I have been a fan of dark and darker for a long time now (I have lots more hours on the Blacksmith edition of the game, not including play test hours), all the way back since play test two I have been keeping my eye on this game. I'm going to start by saying this, the developers definitely love this game and their fan-base, you have to look past the negative comments towards them for some bad ideas or changes they have made by the game - they really do listen to the communities voice and will make in-game changes according to that. Dark and Darker has had its ups and downs but even in the downs the game can be really fun. Right now i have been having the most fun playing dark and darker since its EA release and things are really looking up for the game.
The only reason that there is only mixed reviews on steam is solely because of the marketing screw up which led players into believing that it was entirely F2P, it's not, its more like a demo. Although despite it being more like a "demo" with recent patches it is a very very large portion of the game you have access to at the moment. The main thing is lack of high roller, which tbh, isnt really worth playing right now anyways, normals is the way to go.
This game is challenging, but u dont always have to play it so hardcore. You will die, that is certain. You will lose your best gear, that is guaranteed. When you do win a fight, obtain the best loot, it is such an amazing feeling and it really ropes you in.
So if you are new, just don't give up. I am telling you, once you beat the learning curve of the game it is such a fun thing to play. You can play it however you like, there are so many classes now all with unique abilities, and there are several maps with several floors. One of my favourite things to do is not go in seriously, base gear, maybe druid to troll people with rat form, or pick-pocket rogue to steal someones loot without them even knowing you are there.

I am telling you, give this game more than just a try, give it a chance. It is very rare nowadays that there is a games developer that actually wants what is best for the game and will actively implement what the community voices, within a very short amount of time too.
If the game status, or the meta is ever getting you down. Just take a break, that's what i have done in the past and then you come back with a new patch or update and there is an entirely new way to play.
