Great story-driven game that starts off slow, like most games, but jumps straight into the excitement at some time around day 64 (dont worry, you dont have to play through 64 virtual days. It's a linear story that will skip days throughout the summer you're spending in your Firewatch tower.) What I think really makes this games stand out to me is the hyper-realistic (I know thats a term for paintings, but you get what I mean.) interaction between characters. The character's dialogues were scripted perfectly and executed perfectly as well. I hope the voice actors that played the two main characers, Henry and Delilah, have a big future in the business. Back to the dialogue, the conversations between Henry and Delilah seemed like real, down to earth conversations that anyone would have with someone they've never met and are spending a period of time with. The two characters start to grow chemistry as the story moves along and become more and more comfortable with eachother. So to sum up what I'm saying, The characters just feel human. The conversations you have with Delilah seem so real you start to care for both characters and really hope that they achieve what they are trying to do. But my favorite part about this game was how it left you with so many questions after almost anybody said anything. There have been questions flowing through my mind since I finished the game, and I think that only time, and super fans who explore the lore and secrets of the game, will answer my questions.
Now I don't have the best PC so I had to turn down the graphics a lot (and by a lot, I mean everything on the lowest settings). But even then the art style of the whole game was amazing. It was a prettied up TF2 with a more polygonal look, and it worked, really well. The one problem I had with the video apsects of the game is the Motion Blur being on by default. As soon as I started I turned that off real quick because I was already feeling nauseous. Game devs stop putting motion blur in your games. The human eye hardly notices motion blur in real life.
This game does give you some travelling to do every now and then but its not too bad. The map is pretty small, which it should be because its a linear story, but even when you need to travel there is always something to find on your way there to report to Delilah about and hear their interesting conversations. The game was very exciting throughout until the ending. Now we all know the ending of a game can make or break it but I think they just played it cool. The whole game you're being thrown all these plot twists and turns and then the end just didn't bring that *BANG* every one was expecting. It wasn't a bad ending what so ever, it just wasn't at the same level of excitment that the rest of the game was at.
I feel like this game, if the devs allow it, can be WAY more worth it if they add a Workshop section for it. Custom stories, mods, skins, all mae by the community and fans themselves. If this is added that would make it the true selling point, because a 3 hour game is not worth anything over $5, but if there are thousands of custom stories to play by hundreds of different fans then the playability is almost limitless because every story will be different in its own unique way. But for now, not worth $20.
Regardless, the game delivered where it mattered most (the story) and did what it wanted to do, make a game where the story excites its audience, and make that game very pretty. Would I recommend this game? Yes, but not for the $20 price tag. As you can see, I beat the game in less than 4 hours and for that low of a play time, a $20 price tag is defintely not worth it. Espacially a linear story that ends with the only one outcome, maybe 2, (I looked up on a steam forum and never got a clear answer but correct me if I'm wrong) but most people aren't going to play through a second time to see. They can just look up on Youtube in 5 minutes instead of playing through the game again. So get the game when it goes on sale during summer sales in a couple of months, or watch someone interesting stream it. Either way I think you should experience this game because it gives you a real look at lonliness, abandonment, relationships, and just life as an adult. I could keep going on and on and on about this game but I won't even though most people have stopped reading by now.
