The album "Kỷ niệm ngày mất," by Vothana, is a work that has been heard by few, but sought after by many. It's a demo steeped in esoterics and patriotism. But I am not one to be swayed by sentimentality.
The track "Đưa Lên Cờ," in particular, is one that has garnered much speculation. Yet, I found it to be decidedly mid. Yes, mid. It meanders along aimlessly, a bloated behemoth of a song that seems to be under the mistaken impression that length equates to depth. It is a musical equivalent of a high school student trying to reach a word count on an essay, padding it out with needless repetition and fluff.
Kenny Vu, bless his heart, is no Grausamkeit. He lacks the subtlety, the nuance, the raw, emotional power that Andreas Bettinger brings to his music. There is an artistic integrity to BSOD's work, a sense that every strum, every word, every beat of the drum is painstakingly sculpted and imbued with meaning. I simply do not see that same level of care and attention in Kenny's Demo VI.
