I purchased the game day-one for PS4 and played for about 30 hours before losing interest. Even from the beginning, there was a lot to like: the ability to explore a planet, hop in your ship and fly to space and then land on a new (procedurally generated) planet and biome was thrilling. But there wasn't enough to keep me around more than a couple of weeks.

After learning that the game was coming to VR, I snagged it during a sale and largely waited for the 'Beyond' update to drop. I have put well over 100 hours into the game since then. The VR implementation is stellar (pun intended) - I'm playing on a wireless Vive Pro with Index Controllers. My computer is fairly beefy (if a few years old at this point): i7 8700k | 1080ti | 32 gb DDR4.

Anyway, tldr, I pretty much love this game. It's a game where you have to find your own fun, largely, and that fits my play-style perfectly. The addition of VR lets me live in this universe in a way I couldn't before. I recommend this game for VR enthusiasts and anyone looking to explore a melancholy universe full of weird sights.

Edit on 7/22/24: A few years later and (across PS4, Xbox, and PC) I have now put well over 1000 hours into this game. I absolutely love it. I still play it frequently in VR (with a more modern 4080 FE and 13700KF). The game keeps becoming MORE.

It's more gorgeous and more engaging (for exploring the enormous simulated galaxies) than it ever has been. And somehow Hello Games just keeps adding MORE. Without ever charging more.

This game isn't going to be for everyone. You have to be the kind of person who loves making their own fun. For that matter, the 'game' parts of the game (there are way more of them now) are still secondary to the opportunity to just exist in this strange universe. But if you are like me (and that's exactly the kind of experience you are looking for) there is nothing else like No Man's Sky.
