TLDR: it's digital talisman, but now it's updated to fifth edition.

Another well-made boardgame adaptation from Nomad. If you're not a fan of the new 5e rules, you can house rule most of those back to 4e. This is an improvement over the previous version in every way EXCEPT that all the expansions aren't here, which IS a big miss. An expected miss tbh, but a couple of the early expansions would've been nice as there isn't a whole lot to base Talisman. The first 3 expansions (Reaper/Dungeon/Frostmarch) all add much needed variety and are all but core IMO. Still, if you own them on the previous edition, you'll get them here for free as they come. Can't complain about that at all.

ngl, junkies doing 180 headshot noscopes while getting screamed at by 3 different SWAT cops to "put the gun down" gets lame after a while. tactics stop mattering when every contact is a sniper with pinpoint accuracy and instant reaction time.

waited a long time for them to fix the nonsense AI, they never did, just put out DLC. never revisiting.

XCOM for dads and history nerds.

Disregard the reviews regarding "getting hit by things you can't see". Welcome to more realistic warfare: take out the spotters and you won't need to worry about the artillery anymore. Check your corners and clear out anywhere a scout might be hiding. It's not that hard if you're willing to think tactically beyond full-on attack to the objective. I highly recommend turning on the LoS indicators and FoW to help make it more clear what you can and cannot see.

My GOTY for sure. Combines the best of Atlus's two other main franchises (Persona-style calendar and social systems + SMT Press Turn combat) while taking them into a brand new setting, to create something that's new, yet still familiar.

If you like Persona or SMT, you'll enjoy this as well. I only hope the future of this game is a nice post-story DLC/expansion, and not another ridiculous "Complete edition" in a couple years where they add in the stuff they didn't bother putting in the first go around (looking at you Mage Academy and romances).

Just tossing a quick edit on, nominated for 2024 GOTY.

we're so freaking back

(it's a literal straight port but it functions on modern PCs and that's all you could ask for at $10)

credit where credit is due, this pack is a banger

we'll just... put aside the fact that there's zero excuse for Lyra (literally the reigning NXT Women's Champion at release) and Lee not being base game. Hopefully they start to actually keep up with the big names rising up in and coming out of NXT. Every other addition is well-selected and a welcome addition.

Graphics are dogwater and dialogue is cringe, but the game itself is an enjoyable mash-up of Final Fantasy Tactics, Battle Brothers, and Darkest Dungeon 1 (particularly in base-building and company management), and really does scratch a similar itch. If you're into any of those, this is worth giving a shot despite appearances. There's a great game under that rough exterior.
