Extremely unclear consequences for standard 4x gameplay:

As someone who is a fan of stellaris; another paradox property, I was excited by the idea of playing a civ-like game from these creators, however, I find myself unable to enjoy the experience.

Some great concepts that are poorly executed. Balance for random events needs to be adjusted or adjustable. Improvement building is unclear and lacks good intuitive design on providing easy to access improvement suggestions. The implementation of product generation in cities is a fun idea, but is easy to lose track of the improvement chain. With upgrades to adapt those resources being included in specific era technologies, the player is forced to skip these in order to deal with aggressive AI and punishing random events, which in turn, makes it easy to miss out on integral parts of the game. Certain events are locked behind being the first player to access certain eras, knowledge (a science stand in) therefore, becomes too important to avoid. All of which causes a railroading effect that functionally locks out fun/interesting parts of the game.

With over 4000+ hours on 4x games I can say with certainty that in its current form, this game is not worth the time or money to invest in.

This is a review many years after it's initial release with over 1,000 hours on the game. I recently started out the Civ franchise at 5 and I can only say that this version has been great. There's a lot of depth to the original game and with the updates, even if you haven't bought all the expansions there's always more that's being added in. I would personally recommend the expansions as well as they add a great deal of depth, interesting rule sets and game modes to keep the game fresh and exciting. That being said, I recommend buying the base game first to make sure the game is for you before you start investing your whole wallet into it. The developers have done a great job keeping in touch with the community, re-balancing the game and adding in requested features from the play base.
