A super fun PvE game that scratches a lot of the same itch that Warframe scratches for me, but with a different setting and gunplay.

Knowing that the devs are huge Warhammer 40k fans answers a lot of the questions as to where their influences came from. It's really an off-brand Warhammer game where you play as military grunt chaff that is thrown at Termanids (bugs) and Automatons (Terminator robots). You are given big guns and artillery/space-laser/air-support to blow up the enemies of DEMOCRACY!

The gameplay is incredibly repetitive (land on planet, kill hordes of enemies and boss-enemies, complete missions and side-missions, extract before time or respawns run out). But despite the repetitive gameplay it never really gets dull to me. It is always a wildly different match every time and it has the ingredients in each session to craft incredibly cinematic scenes of destruction/valor, or hilarious mishaps of blowing your team-mates to pieces because they got too close to your air drop, bomb, etc.

Helldivers 2 is a fun time-sink with a satisfying gameplay loop. I can see myself putting a ton of time into it, especially since it seems like the devs are actively involved with the community and adding new things often.

Interesting sci-fi thriller. The story was fairly interesting and the characters didn't feel over the top. Puzzles were fun and a few of them actually took me awhile to figure out. The entire game is just moving around the station and solving puzzles while listening to the story. Which is fine with me, but be aware that this game is basically just walking around and clicking on puzzles. The ending could have been done a little better though. Felt like the writer couldn't figure out how he wanted to end the story so they just made it super vague so that they didn't have to explain anything.

I got 20 hours into the game before I realized I could invest in shops and caravans to help supplement my income. I was going out and fighting armies/bandits to try and stay in the green with my expensive army. Didn't even know investing and trading caravans was a thing.

This game is so in depth there's parts of it that I've not even been able to experience yet (and some others that I didn't even know existed). You can do so many different things in this game that you probably won't get to it all on your first character. Want to be a merchant and buy an army that does all your fighting? Want to start off as a warrior and eventually become a general or king? Rather be a bandit and start your own bandit clan/region? The options are so variable you can try something new often enough that the game will not become stale

PoE has scratched an itch that I could never get with Diablo and seeing that this game is basically a spiritual successor to Diablo II it does a lot of things right.

The sheer amount of build diversity is enough to keep you playing this game for a long time, and a new season hits every 3 months so you can start fresh with everyone else if you choose to do so. A new league is part of the fun and excitement of the game.

There are 6 characters to choose from that all fit an archetype but because of the passive tree being all interconnected, you can really make any of the characters into anything. Some of them just have an easier go at it. Like you can have a necromancer (pet build) paladin. You can do a magic user rogue. I play a different build every league and it's like a new game each time. Trying to figure out how to make a build that deletes mobs and bosses is half the fun.

If you enjoy looters and ARPGs then you'll dig this one without a doubt. Plus the devs are great people that stay on top of their game.

Grab a controller and play this game. Where else can you beat the hell out of giant monsters with comically large weapons and guns.

I picked this game up originally based on the hype around it and because I wanted something I could play co-op with my g/f. I had never played the 1st game but heard many good things about it as well so I figured this game would have more of the same great gameplay but with better polish.

To start off, the game was a bit hard for me as I didn't have as much experience with RPGs of this style. I failed numerous times before I even got out of the 1st area of the game (Fort Joy). Fights were unforgiving alongside having very few abilities and almost no armor. These early levels were frustrating at times as I would have to quick-reload to try and get better RNG on some fights. But as the game progresses you get stronger and fights become less about RNG and more about good strategy and positioning.

The class/ability combinations are what keep me playing this game. I've beaten it once already but I'm on my 2nd playthrough so I can try out a new party and new abilities. My first playthrough was as a geomancer/fire mage, my 2nd is as a warfare/polymorph/necromancer. The difference in play style makes the game feel brand new. There are some class combinations that make the game feel a bit trivial (like my Fane that was Summoner/Hydro which didn't require INT to be useful, so I dumped all his stats into CON and WITs; he was nearly unkillable the entire game and his summon wrecked everything).

The story itself was very well scripted. I was actually invested and interested in the story during the entire game. There were a few times where I would gloss over something that felt like a sidequest that I didn't care too much about (maybe 2 quests in the entire game). All the rest of the missions felt like they had weight to them and were played out by complex and interesting characters. There were at least 3 times where I thought "alright, this has to be the end of the game" and then it kept going.

I easily put in 110-115 hours during my 1st playthrough and I didn't even do EVERYTHING there was to do. I'm certain that I could have taken another 10-15 hours to go and explore other places and check other avenues of dialogue.

This game has a ton of replayability in that all the party members have unique storylines that can be explored as well as unique ways of playing out certain scenes (choose to side with Character A instead of B; choose to kill Character C instead of allow him to live; etc).

Also, not mentioned often, but if you have the time and energy, the Game Master Mode (lets you play out a DnD game using a game creating tool) is a lot of fun to play around with.

I'd 100% suggest that anyone with an RPG itch that loves to make characters, invest in story, and try out interesting class combos to pick this game up. I got a ton of playtime out of this game and I'm not even finished with my 2nd playthrough. Adding in the ability to co-op makes it even better in that you can fire this up with friends and run through the game together.

At it's price point ($30) you get a lot for what you pay.

I've put a little bit of time into the game but I can already tell that I'll be putting more in as time goes on. I've beat all the maps there are to offer and they're all refreshing to play through. I have a handful that are my favorites to play, but I never have one pop up in quickplay and think "ah man, not this one."

Playing on Recruit difficulty with characters that are low power and don't have all their talents is a bit tough to begin with. I know myself and others had experiences where we didn't finish a map successfully the first few times we tried it. Eventually though you get strong enough and figure out the mechanics well enough to push through. I still have times though where I get an unlucky boss spawn and get destroyed as I'm trying to push through the map. The difficulties look to be a bit like Diablo3 in that as you get stronger you can ramp up the difficulty to get better drops/more-exp. As it currently stands, I've only tried Recruit and it already kicks my ass in some aspects. Once I get more gear and talents I'll try the later difficulties.

As for the classes themselves, they all feel great to play though I gravitated more towards Marcus and Vyktor (Mercenary and Witch Hunter). The big two handers that Marcus can use alongside the shotguns are fun to toy around with and feel amazing when cleaving through large groups of enemies. The piercing weapons (rapier, flail) that bypass armor feel great on Vyktor as as well (and his specials for all 3 subclasses are fun to use). There are of course some "OP" builds for classes that you may see at higher level (as they are almost required in order to do harder difficulties), but at recruit all the classes feel viable for play by anyone and everyone. I also tried out the dwarf who has an amazing "tank" subclass that is perfect for helping to protect your team if you're more into the support side of play.

Overall this game is a lot of fun and I can see myself coming back to it often to get a match in here and there. It's a game where you can put a lot of time into it or just pick it up to hack through some monsters while bored. I look forward to seeing what the devs add to the game at a later date (more maps, classes, weapons?).

Fallout 4 has an interesting story to begin with and the Fallout world (if you're a fan) is great to be within. But you'll slowly begin to see that wear away as you progress further into the game. This is a Fallout game front to back, but after awhile the combat, NPC interaction, and story start to get old or outright stale.

The combat is fun and the perk system is a great take on it. But after a time you will find yourself auto-piloting through most combat encounters. There isn't really anything that makes the combat interesting and nothing that you can use aside from your weapons to spice things up. After killing the Nth mutant with a long-range rifle, you get kind of bored and wish you had gone down another perk tree.

The most criticism I've seen is from the interaction system and how bare-bones it is. You get a chat wheel that shows you the IDEA behind what your character will say, not what they actually say to the NPC. So it'll show "sarcastic" or something akin to that and then you'll say something snarky back. But you never get to see what that whole response is before you select the 1 word on the wheel. The one saving grace is that you can download a mod that will pull the sentence onto the comm wheel so you can see what that option begins with as dialogue. But that doesn't save the game as much when the dialogue options don't really make a huge difference. There wasn't really a reason for me to play through a separate time because your decisions largely make no difference. So what you choose to say or do doesn't really do much. There is perhaps a small handful of events that actually change an outcome based on how you act or talk. But they are few and far between.

And finally the story was something I was interested in to begin with until it started unraveling further and I realised that it wasn't very well thought out and felt kind of pasted together. Some of the story lines don't feel very connected and feel more like someone trying to find any connection to place them in a flow and sticking with that. The culmination of the story didn't feel like it had any weight and I wasn't attached to anyone or anything going through. Most of the NPCs didn't have much depth to them and I left the game really only enjoying the interactions with Nick Valentine. Aside from that, the game's story didn't connect me at all with anyone from the other factions or from the main story.

Overall, it's a Fallout game. If you enjoy the Fallout universe then I would say that you should pick this up if you ever see it on a steep sale. But I would never advise to buy this for full price unless you absolutely love the Fallout universe and want to throw the devs/prods your money.

EDIT: I've picked this game back up in May 2018 and have been having more fun with it. Now that the game has been out longer there is a much larger mod pool to pull from. I've downloaded about 38 mods that improve the quality of life and make the game look and feel a lot better. The mods make the world feel more alive and the combat have some more interesting outcomes. The downside is that the story still isn't all that engaging. I've only picked it back up to play through and scope out the eye-candy the mods provide for the characters and environment (and to toy around with combat mods). I've been speed forwarding through all dialogue and just having fun with trying out new combat styles.

Keeping the review as a "no" from me in that it's still not a very meaty game that is worthy of the Fallout lore and universe. If the game didn't need mods for me to come back to it, then I'd call it a "yes" buy. Hopefully they do better with Fallout 5.

This game has such a large following for a reason, it was the game that seemed to break much of the mainstream players into RPGs back in the late 90's. Of course there were earlier Final Fantasy games (and other RPGs like Chrono Trigger) that were amazing, but this one happened to come about when gaming was beginning to become much more widespread, and with the advent of 3-dimensional gaming, this was THE RPG to have on your Playstation. If you've ever wanted to see what all the fuss was about, I say give it a play at least once. Playing this is akin to going back and reading a Classic book just so that you can say that you have had the experience, except that you will probably have a lot more fun with this.

Pros:
- The story is amazing and has depth to it that you may not expect. Yes it follows that trope of "hero has to save the world" but you may find your characters aren't as all-powerful as you might expect, and the story has an organic feel where your characters actually progress in personality as the story unfolds
- Characters in this game are memorable and all have their own personalities and reasons for joing up. Each character has character progression and you learn more about them as the game goes on. As the game's story unfolds you'll learn more about each character as they come to the forefront.
- The vastness of the world, and the multitude of sights there are to see will make it where you never feel like you're in the same place twice. Each area of the game has its own map layout, its own scenery, and its own vibe. The only time you ever feel like you've been there before is when you get to the snow area.
-The music is some of the most memorable and iconic music of the franchise as well as RPGs in general. There's a reason that this game's OST has been performed by grand orchestras in the past. You'll find yourself humming the tunes to the fights, parades, and Shinra as you go about your day
- The materia system for magic is actually interesting and allows you to combine and play with how the spells behave. Want to make your fire hit every enemy, leech HP, AND cause another effect? Then you can do it. Late game you can pull off some crazy combos by using Mime to mimic the last magics that your previous character cast.

Cons:
- The graphics did not age too well if this is your first step back into 90's RPGs. It doesn't have the pop and vibrance of sprite-art like from the SNES years, and it doesn't have the polish and wow-factor of recent games. You will see harsh polygons on your character and the backgrounds, however gorgeous, will have some fuzz to them because of poly-count. In battle though the models look a little more polished and rounded off. But for running around, you have block hands and no nose. (You can download mods for this game however that replace the character models with higher polycount models that look more akin to Advent Children, but it's a large mod; do some googling)
- Turn-based battles can become a little tiresome if you're not a fan or not used to having to wait for your character's turn to hit. If this is your 1st step back in RPG time, you may find it bothersome if you're used to real-time combat.
- Late game if you have all the best materia and know how to cheese the materia combos, then every fight becomes a joke. If you can combo the strongest summon spell with the materia that causes it to cast more than once, and then your next character Mimes that cast, then you can cast the strongest spells in the game, over and over and over on each character. Emerald and Ruby WEAPON (hardest optional bosses in the game) as well as the Final boss become trivial if you have this combo set up. On the plus side, you have to put a lot of hours and complete some challenges to get the materia for this combo
