As a person who was tremendously impressed by the first game, which resulted turning myself and my friends into loyal followers and supporters of the series, I am profoundly heartbroken to announce that this game was an utter disappointment. This review will heavily rely on a comparison of Mile 0 to Road 96 and my personal observations combined with my commentary.
The first game had a bunch of unique characters, which encouraged the player into playing the game more intensively to learn more about their life stories and their purposes. Although Mile 0 accomplished to point out some of the key elements and details that were only implied (not directly shown) in the first game, it has not made a significant contribution to the storyline.
Mile 0 lacks in-game interactions such as unlocking skills and collecting money, along with a variety of interactions. This was an expectation because those interactions played a huge role for the concept of the game, making it less appealing to the player.
Musical rides were simply terrible. While soundtracks were fascinating (as always), musical rides comprised the majority of the gameplay time. There were an unnecessary amount of them and were basically the same with different themes. Mini-games that required use of logic while challenging the player should have been preferred, according to my perspective.
The success of the first game set sky-high expectations for players. However, Mile 0 was not even close to surpassing the first game due to its limited in-game features, mediocre critical thinking phases, and lack of character interactions. I am still a huge fan of the series and will await for upcoming games. However, Mile 0 should be a turning point for the developers and a call to return the roots.
