Another excellent if somewhat short game from supergiant. If you played Bastion then the art style and storytelling will be very familiar to you.

As far as the art goes its extremely well done in my opinion, the color palette is bright and vivid while the art style itself reminds me a lot of bastion in that its 2D and hand drawn. This is not to say that they look like the same game however, Transistor's art style is very strikingly different, being much more futuristic with its environments and enemies.

The combat is very fun and has nice turn based aspects to it, and there are tons of combinations with the upgrade system. Functions are your abilities, and these functions can do one of three things: be used as an active ability, augment another ability, or be a passive ability. These are all interchangeable at the various access points placed around each level and combinations are vastly different, such that for example Crash()+Breach() is not the same as Breach()+Crash().

The music is from the same guy that did the music in bastion and the vocalist is the same as well, so as you might expect it's excellent throughout.

The only real problem I have with the game, albeit a small one, is that its a bit short, clocking in at about 5-6 hours per playthrough depending on how many of the challenges you do. It does offer a bit of replayability in the recursive mode once you finish the story, however.

Overall though I can't really recommend this game enough to people that liked bastion, and if you haven't played bastion, Transistor is still a fun game with interesting combat, story, and artwork, so it's well worth the $20 in my opinion.

Also if you haven't played bastion, go do that.

If you liked the original this is pretty much more of the same, and as such I quite enjoy it.

Pros:

Respec: Probably my favorite feature added to DS2. Allows you to reset your SL at any time and reallocate your levels so you can change builds whenever you want. Gone are the days of using cheat engine and having a ton of save files.

More Content: There are a TON more bosses and things to do in general in DS2. Sporting 31 bosses for PvE plus two PvE focust covenants and several PvP covenants, there always seems to be something to do. Dueling arenas are back and curiously in two seperate covenants.

Harder: Even in the base game (as in before New Game +) I feel the difficulty is somewhat higher than the original was. The bonfire ascetic mechanic helps if you want to jack up the difficulty of a particular area or respawn a boss without having to beat the entire game again. Also for those of you who are particularly masochistic you can join the company of champions covenant for a similar effect.

More dark souls: In my opinion, the formula for the game itself remains largely unchanged from dark souls 1, which I think is a good thing. Why fix what isn't broken?

It's actually dark: And not in an edgy kind of way. There are some areas where using the new torch mechanic makes it much more tolerable going through a zone, but unlike dark souls 1 there is more than one zone (tomb of the giants) where you can make use of this feature. You can also use the various torch sconces laying about to mark where you've been so you don't get turned around.

Cons:

Soul Memory: This replaces Soul Level determining online matchmaking. The idea is as you play and collect souls, you will be matched with people who have collected a similar number of souls. Where this falls flat is when you die and lose all your souls, then die again before picking up those souls again, you can't use them to level up BUT they still count towards your "Soul Memory". The other side effect of this is that there is absolutely no reason to ever stop leveling up because of this. When you hit 15 million soul memory it essentially cuts off, meaning once you cross the 15m threshold you can be paired with anyone that is over 15m Soul Memory, regardless of what level those players are (a level 1 player with 999m can be paired with a level 350 player with 15m.

Balance: Mostly because of my previous point, some builds are extremely powerful due to you not having to choose what kind of build you should use. Commonly abused things are, in order of annoyance: Santier's Spear, Monastery Scimitar, Havel's Armor set, Avelyn, Bat Staff, Dark Fog, to name a few.

GUARD BREAK: Shields are now completely useless against a melee build. Press up+r1 and enjoy your free criticals.

In the end though, despite all the problems I can't say that the game isn't enjoyable. Hopefully FROM does something about soul memory and a couple wonky hitboxes at some point, as that will turn a lot of fans away.

This game had so much potential. Don't play SMITE either, made by the same people, so the same thing will probably happen to it.
