I also liked Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit for that reason. Wish more games in that style.
Also try different modes when you can't beat a race: modern vs classic. In classic enemies don't respawn, so you know what to do. But so do you, so if you can't keep yourself alive - use modern again.
Knowing that stuff makes the game quite enjoyable, i guess most were disappointed there's no multiplayer, and maybe that weird money vs campaign progression as well.
