Many speak of The Last Remnant as being different. True in a sense given the concept of unions however the game in a nutshell comes down to fight the most enemy unions at one time that is feasibly possible. Exploration helps tremendously with progression. The link system in which you select enemy unions is extremely addictive.

Surprisingly grinding is minimal. The combat system is insanely well thought out. Your union leaders matter as does protecting vulnerable unions. Disengaging an enemy union at the wrong time can prove catastrophic. The much spoken about BR or Battle Rank system in honestly nothing more than a gimmicky veil. It's all about character progression. I can go on for a 50 page essay but I'll just leave it here.

The FOV is terrible though editing a config file solves this problem quite nicely. The game looks great for a 2009 production and runs in 4K super sampled.

Perhaps one day S/E will bring the remastered version to Steam and return this masterpiece to the worlds greatest digital gaming platform.

Innovative and relatively unique chain scoring horizontal shooter very dependent on shot timing and not button mashing. Your shot's strength, let's call a shot a triggering munition, is based on a power bar at the bottom of the screen which in turn means the game requires patience while under pressure to build the power required to initiate a comprehensive screen clearing chain reaction.

Unexploded ordinance piles up behind you further limiting your secure and protective area. Touch a boundary you die, touch any part of the pile you die, touch anything unexploded you die. With additional stages the game becomes progressively challenging with each stage ending in an enhanced battle requiring a proper chain reaction to declare victory.

The game was developed using XNA which means according to the developer that a full screen option could not be included. Further, the game will start windowed partially off-screen. No matter, solved easily with utilities like Lossless Scaling here on Steam that will allow you to play full screen and in 4K or 4K scaled (set your desktop to 4K) which is ideally the optimal resolution, that is 3840x800 . Lossless Scaling's demo also serves this purpose so no additional purchase required.

The game looks fantastic in 4K and significantly adds to the overall experience. The game is tagged with partial controller support though I was able to execute every functional aspect with a controller. Easily a Steam hidden gem. Awesome concept, challenging, achievements etc... A++.

Requires patience and persistence to get leveled to a point where you can enjoy this supposedly throwback RPG. Food requirements, temple buffs, expensive items, hard hitting enemies, limited exploration and limited funds exacerbate the introductory experience.

I've done enough analysis to get into the game and found that those that reach a certain threshold have a significantly enhanced experience over the start. Not to say that difficulty at the start is a bad RPG attribute but this one I found a little too much to stomach and ultimately lost interest.

A thumbs down but only for the start. There is a solid experience to be had if you can get there. I'm sure I'll try and tackle this again.

Bad-ass twin stick rogue-like implemented by seriously talented developers. Perfect in every way with extreme vibes from the PS3's Super Stardust HD and Star-ship Troopers. This magnificent twin-stick is played out on gorgeous looking spherical play-fields with a good progression system and 2 additional un-lockable characters.

Progression is character independent allowing for good longevity though the game's stages can get repetitive. Stages though remain challenging and hold your interest as you advance in ability. The game can be difficult but stick with it and as you invest into character, drone or weapon attributes you will be rewarded with new play-field dynamics as you progress.

A real Steam hidden gem.

With the series now consisting of four iterations is the 2015 version of Ride worth your time? The answer is definitively yes though online servers have been disabled and as of this writing I am not aware of anyway to play this iteration of the series online.

Ride 1 has tracks not available in other iterations of the series. The game is richly rewarding and there is great racing to be experienced here before moving onto other versions of the series. Tracks vary from known tracks like Donnington and Road America to city tracks like Miami Florida to Forest and other remote locations.

The highest of the five implemented difficulties will in most cases provide a really nice challenge. Much like Forza in this regard the top of the A.I. pack will in most instances is faster than the rest. There are a couple of bikes on a track or two that I was able to overwhelm the A.I. though these instances are very limited.

The rewind implementation differs from Forza in that if you crash immediately after ending the rewind the game will not immediately rewind again leaving you unable to fix your mistake. I see this as a good compromise between being able to fix your mistake or suffering the consequences if you fail twice in succession. Another nice feature is the ability to restart a race and get credit for the last race something that Forza does not implement requiring a reload of the track if you want credit for finishing.

The game is broken down by bike class and each set of events is introduced with a voiced history. Additionally every bike is also supplemented by introductory text and a brief history.

Visuals are very good and the game supports multiple resolutions through 4K though you will have to tinker with the executable's compatibility mode to get higher resolutions working. On another compatibility issue my processor initially had trouble running the game at stable frame rates. This was fixed by turning off CPU0 in the process's affinity setting.

There are bugs, notably a save game bug. I recommend turning off the Steam cloud and manually backing up the save location to your own cloud like OneDrive every few races and not overwriting your own cloud saves. I also a a few CTD but not enough to be annoying.

A QOL issue hopefully addressed in future versions are your saved tunes which need to be applied to your bike every-time you start a series of races like a championship.

Track time penalties are enforced when cutting corners and for the most part these are very well implemented as there is a reasonable amount of leeway provided by the game. On the other hand there are no post race lap times which I found especially odd given the attention to detail in other areas of the game. Events are marked as completed but the bike used and the difficulty achieved is not communicated to the user. This would especially be useful for users to know from a replay-ability perspective.

When you start there is an internal or non public facing board which ranks you IIRC around 250 though only after a few wins you can reach number one making this board more of an after thought. Event types consist of time attack, single race, team race, drag, head to head, overtake and a multi race championship. The drag event is very bare bones and offers little challenge besides upgrading your bike with the best parts.

The UI features many k/b prompts so I doubt you can play this without a keyboard for the menus. Racing is fully supported by a controller.

In summary the original Ride offers a great introduction to the series and is a really good effort by Milestone. I'm looking forward to the playing the rest of the series. A+

This is a tough one only because some design decisions will determine acceptance. BAFL is a purely top down one screen power-up circuit racer in the spirit of Super Sprint . Controls at first can be awkward. Like Water Machado's Warp Zone Drifter synchronizing your controller to your perspective (brain) may take a bit. The obvious intent in BAFL is, without upgrades, to make the car difficult to control. Frequently hitting walls and repairing whether mid-track or pit-stop is a strategic element that does work well. The question is, is the game fun?

Through a campaign of 10 races you choose one of three difficulties. Post race you are allocated some points to invest in 5 attributes. There is an unobtainable 6th but you know "Brakes Are For Losers". That is indeed a cute touch and the rest of the professional presentation is terrific.

As you upgrade attributes your car becomes more controllable though how controllable depends on your level of skill and therein lies the crux. Higher skill may translate into enjoyment where otherwise you may set this title aside out of frustration and not because you won't be winning but because the game will turn into a wall riding fest. Additionally BAFL is extremely repetitive unless you have friends to participate in PVP (shared / split-screen or remote play) where I can easily see this arcade top down racer really shine.

Still recommended especially with friends.

Whereas Penumbra Overture and Black Plague kept me intrigued this mod falls flat from nearly the beginning. There is a sense of been here done that and perhaps it's just too much of the same. Initially there is bare narrative and not being a pure puzzle aficionado I require an interesting narrative to push me along. Another reason I let this one go early and not helping the situation the mod is also subject to extreme frame drops and thus killing the excellent atmosphere carried over from the previous game. There are story inconsistencies though I didn't play long enough to find out their meaning if one indeed exists.

Overture and Black Plague albeit their age and other oddities are good games with a good story and definitely worth playing. Requiem is a dlc to Black Plague so one would naturally believe Requiem would be a continuation or at the very least an extension of the previous two. It's not.

Others who have traversed this series before me have indeed found out long ago what Requiem is. A crummy disjointed puzzle laden deviation and not in any way consistent with the two previous endeavors. Others have reviews which go into more detail and those reviews are more entertaining than Requiem.

Next stop: Penumbra Necrologue.

Frictional Games of Amnesia and SOMA fame first horror adventure and you can tell based on clunky controls, unwieldy combat, stilted animations and awful path-finding. Saved however by an awesome atmosphere enhanced with terrific sound design and exceptionally well written and voiced narratives. Enable save on demand (F4) in the .ini file.

FH4 Review: Forza Horizon 4 weened me off of The Witcher 3. Nothing in sight that will ween me off of Forza Horizon 4.

FH5 Review: Forza Horizon 5 weened me off of Forza Horizon 4. Nothing in sight that will ween me off of Forza Horizon 5.

FH5 has so many improvements over FH4. Too many to enumerate. A true sequel and an excellent job by Playground Games.

FH5 runs great on a 1st gen I7 (yes I'm upgrade stubborn) so if you're below the minimum cpu requirements don't sweat it. Important to have at least 12 gb of ram (at points in the game I am using 90% of ram) and an average gpu (590x 8gb Vram). 60 FPS @ 1080P.

Edit: Nominated GOTY Award
