A hanuka története több mint kétezer évvel ezelőttre nyúlik vissza, amikor a hatalmukat - és vallásukat - Júdeára is kiterjeszteni kívánó szelekuida-görögök IV. Antiokhosz parancsára bevonultak Jeruzsálembe. Az uralkodó akkorra már kiterjesztette befolyását Egyiptomra, Szíria és Palesztina egy részét pedig meg is szerezte, az uralma alatt álló területeket pedig egységesíteni kívánta, egyebek közt vallási szempontból is. Ennek jegyében betiltotta a Biblia tanítását, számos helyen állíttatott fel görög isteneket ábrázoló szobrokat, a zsidó papoknak pedig disznót kellett - volna - áldozniuk azok tiszteletére.
