Purely for mindless time-wasting. Take nothing seriously or you will be disappointed. Still, something I like to play if I'm watching videos or listening to a lecture or audiobook. The combat can be satisfying enough, it's exactly like Fallout 4 with a few more options available.

Oh, expect a lot of bugs too. Make no mistake, this game isn't well designed.

I like it. I wouldn't view this game as a hardcore competitive shooter, it's something like Evolve but with both teams playing as hunters (with a bit of Gigantic sprinkled in). You have serious decisions to make about how to split your team to keep the XP rolling in vs. capping objectives and teamfighting. There are genuine things to criticize here:

-no team communication, this has to be fixed if you ever want to play with randoms. Playing with a team over VOIP negates this but that shouldn't be required baseline. Easily the single largest issue with the game at the moment from a mechanical standpoint. When playing with a full team on comms it's nearly impossible to lose given the current situation.

-character balance is spotty at best. It's very clear that there are some characters with bad numbers, and some characters with a very confused kit beyond just numbers. This is something I would expect fully from a game that is so new, so I'm surprised they haven't pasted BETA over everything (this seems like a real mistake from either the dev team or the publisher).

-performance optimization. I run this game at around 85-95 FPS on minimum settings, which is far lower than any other game in my library. It's got real problems in this department.

Those are the big 3 that I think can kill this game for new players. Relatively minor issues include a limited character pool beyond balancing issues (only 10 at the moment), poorly balanced talent selection (there are very clear winners in many cases), and a single map on launch. Not to say these things aren't problems, they just seem pretty normal for a newly released game.

With all of that said, I had a good time during my first few hours with the game. There is a lot of downtime between abilities since average cooldowns look to be around 10 seconds, which may be irritating to some but I find to be a good way to focus primarily on shooting mechanics. Weapons have projectile velocities and beyond extremely close range parallax hasn't been a problem (things can definitely break down in melee). There are characters that fill specific roles but these don't seem too restrictive - tanks like Rahi and Earl have potentially quite high damage output at the cost of range and large hitboxes. Most characters move relatively slowly and have some form of movement ability, though a handful of characters could use improvements here - Earl can engage from staggering distances with his while somebody like Shakirri or Ajonah suffer from slow or clunky repositioning (Shakirri just gets more movespeed with a sword out, for example).

The primary game mode is Heart of the Hives as best as I can tell, and the game seems to function best here. You have hives that spawn randomly (or possibly in sequence, not sure) around the map that can be destroyed to pick up an objective, with the first team to 3 winning. It is vital to keep your level, which is shared among teammates, at least as high as your opponent, and ideally higher. Large boosts in character abilities can happen during leveling, meaning you may want to focus on grabbing some XP before trying to contest a hive. Getting picks is obviously also important, since players can choose to spawn around the edges of the map given they are not too close to hives, and can keep teams separated or on staggered respawns. There are creeps that can be killed for XP around the map, as well as 5 capture points that are static and give a slow XP trickle based on number held. It's important to balance farming, capping, teamfighting, and going for hives during the match, making teamwork absolutely vital.

TL:DR - get a group, get on comms, figure out the role you like playing (and which characters actually fill this role) and you will likely do well and have a good time, doubly so if you liked playing hunters in Evolve. I really think a lot of people have had terrible experiences due to the lack of communication, and that's completely valid. I'd also suggest giving Mendoza, Earl, and Tosca a shot as character selections based on ease of use and power while learning what the hell is going on.

Map generation system is great, weapons and skills feel great, story is pretty decent and the art is fantastic. Overall, very good.

Also, tons of room for additional content and an easy system for adding it. I'm excited to see what comes out later on.

Complete garbage. If you don't have people to play with regularly weaves feel really stupid, since there is no incentive to help others out at low level weaves, and there is no reason to complete ANY weave more than once. No idea why this was brought to the live version. Separate progression, possible seasonal grind resets.

Don't want to play weaves?

5 new weapons, one for each class. 1 new map, covered with buggy beastmen. 20 dollar asking price. Adds beastmen to all maps, so you can't escape once you purchase unless you disable the DLC from the library (which I recommend once you get the new weapons anyway, you can keep them regardless).

Not enough content? How about a combat rework more than a year after the development of the game that re-introduces a massive host of bugs and alienates longtime players. Don't like it? Fatshark doesn't care, this was rolled out regardless of DLC purchase and after weeks and weeks of betas with constant feedback. Fatshark wants to do what Fatshark wants to do, regardless of how their community feels. That's their prerogative, but at the end of the day we determine how much they get paid.

EDIT: Combat feels a lot better. I'm still leaving this review here because it seems insane to me that it took months to make a game that was originally fun feel good again.

I've tried to withhold judgement, but frankly I don't enjoy this game anymore. Pubs can't do legend reliably at all since the patch. Nobody has any idea what's going on and it's virtually impossible to avoid taking damage (doubly so if you have sub-optimal ping). If you play with a group, this game is still challenging and very playable, if a little inconsistent, but if you wanted to just jump in and have fun like you used to this game probably isn't for you anymore. The only people I've played the game with consistently have quit over the combat changes, which (regardless of my opinion) makes it hard to justify playing at all.

Fatshark absolutely has to roll back some of the changes to horde spawning and/or modify the AI and hitmass to make up for it. As it stands, they're probably going to lose a lot of players.

This game, as of ehanced, is fantastic. It's not devoid of balance issues, it's not perfect by any means, but as with EYE it has incredible atmosphere and charm that is very rarely replicated these days.

It's genuinely very good. The story holds up better than FC4 (though that's not exactly high praise), the gameplay is pretty much the same as before, though the addition of melee weapons and planes are certainly welcome. The overall size of the arsenal isn't huge, but frankly everything feels roughly in-line with each other so you never feel like you're being restricted to a few (which FC3 and 4 certainly did). Planes are a lot of fun, companions are a lot of fun (cheeseburger being my personal favorite so far), the game looks fantastic and runs well. It also doesn't take itself too seriously as you may come to expect from Far Cry.

My only solid complaint is the opening sequence on hard is really frustrating, since you're stuck on rails for a good portion. Just throw the difficulty up once you beat the tutorial segment and you'll be fine.

Edit: The ending is the worst ending to a shooter I have ever seen, bar absolutely nothing else. Any of the three are stupid, the only one that seems logical is absurd. Honestly I can't say the story is any better than FC4 after experiencing Faith's region and the end. Send help.

Excellent shooter, plays quite a bit like Bioshock 1 and 2, with some of the inventory management from Deus Ex and art style and quality from Dishonored. There is an extreme Rapture feel from Talos 1, and the new spacewalk/fast travel system is pretty cool, which gives you a great sense of scale.

I still couldn't tell you why they decided to use the name Prey. System Shock would have been better for expectations sake. Frankly I'm a little bummed that we didn't see another game in the same vein as Prey, which was always a little closer to DOOM (that might have been why). I don't even know if they have the System Shock IP on hand.

This is a far more competitive Dawn of War, at the cost of quite a lot of content. I think it's a favorable trade-off personally, but it's pretty sad to see 8 maps on release, 3 factions, and a lack of overall army variety. Hopefully community maps and faction DLCs (which everyone will complain about and then buy anyway) will round this out a bit more down the line.

I'd say enjoy the absurd amount of salt while it lasts. It's nice not having units refuse to follow your instructions for the first time from Relic.

EDIT: I figured I should probably update this, considering Relic completely abandoned it rather than gave it the polish and post-launch that it deserved. I stand by my positive view of the game mechanically, but the absolute lack of content means that this game feels incomplete. Buy on discount, and play with friends.
