None of this would have happened if you'd just stopped. But on you marched...and for what?

This will come at a price, Caulfield. I hope you are prepared to pay it.

This is the best generic war game I've played. It felt so satisfying to put a bullet in the antagonist's head at the end. Can you believe all the evil things he did? He deserved to die. I felt so much like a hero afterwards - and you totally will, too! This is one of the best generic war games I've ever played - even if it was another generic Call of Duty-esque terrorist shooter.

The missions were very fun but very generic.

The guns were very generic.

The characters were very generic.

And most of all: the story was one of the most generic I've seen in a game. They should get all kinds of awards for being that generic.

I highly recommend this generic game. I love it, but some people don't.

Because it's generic.

Just another run-of-the-mill generic shooter. With generic terrorist enemies.

When you play this game, make sure you remember that this is just another generic military shooter.

You'll thank me later.

Just in case anyone doesn't realize - yes, this review is total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and it's on purpose. I'm helping to sell the Spec Ops The Line's disguise as a generic military shooter, because getting punched in the mouth by this game's story is part of the one-of-a-kind experience.

This game's story is actually pretty difficult.

So you load the game and have a jolly old time playing the first six chapters or so. The game is your best friend. This game is really good, you say, as you get to know the characters and get attached to them. You learn the mechanics, and you're certain you've bought a great game.

Then in Chapter 7, the game betrays you. It slaps you in the face and kicks you in the stomach, forcing you to fall on your ass.

The game starts to kick you. It kicks the ♥♥♥♥ out of you. You beg it to get back up. Each beg makes the kicking harder.

"Let me get back up!" you scream in a desperate attempt to stop the pain.

"EARN IT, NERD!" The game replies, as it mercilessly continues to pound your ribcage and torso with its unforgiving boot.

It goes on. The pain is unbearable. With nothing else to do, you scream for the pain to stop.

The game doesn't say anything, it just laughs at your misery. It likes this. It likes to see you a broken, bloody mess on the floor.

But you don't give up.

Motivated by the best story and the best characters that have ever graced a video game, you don't give up.

You brace yourself for the pain of each impact.

You've been kicked so hard for so long, you start to go numb. But around this time, is when you learn.

You learn the kicks. You learn where they come, you learn how they come. You've gone numb to them, so now they can't hurt you as much.

The kicks keep coming. But this time, you take it. You take the pain and you tough it out, because that's what this sadist seems to want. You're used to what it has to dish out.

You try again, saying "Can I get back up now?" in a raspy, injured voice.

It backfires. The game is personally insulted. It starts to kick you harder. It puts all its energy into each hit, hitting new, and bruised areas. Soon it starts to stomp on you instead. It's reconsidering whether it even wants to let you get back up.

Maybe you should just give up. But no. You've gone too far to do that now.

The characters flash in your mind. You remember why you're laying here, being beaten in the first place.

You keep taking the kicks, and now the stomps. You've learned the hard way from the kicks, the stomps aren't as bad of a challenge now.

You're used to it. Used to having the living ♥♥♥♥ beaten out of you. You're used to the numbness. The numbness is now your strength.

"GET UP, SCUMBAG!" The game taunts you. You make the mistake of taking it, and you try to get up.

It puts a boot right into your nose, sending blood spilling down your mouth. You're back on the ground now, dazed from the impact.

The game laughs at you. It's taken pleasure in what it just did.

You know that you can crawl away, but you don't. You don't because of the story. It all started because of the story, and the characters. You're far too attached to back out now.

You ignore the game's laughter. You start to notice that you're getting stronger. The laughter doesn't matter.

"EARN IT, YOU ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SCUMBAG!"

Enough.

You're done. You've been taught everything you need to know.

Aching from the pain, you slowly begin to stand. Slowly this time, soon you're on one knee.

The kicks start to stop. The game knows what you're doing.

But now, the game punches back, a harder than ever this time. You refuse to let this one hit its mark. You swipe his fist out of the air, inbound to your cheek, and shove it away.

Blood still coming out of your nose, bruises covering your body, you start to rise.

You get up.

On two feet, staring the game dead in the eyes, you speak three words.

"I got up."

The game smirks, and for a moment, you think it's going to start beating you again. But it's not.

The game steps forward and stands next to you.

"You earned it."

It offers its hand. You take it, and smirk as you give the game a handshake.

You won. You completed Valkyria Chronicles.

Rather, you conquered Valkyria Chronicles.

Returning to seriousness, some of the game's missions really like to put the player in an awful spot then say "Good luck, nerd." The difficulty spike in Chapter 7 is higher than any other game I have ever seen, and for every mission beyond that, the Empire always has better gear and more numbers than you. But, the only thing keeping you from putting the game down for being so hard and unfair, is the characters and the story. It's just too good.

Great game, proceed at your own risk. But, the handshake you receive at the end of the game is one of the most satisfying things you will ever experience.

TL:DR The game is hated for its multiplayer, sly marketing techniques, and most of all, bad timing, being released after two other science-fiction Call of Duty games. If you're a multiplayer gamer, then skip this and play Planetside 2. But if you're a singleplayer gamer, or a fan of Call of Duty, I highly recommend this one. It's singleplayer is amazing and the game has become my favorite Call of Duty game to date. Also, I find the Jackal missions to be a blast.

Why does the internet hate this game so much? There are actually a few different reasons:

1. The main reason why this game got so much hate when the first trailer came out is because it was the third year in a row of science-fiction Call of Duty games. After Advanced Warfare, (2014,) and Black Ops III, (2015,) the fans of Call of Duty were aching for a return to the boots-on-the-ground style of warfare in either the modern era or in World War II, and with Infinity Ward's turn to release a Call of Duty game rolling around, most expected them to release Modern Warfare 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts 2, or some other form of modern or World War II war. Instead, we got slapped by Infinite Warfare, which not only continued the streak of science-fiction Call of Duty games, but took it a step further by taking things to space for the first time in the franchise. Hardcore fans from the Modern Warfare time didn't see this as a true Call of Duty game anymore, and the fans asking for a new Modern Warfare or a return to World War II felt like they were just given the finger. This is the main reason why the public outcry was so bad.

2. Activition bundled Infinite Warfare with Call of Duty 4 Remastered as a cheap marketing technique, forcing players to buy this if they wanted the remaster of the first Modern Warfare. While it was Activition's decision and therefore their fault, Infinite Warfare itself picked up a good chunk of the hate from this.

3. In recent years, most gamers have seemed to gravitate towards multiplayer games, such as Battlefield or Titanfall, which currently hold the titles as the giants of the FPS genre. With Battlefield's open combat plus drivable vehicles, and Titanfall providing parkour verticality in their gameplay as well as the ability to pilot Titans, Call of Duty stuck with its tried-and-true multiplayer formula of parking-lot-sized maps with a lot of corridor shooting, which let's face it, gets blown out of the water by the much bigger scales of combat put forth by the giants. People may have liked this type of multiplayer in the Modern Warfare era, but by the time Call of Duty: Ghosts rolled around in 2013, most multiplayer fans had already migrated to Battlefield 3 or Battlefield 4. This has resulted in an exponential trend of hate for the Call of Duty franchise, since it can't stand up to the giants in their multiplayer aspects, despite having good singleplayer. This is why the entire Call of Duty franchise is hated these days, actually. They just hate the multiplayer and don't care about the singleplayer campaigns.

However, if you focus on singleplayer, this is actually an excellent game. It's got good characters, a fine story, and most of all, a memorable universe. There are also a few new features that singleplayer gamers will enjoy. Mainly, sidemissions. There are now optional story missions that can be skipped, but feel like full missions and provide perks and upgrades as an incentive to do them. Doing all of them will give the player multiplayer-style upgrades like Sleight of Hand and Quickdraw, increasing their power and allowing them to chew through enemies that much faster. There is also a loadout system in singleplayer where you can choose what weapons you take into battle, with a total of three slots, plus a recommended slot that can be configured for one mission. On top of that, Jackal missions (where you fly a fighter in space combat,) are a blast in my opinion, although I can understand if people don't like them.

Overall, if you're a singleplayer gamer, or a Call of Duty fan, or a fan of science-fiction, or all of the above, then I highly recommend this one. Going off of the singleplayer, this is an excellent game that I've played through twice and enjoyed both times. You'll like it. And if you think the price is too high right now, wait a few months or maybe a year or two, and it'll go down.

Imagine that Just Cause 3 and Far Cry 3 had a child.

That's this game.

Only played four hours, but I expect I'll be investing more.

This is a great total conversion mod and I do like the game and enjoy it despite all its problems, but let's face the facts here. It's a good total conversion mod, but it's a total conversion mod for Civ V at best, and not a perfect one at that.

I'm still recommending it for fans of the Civilization games. They'll enjoy the science-fiction spin on the series, once they get the hang of this game, and if they can ignore/work around some or most of the game's problems.

I'd write a review, but it's not like anyone will hear what I have to say over the massive amounts of explosions.
