Definitely a good buy, a rhythm-based game where so many actions feel satisfying. The sound design and music go together so well, alongside the gameplay. Despite being fairly simple in terms of controls and concept, this game gets insanely tough with some of the game modes. Probably doesn't have hundreds of hours of gameplay in it, but I've certainly spent a while learning and trying to master it, and it's a game I often come back to.

Let me be clear; this game is by no means flawless. However, I still think it can be incredibly fun and despite the flaws, and as such both my friends and I continuously return to the game.
Since this’ll be a long review, and some people might not have the time (or the will) to read my rambling, I’ll list off my pros and cons first, TL:DR style:

    Pros:
  • Rewarding level up system, without being overpowered
  • Great customisation (especially executes, some with dark humour and some gloriously gory ones)
  • Surprisingly not yet abandoned by Ubisoft; game is updated fairly frequently
  • Enjoyable gameplay (In my opinion, more inspired than Street Fighter or Tekken, which I feel grow dull and repetitive quickly)
  • It's a lot of fun! Seriously!

    Cons:

  • Can be incredibly inconsistent mechanically (Partially due to peer-to-peer system, which is being replaced)
  • Game balance hasn't been solved, with Assassins generally ruling supreme
  • Can be buggy
  • Lag/Disconnects (Mostly sorted at this stage by dedicated servers)
  • Some characters have hard to counter and easily abusable mechanics (really an extension from point 2, but my anger at this decided it was worth an extra point, go figure)

Here's a few details on this, starting with my biggest gripes against the game.

My biggest issue with the game isn't the unreliable connection (which, by the way, should be fixed soon with the implementation of dedicated servers) or a lot of the other complaints. It’s the balance. As someone who’s played for nigh on 600 hours, I can safely say that some characters are entirely better than others, and just plain unfair to fight. The most concerning thing about this is perhaps the disconnect between the community and the developers about this - One character who is notoriously weak (lawbringer) was possibly denied a rework, with one of the mods effectively saying people just needed to 'git gud', though hopefully this was just the opinion of the one mod in question, rather than the overall view of the developer team.

[Paragraph removed due to new massive update - will rewrite when the impact of the Marching Fire Expansion has settled down]

But as I said at the start of the review, this game is also a blast to play at times. When you do catch that overpowered character by predicting them, or when you pull off a miraculous 4v1 to save the game, the feeling is incredibly good. Moreover, the different gear you obtain gets more and more interesting looking as you play a character, and get better; there are many customisation options, and the fact that different gear has different stats allows you to fine tune a character to your playstyle (you can upgrade attack at the cost of defence, or stamina regen at the cost of stamina costs). Many of the emotes executes and effects look amazing, and for me, there is the right balance of gritty medieval combat and slight humour with many of these.

I do not regret buying this game at full price at all, though for some it is certainly not worth this price. I simply recommend it as an enthusiast of medieval stuff. Even though I listed more cons than pros, I feel that the pros are great enough to outweigh the negative aspects of the game, especially the fact that it can be so, so much fun. Have I said that enough yet?

    Wew, that was long.

I believe it's time to add my voice (albeit rather late) to the chorus singing this games praises.
Prior to this, I had played Civ 3, and while I enjoyed it, there were a few things that bugged me, such as unit stacking. When I purchased Civ 5, I was expecting these annoyances to be removed, and a graphical improvement, but little more. Fair to say, when I played it for the first time I was blown away by the advancement.

Now, every Civilization has a distinct playstyle, the new tiling makes the game far more interesting with unit movement and made the late game less boring. Moreover, the game looks beautiful - perhaps it's not the most high definition see-every-blade-of-grass game, but the colours and effects use make it enjoyable to look at while keeping the FPS high.

If I had one criticism, it would be that although the late game is better, it's still rather dull, and that the renaissance, an interesting and beautiful patch of history, is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ short. However both of these are easily fixed by the very active modding community.

I love this game, and realise that in this review there are so many positives I didn't put because I'm a lazy bastard However, I'm sure you can find these out for yourself. Looking forward to seeing this legacy carried through to Civ 6.

As a lover of the other Mount & Blade games, I came in with fairly high expectations and a want to love this game. And I really tried to, but after just 3 hours I realised something.

This game is just nowhere near as fun as Warband, or even the original M&B.

Perhaps this is unfair, due to my love of a medival environment, and I can't quite put my finger on what I dislike so much; perhaps it's the less interesting units or the changes to certain gameplay aspects such as mercenaries which overall just made the game far less fun for me.

All in all, for other lovers of the M&B franchise, I'm afraid I cannot recommend buying this. It's far from being a bad game, but I simply didn't enjoy it. Perhaps worth a buy if on a decent sale.

With the surprising lack of hype for bannerlord, I thought I aught to review this, given that when bannerlord comes out there will probably be some kind of sale on this.

Warband doesn't change too much from the original mount & blade: same factions (with one added) similar map, ect.. However, these seemingly minor changes completely change the game experience, making it far more varied and interesting. While there are some factions that have an easier time than others (swadians always seem to get wiped out quickly due to their positioning, unless the player allies with them), you can certainly win as any faction, and each has a unique fighting style with different strengths and weaknesses. The somewhat unique combination of strategy, RPG and FPS/3PS lets you play the game how YOU want; be it as a trader, benevolent or evil lord, or even King/Queen of your own nation.

As one final note, there are plenty of amazing mods for this game, from minor graphical improvements to complete gameplay overhauls. For any lover of medival games, this is a must have.

Early Access Review
Since I earlier wrote this review, a few of the problems I thought had been tackled. I'm also impressed by the activity of the developers.

I do recomend this game, however, there are a few things to note.

It is still very much in development, however, the developers update frequently and add plenty of new things, to the extent to which if you stop playing for a while, there's so much more added that you almost have to relearn the game! Depending on how you like your games, this may be a selling point or a caution.

One major critisism was the push towards clan gameplay - The game was ruled by clans during some updates. If clan gaming is your thing, this game is great, however, for solo players like me being put up against a clan of 5 or 6 is almost impossible, and the recent updates have made this even worse. Not to mention every single clan is a bunch of absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. However, the newer changes have seemed to deal with a few of these problems. Clans will of course always be the most powerful and unpleasant, but it feels far more playable now.

Recently, the gunplay has been hugely improved, which is a big plus. With the huge update with the exp system, the game has somewhat taken a huge step in balancing (although resulting in the unfortunate side effect of helping clans). It's a lot of fun to pick up and play for a while.

One last gripe from potato players like me; optimisation is not great right now, however the developers are working hard to fix this.

All in all, I love this game, and it's constantly improving. (I'm sorry legacy fans, I find that version awful) I trust the developers and believe this game will be a worthwhile buy, and the money I put into it was well worth the entertainment; although you may wish to wait for a sale. On sale, BUY IT.

Undertale is a great game, nice soundtrack, interesting characters and plot and interesting addition of Bullet-Hell elements into a retro-style rpg. It's nice to see a game (especially an rpg) break away from the "everything you encounter must die" thing. I love this game, love the different endings and the tight controls. It's certainly in my top 10.

However, what I don't like is how much people fanboy/girl over it. I genuinely think this is one of the most overated games of all time, from all the hero worship it gets. Overated doesn't mean it's bad, far from it. It's an amazing game that people got overcommited to.

All that said, well done Toby, and thanks for such a refreshing game.

Now, I haven't played this in a while, and not for too long, but I just have a few things to say.

First of all, I played the old version of this game, and was not half bad at it, I hope. I loved the simplicity, and everything seemed pretty balanced. The digging and building aspect was extremely useful. In fear of getting gunned down by a SMG wielding maniac? Build a small fortification. Got a short ranged weapon? Tunnel behind them. Want to protect your base? Build some fortifications to slow the enemy down. Lots of good stuff that kept everyone guessing and generally having a good time.

Then jetpacks happened.

So now, building defences is practically usless when some guy can just use a class with a in-built fly hack. As much as I love some of the new features, and gamemodes like classic CTF, which brings back all that was good about the original, and more, this game just lacks the smoothness of generic shooters and the quirkyness of lesser known titles such as the old voxel shooter this game emerged from. It makes me feel like it has no idea what it wants to be.

TL;DR: I'm afraid I can't reccomend this product at full price, seeing as the old version still exists under a different name and still has a fairly active community. However, I wouldn't totally rule it out if it's on sale and you have a few spare bucks. It can be fun, but it's got quite a few problems.

I hope this review is helpful to any looking at buying this title.
