Retro FPS. Developers put a lot of thought into level design. Choice of weapons is excellent. Meaty campaign will keep you engaged throughout. Not a fan of the the flash light implementation which is required for the many dark and cramped areas and paths. Turned off the music, not a big fan besides if you need music to prop up your game your game isn't that good. Dusk plays extremely well. Good enemy design, good challenge even on the equivalent of normal.

Game has weird vibe going on with bending down to pickup soap and gerbils running through the levels "that are a real pain in the ass".

Definitely worth a play-through or two.

I have updated this review multiple times. The more you play the more you understand and the more you appreciate with the game.

Yes, Strafe is a Rogue and you accumulate XP. Fill the XP bar and you get a "whole" coin of which you can buy one of four upgrades, damage, ammo capacity, fire rate and accuracy, that is assuming you fill the bar otherwise you get nothing. Progressing through the game gets you coins. A coin is usable in only one run and it buys you a bar of one of the above attributes.

The game also has mutators like big head, rocket only, quite a few and coins can be used to unlock these mutators as well. I received 5 coins for clearing the game from the beginning of New Game Plus. Not terrible and given the number of mutators and other modes you will wind up playing the game a lot and thereby obtaining enough coins. There are plenty of mutators and they are stack-able for some really nice combinations to modify your play through.

There is no progression save for an alternate mode. The only carry over between runs of the main game are teleporter parts which you use to fix the next section's teleporter. One of the teleporter parts you literally carry and it's a challenge. There are four sections so three teleporters to fix. With each fix you can bypass the previous section's teleporter. There is your progression, at least in the main game.

STRAFE becomes addicting the longer you play. I encourage anyone who likes the genre to give the game a try. A plethora of game mechanics and plenty to learn and absorb. The game as a rogue is excellent and definitely worth your effort.

Very short FPS however the game is a blast.

If you love gibs (or "giblets[en.wikipedia.org]", gore and body chunks which fly from a game opponent when hit with such force that they rupture) you'll love Hellbound.

A very lengthy shooter. Memorable? Not really though I would consider one boss encounter memorable. I thought the level design good, the weapons great but the majority of the boss encounters lacking. I played on normal so perhaps it was matter of being too good for the difficulty. :) Dread Templar's campaign is substantial and challenging. I was engaged the whole way through. Enough enemy designs to meet expectations. A twist are the runes which change weapon or player abilities. Some of them are over done but I appreciate their inclusion. Recommended.

I want to use the word "exceptional" though there is so much more that can be done with this franchise. Star Control Origins is a highly streamlined space questing experience. Plenty of space stories, quests and interstellar battles to be had.

Very arcade like in all aspects. The battles are top down overhead using a propulsion model. An exorbitant number of ships, each with their own capabilities, to find, acquire and use for your own fleet. The mineral collecting is arcade like as well. Every planet can be landed on (press left stick in to activate landing thrusters). Just run over minerals and elements to collect. Simple but very addicting. Like collecting stars in SMB.

Imagine landing on Earth and seeing the moon. Every planet you land exposes it's surrounding planets and stars that you can see while on the planet. The voice acting is exceptional. Star Control Origins voice actors should of won an award for their performances which are corny but never the less outstanding. There are many many aliens to encounter. As i said the voice overs are great but their visual presentations are terrific as well.

I would of liked to see a market economy and a serious trading model. This does't exist and though I've put a serious amount of time into the game a trading model would of added even more length to the game. There is crafting but not in game. So many minerals and elements but yet nothing to build. Star Control Origins comes complete with space ship and building editors and a few others so you can incorporate your own creations using the same tools the developers used. The game has a Steam Workshop so that you can share your creations.

While the development team did a fantastic job on planet textures, they are still not diverse enough for my tastes. Planets have life, both botanical and mammal but there isn't enough diversity.

While there is so much more that can be done with this franchise, the game as you will find is highly streamlined, immersive and loaded with humor. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish the dlc campaign due to quest ending bugs. There are crash to desktop issues as well, one of which the developers fixed while I was playing.

An alleged combat oriented masterpiece overexposed and ultimately decapitated by forced coarsened parkour mechanics.

A bastardization of a franchise whose sole existence is to make the player feel like the ultimate soldier but somehow manages to make doom-guy an acrobat performing at Lincoln Center.

The parkour in Doom External is way overdone and interfere's with the pristine combat mechanics. Think of a stream of water, now a never ending stream of demonic blood. Doom Eternal castrates that simple formula. Game designers imitating confused beavers injecting overused parkour mechanics, building their damns to purposefully inhibit fluidity.

A disappointment.

Basic lite bullet hell with plenty of achievements to be chased. Very short, there is an achievement for beating the game in 2 minutes and change. I don't think you can get a piece of Bazooka gum for the current price of .39 cents. Game drops Arkanoid like pills for weapons and increases in the multiplier. Personally I think the ship you control is somewhat too big. Still, for the value and the achievement chasing, the game does have merit.

Apparently you can't teach old dogs new tricks or in this case Capcom is still stuck in their legacy mindset.

There is an open door. You can enter the door and you can lock the door. How you lock the door does not matter. You can lock the door.... except when the boogeyman is chasing you. Then you cannot lock the door says the big red immersive breaking X.

Inventory containers! Limited inventory! Remember limited inventory? You should! Capcom hasn't changed their inventory mechanics since the 1990's.

Want to play hide and seek? Capcom will oblige you but not provide you with a peek mechanic. Stick yourself a bit too much and in certain situations you can just press the "retry" button.

The opening to Resident Evil 7 is incredible. What follows... lets just to say I've seen better from indie studios. Capcom should try challenging themselves instead of resorting to old habits. Capcom's refreshed version of Survival Horror and ninth iteration would be better served if their design team was refreshed.

Resident Evil 2 is still the benchmark and destroys Resident Evil 7 in every way. A talented studio that needs new direction.

Only half-way through Leon's campaign. Apparently one of four campaigns. I've been on a Resident Evil sojourn having just completed every prior game.

Prior to playing I was looking forward to writing my 8th straight positive Resident Evil review and calling out the obsessive naysayers for who they are and for being stuck in some Resident Evil template. I can't do it. They were right and on multiple fronts. They deserve your respect.

The story so far is within the bounds of Resident Evil stories and like many of the previous games the story evolves so slowly. The Resident Evil moniker or any semblance ends there.

The environments are the only redeeming value and the game looks AAA but it's a cluster f**k and I don't use that term lightly. Horrendous controls to start, ridiculous game mechanics, amateur GUI design, QTE hell and monster closets galore making the game more like Rebellion's Zombie Army series.

Again, apparently FOV was not a thing in 2013 having to be fixed by community utilities such as Flawless Widescreen saving us from arrogant game designers who adamantly refuse to provide choice and treat consumers as atomic lemmings.

I approached ready to forgive any Resident Evil transgressions however I just can't do it anymore. Yes, I've read the game has a boat load of content. Four campaigns to sail away on. To immerse yourself in Zombie blood and saliva. To vomit on the cadaverous odors of the undead. To experience the tension of what may lurk around the corner. To see what the creative Capcom minds have unleashed upon unsuspecting players. No, it wasn't to be.

Perhaps I'll continue playing just for the story or perhaps not. Junk doesn't deserve to be experienced, it deserves to be thrown out. Purgamentum!

Such a mixed bag but Capcom still remembers how to finish. 2015 game was designed for release episodically on 2005 consoles on up so what we wind up with is a lot of ugly looking shoe box environments. Character models look really good on PC @4K though the increased resolution will do nothing for the 2005 textures. Story is Resident Evil good though takes too long to actually get moving. You may approve of the slow burn and all.

Controls; RB to shoot and LB to aim. If you fancy RT and LT as is the standard your good friends at Valve have created such an awesome mapping utility in which you can either map the entire controller or map the controller for this specific game. Mapping for this specific game is the better choice but Valve's utility is so good that it even differentiates between soft pull and hard pull for triggers so make sure to map both or just download my config which is labeled something akin to Type A: Triggers and Bumpers Switched. Don't forget to enable Steam Input.

Unlike Resident Evil 5 you play a pair of switchable characters. Here is where the game earns its merits. The alternates in each pair are given non-combat unique abilities and making for an excellent solo / cooperative experience rescuing the otherwise damage done by occasional technical glitches, the horrendous FOV and the 2005 mud-caked environments.

In the end a worthy entry though coming off all previous Resident Evil games sequentially and this game through episode 3 that in my mind was still a debate until finishing episode 4.
