Do yourself a favour and play Volume 2 of Nekopara.

The GUI and music remains mostly the same as the previous two instalments, which is nice because if it ain't broke, you've no reason to fix it.

The music in this game is seriously well done. Visual novel music has always managed to impress me, but the music in this series has seriously caught me off guard. It's so exceptionally designed that it's just so pleasing to listen to. Even if I don't play the games that much (because it's story driven, there's not a whole lot of replayability), I still find myself listening to the OST every once and a while. If a game's OST has left that much of an impact on you, you've definitely done something right.

The visuals for this game are stunning. The character sprites, the animations, the backgrounds, the CGs, all of it. They all look astounding in terms of quality. I understand that NekoWorks is more than one person and so the quality of these games will definitely be higher than that of an indie dev. Going off of that, it would be unfair to draw any comparisons, but I have to admit that when I look upon this game's artwork, it all just fits together so well. With other visual novels, I sometimes find that the artwork doesn't hit me the same way as it does in this. In this game, the artwork truly shines.

The voice acting is wonderful. You can tell that each of the VAs truly went all out with their roles, whether that was capturing the whole dynamic of sisters having an argument with each other, to the more sensual and intimate exchanges throughout, or completely losing their cool. It's so diverse and the VAs did a really good job. It truly helps bring the characters to life.

Visual novels are difficult to get right, because you're telling a story, but also supplying the players with visuals, audio and everything else. If you don't balance it correctly, then your visual novel can very easily flop. With this game, and then other Volumes in the series, it all just feels incredibly balanced.

At face value, it's a silly visual novel about a man and his catgirls making love or what have you, but this was a really pleasant game for various reasons.

Volume 1 focuses primarily on Chocola and Vanilla and their interactions with Kashou (the protagonist) with guest introductions from the other catgirls and characters, whereas Volume 2 focuses primarily on Azuki and Coconut and their interactions with Kashou, with Chocola and Vanilla playing supporting roles and the others playing guest introductions.

We get to learn more about Azuki and Coconut, and honestly...they're both written to be really relatable / understandable on a level that goes more in-depth. Like I said, it might seem like a silly game about catgirls and falling in love with them, but when you've got me getting this emotionally attached to their characters and they way they're written...you've seriously done something really incredible, and I'm not just saying that because I'm weak for catgirls, either.

All in all, Nekopara Volume 2 gets an 11/10 from me, I genuinely think that this game is a masterpiece, there is a reason why it has an overwhelmingly positive response. Obviously, the whole theme of it is not for everyone, but if you are even just a little bit intrigued, I implore you to give it a go. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you encounter. Though, please make sure you play them in order, it'll be a lot better that way.

Nekopara Volume 0 is a lovely little instalment for the series. It takes place just before Volume 1, and only lasts about an hour and a half or so. If you're playing through the entire series, be aware that it's not mandatory for you to play this game, it mostly just exists for additional catgirl content for those who enjoy these games.

The main content of the game is spectating the catgirls in their daily lives at the family home, you are not a protagonist or directly involved, you're just watching. This game introduced the petting feature which allows you to either pet the characters on the head to provoke a positive response (which is what you should be doing) or...touch other places if you're perverse and / or scandalous.

Since this is a short game, I'll honour it with a shorter review. The music, visuals, voice acting and story is very pleasant. NekoWorks puts a lot of effort into their craft and it shows. They've created some adorable characters and a story, that may seem quite silly at face value, but also, that captured the hearts of many including myself.

You really don't have anything to lose other than an hour and a half, so if you're even a little bit intrigued, please, give it a shot! Obviously, the theme and the anime-esque tropes may not be for everyone, but you may end up being pleasantly surprised!

Do yourself a favour and play Volume 1 of Nekopara.

This is the very first game of the series and it really helped set the standard of the future titles. Visual novels are usually dependant on their style, and Volume 1 absolutely nailed it.

One thing that immediately jumps out at you is the music. It. Is. Amazing. Visual novel music just has that certain feel to it, and this game is a perfect representation of that. It's like playing Doki Doki Literature Club for the first time and taking a minute to appreciate the music. It's just so warm and nice, and fits the style of the game so well for some reason. It also has emotional pieces in the game, and those emotional songs are really tender and tug at your heart strings. The music is awesome, and I wish I could see more people appreciating it.

The artwork in this game is also something that immediately jumps out at you. It's just so well made. You can really tell that NekoWorks went all out with how they wanted this game to look. The thing is, the artwork and character sprites are used in future volumes, but you don't get tired of seeing it. I think that this series' artwork is some of the best I've seen, and it's in a visual novel alone. Really amazing stuff.

The voice acting is super good, and very cute. The characters are really sweet and the VAs did such a good job at playing their roles. That's really all I can say, it's just superb.

I have to admit, I saw this game pop into my recommended feed, and it looked interesting, so I made a mental note of it in my head. At the time, all I saw were cute catgirls and thought "I wonder if this will be some strange dating sim", but it turned out to be a really sweet game with a neat story! It's not choice based at all, meaning that you don't have to worry about making any game changing decisions at any point.

At face value, the game is a silly story about a man making love to catgirls, but honestly? Getting to know Chocola and Vanilla and seeing their relationship with the protagonist (Kashou) develop is one of the sweetest things I've seen. This game made me feel emotionally attached and invested in not a lot of time at all, and honestly, I'm happy that I stumbled across it one day.

I will admit, I've well known for instantly getting attached to something assuming it meets everything I'm looking for, and this game was no exception in the slightest. But, I genuinely believe that anyone could get into this game, assuming you don't mind the anime-esque tropes and the whole theme of catgirls, because it's not for everyone obviously.

All in all, Nekopara Volume 1 gets an 11/10 from me. This game helped shape a wonderful concept into the series it is today, and gave me something to pour my passion into. I felt very inspired by this game and it allowed my creativity to get fired up. It's got an overwhelmingly positive response for a reason, and I think that this is a lovely little game that people should consider playing.

Blake's glasses are the strongest thing in this game and you cannot convince me otherwise.
There's also a 7ft tall crazy lady, a fat religious man and the boogie man who doesn't seem to leave you alone.

I first played this game on a few live streams a few years ago, and it has quickly become my favourite horror game to date. I don't know what it is about it, but I think it wraps itself together really nicely. The theme and concept of the game is very unsettling. There is very gruesome imagery and the game isn't afraid to both show off, and go into, certain details that other horror games probably would've glanced over. It's grotesque in nature, and likely will catch you by surprise when you encounter it for the very first time.

The game's soundtrack is mostly comprised of themes of tension and chase themes, and good lord, they definitely succeed in evoking stress and discomfort. The game emphasises to you that you are not a fighter, and that your only option is to run and hide, or die. Knowing that, it gives a sense of urgency as you navigate this horror-filled Asylum in a desperate attempt to steer clear from the clearly insane patients with a lust for your blood. There are however a few sound cues that signal progression and are genuinely very calming / affirming. In your very few moments of respite, the music that accompanies it is very nice. You actually feel rewarded for progression and overcoming your obstacles. Maybe that's just me, but I thought I should mention that.

I think my favourite feature of this game however is that it doesn't rely strictly on jumpscare horror. It plays more on the idea that you are prey, and you are being hunted by predators. A game of cat and mouse. Of course, there are a few jumpscares which are a little bit cheap, but if anything, I find that it makes sure to keep you on your toes and remind you that whatever you just went through isn't the end. There is still much more awaiting you, and you cannot let your guard down. You encounter a few common mutants throughout your Asylum expedition, but there are a few main characters that pose a major threat to you throughout certain areas of the story, each evoking their own sense of fear within you. It's a reminder that you are being followed and are never safe. It really likes to play on your vulnerability, and I think that Outlast executes this concept flawlessly.

The level design is also incredible. That's another thing that I absolutely love about this game. It's very good at making you uncomfortable. It forces you to enter very intimidating looking places in order to progress, even though you could be dropping straight into an area with someone who's ready to chase you down and kill you on the spot. I can handle horror games for the most part, but with this game, I was genuinely uncomfortable when it wanted me to go to new areas. I had to build up the courage to progress as I knew that I would have no choice but to enter an area in which I REALLY didn't want to. The atmosphere of this game is so brutal and unnerving, I love it.

As you are not a fighter, you can approach the game however you see fit. You can either play stealthily, and carefully navigate around enemies and outsmart them, hoping that they don't spot you (which I'm sure is the intended way to play the game), or you can run straight in and do your best to evade and escape their line of sight, which is a much braver approach. No matter what approach you take, there are some really good scares in this game, and when I first played it, the uneasiness and feeling of being chased allowed my adrenaline and heart rate to skyrocket, and I would say that's a horror game done right.

There is quite a lot to the story beneath the surface, but if you're going through the game casually, you can still make out everything that is happening relatively easily. There isn't too much brainpower involved when it comes to deciphering the basics of the story, so you can still follow along and play the game without having to think too hard.

In regards to difficulty, I think that also deserves some commendation. Story Mode is a very casual experience. Enemies are slower, give up on chases quicker, and you take more hits before you die. These sorts of parameters change as you up the difficulty, up to Nightmare, in which enemies are the fastest they can go, pursue chases for longer, and you can only take 2 hits before death, with the exception being one enemy who can hit you once and kill you. If you're really feeling brave however, then the Insane difficulty is for you. The same difficulty as Nightmare, except if you die, you restart the entire game from the beginning. I've completed Insane, and I have to say that it was probably one of the most fun challenges I've set for myself in gaming, and the feeling of accomplishment when I completed it was fantastic. I've considered learning to speed run this game, as I really do love it and appreciate the experience I had with it.

The DLC is also pretty solid. It's the same location with the same sort of experience, however, you're getting a completely different part of the Asylum with even more enemies and scares along the way. I won't speak too much, you should play it and find out for yourself!

I absolutely adore this game and highly recommend giving it a go. You will be in for some quality scares, tension, and a horror experience like never before. 11/10, amazing.

The game is good. The dev appears to be making all the progress he can towards new content for the game. I've had some great games and moments on this game for sure. The only thing that I'd say is that there isn't a whole lot of replayability in terms of the maps and game modes. Once you understand the patterns of the maps and what you need to do, the challenge isn't really there anymore. After a few games, me and my friends can easily complete the maps in not a lot of time at all.

So yeah, the game is fun, good times to be had and is scary the first time you play. But after a while, it's not quite the same.

However, I will NEVER forget the genuine screams of terror when we played in the mansion for the first time.

Phas used to be one of my favourite games. It balanced a tense atmosphere with lots of fun. Even though you could mess about and for the most part get away with it, you would still get scared. The ghost used to be very simple which often made it quite easy to avoid it, and so they've spent lots of time improving the AI to listen out for you...open closet doors where you could be hiding...hunt in the spot it saw/heard you last...etc etc.

I don't think these are inherently bad developments, as it's cool for the AI to get smarter and more adaptable. However, the more realistic the game gets, the more it begins to flush out the fun factor. You can't mess around nearly as much as you have to take the game super seriously to properly identify the ghost type which, by the way, there are way too many now I personally think. Especially with some ghost types having super confusing / awful to play against mechanics. I know that the devs want players to study certain ghost type behaviour in order to identify / rule out other ghosts, but...there is just no incentive to do so. Even as I try to play the game seriously and try as hard as I can, I still can never correctly identify the ghost due to it being super inconsistent and seemingly flaunting traits of other ghosts, not to mention I usually die in the hunts because the ghost is just too smart now.

Building upon that point, it really does feel like you just can't have the same type of fun you used to be able to have anymore. The game is just so difficult and is no longer a casual experience. If you want to identify the ghost, you have to try-hard every match. When you die, you lose ALL of the equipment you personally brought into the match, and making money feels very difficult. I dunno man, I just don't like the game anymore. It's gone from a fun/scary casual experience to a try-hard no-fun sweaty experience. I used to play it quite a lot, but I don't play it at all anymore because of what I've mentioned. My friends have mostly lost interest in the game now as well, which further adds to the fact I have no proper incentive to play it anymore. A huge shame, since this game used to be great.
