TL:DR :
- If you've never played: it's good, very even, but it won't hold your hand to the point where you'll likely want to quit. Get help from the community and the wiki and try to find yourself a mentor to play, and be prepared to take your journey in your own hands.
- If you've already played: with the change in direction and 2 years of latest update, things are in a good spot to return. There are still some problems spotted everywhere, but it's more than fine now.

Update as of 12/2024
After 2 years of update, things have changed quite a lot. I'm now confident to recommend the game. Quality of Life is one of their priority and has been for 2 years with vital things such as new player experience, and roadblocks removal. With the direction taken, it's fair to say things will continue to get better.

Update as of 08/2023
Confirmation of the last update, the updates show the game is going in a better direction. The early game is now far better for new players, with the duviri paradox. There are more balance and fix updates. Most of the original reasons of why I don't recommend playing the game are for the most part still valid though...

Things are still the same, but with changes in the dev team, the game will (I hope) go in a better direction.

Don't play it please, just don't encourage the devs in their goal of making the game worse with every update they release

'Been playing for the better part of 7 years at least, with the last 3 being more off than on.

The devs don't play their own game. They complain about a meta being in place, then do everything in their power to make sure that meta is the only thing that's playable.
They add new content that's either stupidly convoluted for no reason, or grindy as hell without much reward.
They don't fix old and broken/irrelevant content (infested salvage, defection, so many bugs in eidolon, a missing boss in orb vallis, etc...)
They don't listen to the community concerning upcoming major changes

If you're looking at reviews dating 2 years or more, consider the game has changed for the worst, is even harder and obtuse for beginners than before (especially the eximus change)

Excellent. That content, with that quality, for such a low price puts Hollow Knight at a 10/10 without question.

The game looks beautiful, graphically and musicaly, the lore is deep and full of twist, and most important, the gameplay is snappy, responsive and engaged.

Beware tho, as this is an insect filled game, and if you have any fear of them, you should walk away from this game. I'll only say the drawing and the design used for the characters does lower the discomfort you can feel from certain insect species.

Such an Incredible game...
Combines beautiful, vivid and reactive graphism, a really tight gameplay, both hard and rewarding,a touching story, music to make your ears orgasm, and my favorite character.

Points that stop it from earning the "best game of all time" would be its characters. If Kuro has a real personna, the rest of them are a bit too...one sided. Also, it has almost no replayability.
