Recommendations vary between mains, but here is what I say.
1. Get comfortable in a map, to the point in which you can explain every detail in any situation.
2. While doing 1, play sniper for a very long time, hopefully building muscle memory and general profiles on how classes play on that map.
Continue doing those things against "real" people, until you are confident. Then crush your confidence by fighting more skilled people, and trying to move that skill to other maps.
Afterwards you can further refine your skills however you see fit, while also failing to dodge vote kicks every other match.
