Apex Legends is a battle royal based on the story of Titanfall, set after the events of Titanfall 2. It is a battle royale with a beautiful visual style and incredible characters with unusual political representation. Not being all present, the characters themselves have a broad range of personality, with voice lines and character costumes that really maximize their look and feel.

Unfortunately, some very drastic changes have happened to this game more than once, reducing and re-collecting the player base on multiple occasions. Ranked play has been altered dramatically several times, with the rating system taking very big changes, characters being nerfed into worthlessness (though this is common in competitive games), and even console-PC crossplay compatibility introducing assisted aim into ranked play on all platforms.

This game is not without controversy, but despite its major changes through the years, the combat and style remain exceptionally good. The visual style is somewhere on a spectrum between realistic and cartoon with more emphasis on realism. The weapons feel like a realistic game's guns with slightly less drop and significantly smaller magazine and clip sizes. Picking up loot is enjoyable and very easy to manage. The weapon visual style is futuristic, but not exceedingly so. This game ends up feeling like a near-future gun royale with deep character and a movement rich first-person shooter.

I don't like battle royales, but this one is an exception. If you don't like them either, give Apex Legends a shot.
