I've been playing the orignal Dawn of War games since their release back in 2004. I still have the retail disc copies of the original Dawn of War and all its expansions.

I also enjoyed the original Company of Heroes and its expansions, again I still have the boxed disc copies, and I've spent over 3000 hours on the Dawn of War 2 on steam.

What has this got to do with Dawn of War 3?

The single player campaign was actually ok, good infact. Not the best single player ever, but not terrible either. Ok. The multiplayer though...

Well, Dawn of War 3 is nothing like any of its predecessors. I was expecting squad level strategy, with intelligent cover placement for units to use, and a little bit of base building brought back in.

What I found was a multiplayer game with no defence turrets, no suppression units, throw-away units that take too long to get around the map, and insta-death if the enemy is able to use cheese tactics to target your power cores.

I wasn't very good at the multiplayer in this particular game if I'm honest, but despite that I still managed to win quite a few games despite playing badly. I kept a single Scout squad, teched up, put 3 dreadnoughts into drop-pods, and going straight for the turrets and power core. So in essence, I played badly, knew I was playing badly, and STILL could pull off a win without too much fuss. That isn't fun for anyone.

I think that is the crux of it, the multiplayer simply isn't...fun. The suspense I would get in the multiplayer of Dawn of War 2 as two sides fight over keeping that third victory point out of the other team's hands is gone with this game. Also, you can't really make much use of the terrain to put your units in cover, it's just bland. You build throw way units and watch them get annihilated, or use cheese tactics to win. Like other's have commented, the developers really should have just done Dawn of War 2 with updated graphics.

As I said earlier, the campaign was ok, and if this is on sale for 75% off or something I wouldn't blame you for getting it for the single player. But if you want multiplayer fun get Dawn of War 2, that game is nearly 9 year's old and it has more players in the multiplayer than this.
