If you understand the Korean mind/grindset or liked anything about early Warframe (pre open-world), give it a go. There's no PvP and you can reach the same power as someone who drops $ so I don't understand where this P2W mindset is coming from. People mention drop rates but you have to remember that a 20% chance does not mean, you'll get it in 5 runs or even 20 or 50 runs. It's a CHANCE, not a guarantee. Can you spend $? Yes, to skip the grind in a game about grinding out stuff. The pricing on cosmetics is a bit egregious but that'd be my only complaint really. If you're paranoid about "muh information" then live paranoid I guess. If you've opened Google, Facebook or literally any social-media app in the last 2 decades your info is already being bought and sold. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I will preemptively state I didn't do any PvP and this is solely from a PvE perspective.

The game does a good job aesthetically and the ability to traverse 2 worlds at the same time was pretty cool. However, the borrowed aesthetic from Blasphemous and lamp gimmick can only carry the game for so long as once you get beyond the first real boss (Pieta) the rest of the game starts to feel like a chore with no real payoff. That's not to say that the boss fights themselves were bad but they weren't exactly engaging. The problem is that it's because their mechanics are pretty easy to figure out and the excitement of staring at a completed puzzle for 5-10 min because the health bars are just absurd is just monotonous. I never really hit a wall per-se and was making pretty steady progress, but I never felt like I was actually having fun doing any of the stuff the game was asking of me.

I experimented with weapons and spells and was honestly let down with how unimpactful any weapon felt unless I was 2-handing a great weapon. Spells and thrown items felt too niche to really build anything around since normal mobs seem built like sponges. So unless you're just running by everything, good luck having any amount of resources for your boss that probably won't die from your pea-shooter spells/thrown items. Shields are a joke as normal shields barely offer any sort of resistance higher than just blocking with the weapon itself, the only real benefit being a "higher parry window" which is honestly laughable. Even Greatshields have piss-poor defensive capabilities as the they still chunk you regardless. Which begs the question of why you're even investing in the item in the first place when you can just dump into Endurance and effectively get more i-frames from back-stepping/rolling. So overall my experience felt like I was pretty much being pigeonholed into an unga-bunga loadout, and if there's anything I hate in games, it's the illusion of choice rather than actually having one.

I won't repeat what countless others have mentioned in terms of performance as I was running the game just fine and the devs are pumping out optimization patches almost daily (which begs the question of whether or not they even tested the game on multiple setups to begin with) so surely it can only get better, right? RIGHT?!

All-in-all the game just feels... okay at it's best and outright annoying at it's worst.

-TLDR at the bottom-

I don't normally leave reviews simply because I feel as though most of the time reviews tend to overwhelm a game and get lost among a sea of other reviews that are just filled with misinformation. I'll preface with the fact that I played through on Normal difficulty with the hardest survival option. If I were the dev, this is how I'd want people to experience their first playthrough.

THAT SAID: I will say that the upgrade system for armor and the combat among the open world enemies felt very 2nd-hand compared to what the game is actually centralized around, the climbing of large creatures. Aside from a bow, you literally don't need a weapon. The only thing you need is an axe for the wood to make arrows, fires and the occasional grappling hook. You can headshot (1-shot) wildlife to get meat and there's a couple bosses where a bow is almost mandatory. Aside from that, you have no reason to do combat.

The survival system I think brings a unique and honestly needed challenge to this game. Without the survival aspect (and another I'll touch on shortly), I would have probably completed the story in half the time. There were a couple times where I found myself low on hunger or sleep and I had to prepare to go into a boss-area for fear that my stamina would just keep me from moving forward in a timely fashion. So kudos for the addition of something (albeit minimal) that separates this game from just being an obvious love-letter to SotC.

Much like SotC, this game also rewards exploration. Usually it's in the form of statues you can increase your stamina or health (idk why you'd ever choose health tbh). Alternatively, this game has another set of armor hidden away in specific caves with fairly fun puzzles. However, be warned that the armor doesn't really feel that rewarding as there was only a 1 point difference in defense and cold resist at max upgrade (at least for gloves). It's a nice touch that rewards exploration that completionists/collectors can appreciate. The armor is a different look, it's something to collect, and you get to see a bit more gameplay as a result.

Now for the "bad" parts I felt. The game takes an attempt at a physics/momentum-based system for movement and there are time where it shines (sail cloth) and others where it can become downright frustrating. There were plenty of times where I'd traverse the map and walk up a hill only to reach the top just before the lip to slide all the way back down. This is remedied most of the time with the grapple-hook (the grapple-hook is your friend). The other gripe I had was that certain bosses (I won't say which as I'm trying to keep this as spoiler free as possible) just felt a bit more irritating than others due to the limitations of the hook-shot and the limited availability of a starting point to climb onto. There's also a mechanic that's introduced at the end of the game that is a stamina SINK because it slows down your surroundings without your input. This slowdown in time eats your stamina, thus draining your hunger and sleep meters at INCREDIBLE rates making the last couple bosses a real slog.

I honestly feel as if this game could have been a platformer and it would probably be much more well received as it wouldn't have the combat or minimal crafting to get in the way of the story that's trying to be told here (this is a fantastic story for those in the know of Norse mythology).

I would say the game is worth the price of admission at full cost as for $30, I got a unique story, fantastic music, roughly 10 hours of playtime and an overall enjoyable experience. The game has its flaws but it's the flaws that set it apart instead of a copy and it's something I can respect from an indie dev. I can tell this is a work of love and an obvious loveletter to SotC that I wouldn't realistically expect more from since this is literally a team of a few people and not Japan Studios or Sony.

TLDR:
-Good story
-Good music
-Only mildly frustrating with movement (takes getting used to)
-Rewarding exploration
-VERY LIGHT combat
-VERY LIGHT Survival (toggle-able)
-Puzzles
-You can pet the dog
-Worth $30 if you like SotC and Nordic mythology

This game is NOT pay 2 win. The only thing you absolutely have to throw money at are character skins. Everything else comes with playing the game and buying items/perks with in-game currency. You will be destroyed when you get out of the Recruit bracket by those who have been playing longer. Not always due to items/perks but due to the fact that the people still playing know what they are doing.

Pros:
+Fast paced
+Team focused (you will die if you go alone)
+Runs extraordinarily smooth (provided your latency isn't garbage)
+You feel like you've earned your upgrades (provided you didn't pay out of pocket)

Cons:
+Matchmaking can be slow (I played in a pre-made group)
+Team/class balancing is needed (Reaver stacking >.<)
+People complaining about "P2W" when it isn't there
