights can drag on for way too long.
The world's very atmospheric though, and a lot of sombre fun to explore. I liked the soundtrack, and there's some really good voice acting here too, especially for the protagonist. There's also some replayability for those who enjoyed their first playthrough, with different story events and endings dependant on your actions, who you kill, and the knowledge you gain from talking to characters/raking through their closets.
The game's often on sale for well under £10 these days, which makes it a bit of a steal in my book. Very much recommended at that kind of price, but you should probably try before you buy before spending the current £35 RRP, as the combat will just make the game unpleasant and dull for some players.

This was great, full of little easter eggs and suchlike, and a lovely gift from the devs. You have to appreciate little presents like this, especially when so much thought has clearly gone into it.

Thanks guys, you'll be getting my money whenever you have a new one of these out from now on. I had no idea that I needed leonine exploration in my life, yet here we are.

Big improvement on Cat Search in Medieval Times. Nice outline sketch cartoon style vista of New York that gradually fills in the colour as you discover cats in each area, and the sound of the city gradually builds too. The moggies miaow when you're zoomed in to let you know there's a feline hidden somewhere on the current screen, just in case you're struggling. Plenty of references to discover and the moving vehicles are a nice touch. Doesn't take long to find all the kitties, but there's a random mode to return to.

A lot of thought and work went into this, and it's a gentle and amusing pleasure if you like the occasional hidden object puzzler only to bemoan the lack of cats in the genre. I haven't even tried the other elements to the game yet, but it's a definite buy for me at this price, and I'll be buying the author's future games if this is the kind of thing we can look forward to.

You search for cats in medieval times. The truth in advertising people strike again.

Not recommended for those with poor eyesight. The rest of us will still need a magnifying glass; those cats are tricky.

Edit: I now know that it's possible to zoom in on the picture. D'oh.

One of the big daddies of boomer shooters - slightly disappointed a few folk on release because it wasn't an actual sequel to Quake, but still got top reviews and sold millions of early 3D accelerator cards like the Voodoo2. Eventually suffered some mild backlash for being grey and remembered as a bit dull.

Felt like a bit of an odd choice for Night Dive to remaster in their own modern engine, but this is almost certain to be my bargain of the year, considering I got it as a free upgrade to an existing Quake 2 purchase (with the original version still included if required). Everything's updated and polished while still looking, feeling, and sounding like the original, and I swear it's actually more of a blast than ever. I didn't enjoy it this much in 1997.

You also get the two mission packs, which I never played, but I'm several levels into The Reckoning and it's just as much fun. There's also a brand-new mission pack from the guys who made the acclaimed new levels for the original Quake, and I'm looking forward to giving that a shot. Finally, a proper port of Quake 64, which is apparently quite different from the original.

That's just a staggering amount of quality content, and I'd happily have paid the full price knowing how good it is. Recommended to anyone who enjoys old-school shooters - don't wait for a sale, get it now!

I put off buying this for a while because I'd heard it was a poor man's Papers Please and, yeah, it's very clear where the inspiration came from here. However, the core gameplay of document validation is solid, even if it won't sound like it to newcomers, although it doesn't quite feature the same level of moral dilemma.

Instead of Soviet desperation, the backdrop here is a post-Brexit Britain sliding happily towards becoming a fascist ethnostate; it's quite tongue-in-cheek while also making a point about the direction the real-life island is headed in, which seems to have ruffled more than a few feathers. Your character is a nightclub bouncer rather than a checkpoint border guard, so the stakes don't seem as high, but there are some ongoing threads that keep you involved in the bigger story as a whole.

It's satisfying fun, with some nice retro graphics and some really cracking tunes that the clubs belt out. If you liked Papers Please and aren't outraged by the idea that creeping fascism might be a bad idea, there's plenty to like here, and I've replayed it a few times. The end is a bit ♥♥♥♥♥, unfortunately, but it's not a po-faced polemic so I can overlook a random "...and then everything was suddenly OK" finale.

Would recommend, along with the kooky One Love DLC, and will be buying the sequel at some point.

Hidden object puzzler from 2010 that re-tells The Hound of the Baskervilles as a straightforward supernatural tale. Does pretty much what you'd expect from the genre, so if this is your bag and you're a Holmes fan who won't be outraged at the story being changed this is a decent time waster that you can burn through in a day without too much difficulty.
