I’m no poker aficionado. My knowledge of the game is mostly gleaned from casual observations and snippets from TV shows. I couldn't identify a Royal Flush if my life depended on it (I've got the achievement for discarding/ruining a royal flush in-hand...), but I know it's something you want. Balatro, despite its poker facade, isn't really poker. It's the first game that’s made me understand and love the core mechanics of poker, and it's easily one of the most engrossing titles of the year.

Calling Balatro a poker game is simply inaccurate. There are no opponents to play against. Instead, it's a poker-inspired roguelike deckbuilder. The real poker aspect lies in learning to assemble hands like a Flush, Straight, or Full House. A handy glossary illustrates these hands and their scores, which helped me, a poker novice, finally memorize and enjoy the game.

Balatro’s design makes it incredibly addictive. The fast-paced, snappy gameplay allows for quick sessions, yet it’s deep enough to occupy entire afternoons. Even when the game doesn’t go your way, you’re compelled to try again. The music, though limited to a single track, is highly engaging and adds to the game’s hypnotic appeal.

Balatro is a must-play. Dive in and experience it for yourself. I could easily write another thousand words or more, but I think you should enjoy discovering it on your own. Explore the 150 unique jokers and the myriad of other cards that make this game a true gem. Priced at $15, Balatro offers immense value. Get it, get it, get it.

Oh also - I could listen to the main audio track for hours and hours. It's delightful.
