For a long time, gaming was dead to me, and I was really searching for something that was somewhat casual but also offered a challenge. In recent years, the market has unfortunately been flooded with catastrophic Triple-A titles, and while a few good games did come out, nothing really convinced me.

In my opinion, this game has completely turned things around, and I can recommend it to everyone. It’s not a Soulslike, but it feels like one, without all the sadistic aspects typical of series like Dark Souls or Elden Ring. Unfortunately, none of those titles were fun for me, and they couldn’t keep me engaged, but this one was different.

The combat system is extremely refreshing and very diverse thanks to the skill tree. Of course, there are several optimal skills and abilities here as well, but you can still play however you want and have an extreme number of options that you first have to get used to! Most of the bosses were superbly designed, extremely fun, and some were genuinely challenging, while others were easy to defeat on the first try. And a note here, because some YouTubers unfortunately didn’t understand this (greetings to Maxim, a German YouTuber): There are multiple ways to parry attacks. You just need to spend some time with the skill tree.

World-building and exploration is emphasized here, and if you don’t explore well or inform yourself beforehand, you’ll miss out on a lot. NG+ offers the opportunity to theoretically play through the game three more times to unlock something specific. Yes, it is very linear unlike other titles like Elden Ring, however, there is still a lot you can miss.

The story takes some getting used to and can be confusing if you’re not interested in Chinese mythology or familiar with the story of Sun Wukong, so I recommend looking into it. There are already good YouTube videos about it. Cutscenes are absolutely stunning, voice acting is great and the music is beautiful.

The graphics are phenomenal, with barely any bugs, glitches, crashes, or errors, although I did read in some negative reviews that some people had issues, but I rarely encountered any. The game did crash on me 1-2 times right at the start, but we have to keep in mind that this is almost an indie game when you consider that it’s the first real game from GameScience.

However, I did find a few bosses in the game frustrating, which, in my opinion, were not well designed. The main one that comes to mind is the dragon on the frozen lake in Chapter 3, who is basically nearly impossible to hit (at least with my build at the time, maybe a different stance would work better...) and constantly runs away. Also, in Chapter 3, the grasshopper broke me; its design was absolutely terrible in my opinion. Endless combos, barely staggerable—not even with the parry mechanic of the Smash stance (kudos to the fan here)—and the counterattack window was far too short. Very unfun. The final boss of Chapter 3 also annoyed me, as it likes to hit you into unavoidable cutscenes and deal damage.

Aside from a few spots, I had the best time in a long while with this game, and I’m already looking forward to NG+ and the announced DLC.
