I rarely finish games, but I finished Ys Origin twice and almost went for a third do-over.

The game as its core is quite fun. Mash Z at baddies. Baddies come straight at you, pushing you towards progress. Build that experience multiplier with every hit. Room emptied? Quick, rush to the next one, don't let it fade away! Mash, mash, hack and slash! Faster, Yunica, faster!

The part where the game forces you to essentially stop having fun mashing enemies to pieces are decidedly the least fun, and the very first chapter is probably the worst in this regard.

For the rest, however, the game doesn't look upon you for pushing recklessly forward: the game recognizes that there is nothing wrong with W+M1 (or, rather, Z+↑); it embraces the euphoria you get by building up your attack chain and going from monster to monster, building up buffs in the progress, leveling up without a break -- there is none of that "YOU JUST GOT ONE SKILL POINT STOP EVERYTHING YOU ARE DOING AND SPEND IT RIGHT THE HELL NOW" stuff, and the upgrades you CAN buy can wait in between flurries. Hell: the way NPCs in the game described Yunica in their fixed scripts matched perfectly the way I was playing -- accidental Z-mashing-based rolepaying has no right feeling this rewarding.

You spend 10 hours finishing the game, and you feel rewarded and spent and awesome. And then the game says you've unlocked a new character.

This is where I usually tune out; I don't really tend to do NG+s with rare exceptions. Ys Origin however was just so much fun it earned a chance for one, and oh boy. This new character's plot is completely different from Yunica's; it feels like the sequel to the story, or rather, a better version of it; and indeed my understanding is that it's this second version of the story that gets picked up in the next games.

The way he plays, also, is like Yunica squared: for a few boss fights, Yunica could rely on long range attacks to keep safe, but this second character has no ranged options at all. He must get in close and personal and it feels rewarding as hell, even though I've actually been playing on easy throughout -- it's still a game from Japan and I do NOT trust their sense of scale when it comes to difficulty.

I enjoyed Ys Origin a lot and it's almost a pit that the third character's plot doesn't seem different enough to warrant a third replay.

Get it, get the cards and get smashing.

Technical issues plague this game and you should definitely avoid it. Go watch a let's play instead.

* It will always start at native resolution and fullscreen, no matter what settings you use.
* It will detect your language based not on your system language or your Steam language, but on what standard you use for dates and numbers. There is no other way to avoid this game's atrocious translation than to subject yourself to month-date-year dates.
* The translation, as I said, is ATROCIOUS. Well, the Italian one anyway. Very obvious typos like "Per spostartsi" o "Rijocare" can be found within one minute of starting the game, right after the unskippable list of companies who outsourced this game.

This is the closest thing you can get "legitimately" to Need For Speed: Most Wanted. You know, the first one. The one World is based upon. Most Wanted was a great game, although it had a tendency to crash during very long pursuits (~20 minutes). This gets close, although it doesn't have pursuit challenges and those were tons of fun.

Play Most Wanted first. Amazon.com has a few more copies. EA doesn't sell the game anymore, so...

This game will seem impossible to beat at first. However, it's all about the items -and once you get that first win, things go downhill pretty fast in a fun rollercoaster of doom. It's kind of a pain that the best items are locked at start, so go ahead and spoil yourself with the list of actions that unlock stuff. That'll really help you with the initial stretch.

And when you'll have beaten the game twice with all the characters and stuff, the dirt cheap DLC gets you a ton more stuff to do, dialing murder up to 11.

Just make sure you're ready to handle the themes, objects and graphics. If Christian references/blasphemy make you uneasy, skip. If you don't want to kill poor fleeing aborts crying and vomiting flies, skip. Otherwise do give this a try.
