~'Monster Crown will be to Pokemon what Stardew Valley is Harvest Moon.'~

I think if this game continues to develop along the same trajectory and the same vision this game will be sexy. At the moment it's got a fair few bugs and a few mechanics and things that need better explanation and polish but the strong foundation and the refreshing angle is there. I'm so addicted at the moment even bugs can't stop me but no doubt this'll be a lot more fun and less confusing on full release, I'd probably recommend buying it then so as not to 'spoiler' yourself or buying it now to be supportive and waiting because otherwise you'll be pouncing on every update like a rabid otter.

Positives:

+ THE BREEDING SYSTEM IS CRAY - like you can get different types versions of ur monsters, I mean imagine a fire type squirtle. They aren't just recolours either like yokai watch (which I love) but full designs. There's a lot of content just in breeding alone.

+ Overworld wild monsters and optional trainer battles - honestly the worst thing about Pokemon is bumping into your 50th spearow which they keep adding to each ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ generation too. It just makes you hate the monsters which is who you're supposed to love. These overworld boiz jump over crap to chase you too so it's more engaging too. Sometimes they seem to form a little gang and wait to lynch you.

+ Partially Open world 2D - unusual angle, quite fun although obviously at the moment some bits aren't accessible.

+ Not too easy - You can totally run into overlevelled monsters and make mistakes, but it isn't brutal about it. It's up to you what to pursue. Reminds me of Divinity Original Sin 2 where you can go the wrong way and get in over your head if you want. Like real exploration in real life.

+ Dark and unrestrictive storyline - The storyline isn't predictable and cookie cutter but it's fairly loose too, it doesn't dictate where you can explore etc. (Ties into the open world aspect)

+ Very engaging and passionate developer - Are you stuck? Did the game bug out on you? Do you have a suggestion? Hit the discussion board.

+ Quality of life mechanics - Most rpgs have a bit of grind, I wouldn't say this game is particularly grindy but it does have a scout feature to help you battle for exp really quickly without going into battle animation. The game having these kinda things is really handy.

- Sometimes the power of some monsters can be a bit too wild of a swing. My Fu, has a really strong attack (forgot the name) thts power of 10 and he just steamrolls a lot of monsters even of the same level regardless of typing. Different Monsters usually don't have the same strength in games but I feel this guy came a little early in the game for his strength. Of course now he's my favourite.

- The sprites for the female characters look feminine but her artwork doesn't match. It'd be nice for the artwork to match up for that, I'm quite girly so I want my main to look girly.

- Spoilers lol - This is a personal preference so not really a true criticism but a lot of trainers have whole parties of mons I haven't seen or had chance to breed yet and so it kinda 'spoilers' them for me, so I try to battle without looking! However you can just choose not to battle them which I think I'll do in future. I don't think the developer should change this but if anyone is a bit weird like me I totally recommend avoiding trainers for a bit.

- bugs - but that's part of being EA, save often!

Conclusion - Buy it now or buy it later, either way it's good for you - Mom.

Good story, combat and explanation, but mostly that the characters felt more interesting than in most RPG games. Highly recommend.

I play a lot of VNs and I like to go for a deep and unique story, I rarely play for the romance I assumed I was a little old and jaded for that. Despite this being an otome I didn't really buy it other than for the reason that the premise intrigued me. However the game made me, a lady in her mid twenties, a blushing teen again and that's no easy task! While sometimes the dialogue is tropey, you genuinely care about learning more about the characters, and it brings a warm atmosphere (unlike Amnesia, which while being well written plot wise isn't a good choice for romance it's better as a thriller). This game isn't going to win awards for breaking any gender roles (but that's okay sometimes the patriarchy needs a cuddle too) or crazy deep plot, but it's good at what it does and is a solid romance VN. Even my boyfriend bought and played it, we managed to guess who the other picked straight away!

Honestly this is the only game I wish I'd got a refund for, that's not to say I haven't played other bad games on steam, but this one is expensive and really get's your hopes up, especially if you've played divinity orginal sin which is a fantastic game.

The political choices aspect feels really threadbare for me, it's always obvious which policy will gain whose favour and the characters themselves are pretty one dimensional. As for the combat, honestly I couldn't get my dragon to even fight properly, and aside from the dragon the combat feels really boring, this is no command and conquer, it's very thin on the ground, not many units and fairly repetitive. I will say however it's very pretty and I loved the opening cutscenes but honestly go play their other games, this isn't the dragon game we've all been waiting for.
