I really want to like this game, and to a certain extent -- I do. The scenery is beautiful, the artstyle is striking, and I'm in love with the writing. However, this game has so many bugs and technical issues that its really hard to recommend this to other people. Janky physics makes climbing and riding your bike more chores than their worth (These are the main two things that you're always doing btw). Navigating menus and clicking on dialog options is nearly always an uphill battle. Random custom markers keep somehow appearing on my map and I'm 90% sure it's because the game is interpreting my inputs on the menu as clicking on the map. Combined with other minor issues and no way to rebind controls... yeah. It's a very hard sell. I may come back to this game once subsequent patches have been given, but for now, I would recommend either saving your money or waiting for a sale.

Great game, would recommend getting. My only issue is that I fear that one day, I will be deafened by the glorious melodies of the vast. To be reclaimed alongside the toll of the bells, to allow my mind to accept the inevitability of reconciliation. I already feel my thoughts, feelings, memories, sinking to the bottom of the vast ocean. The ocean that will serve as the final destination to Our thoughts, Our feelings, Our memories. Our eyes become many, Our bodies become All, Our wills become gospel, Our intentions become God.

anyway yeah cool game

If you're considering buying this in 2021, this will definitely unlock your nostalgia for the early 2010s.

Gameplay is tight and simple, but this game really shines in its comedic writing. Even some of this games achievements have comedic timing that rivals that of a human person.

Visually and audibly, this game is a 10/10, however I cannot recommend this in good faith just yet. Constant glitches plague a good margin of this game, especially in the tutorial songs where the game does not let you "miss" notes. In fact, the tutorial straight up would not start for me until I restarted the game on my first go 'round.

Even after I beat the tutorial levels, occasional glitches still reared their heads at inopportune times, which can get really frustrating. Combined with some clunky controls for some of the out-of-song sections and menu navigation (why is advancing text bound to both Y and the jump button on a gamepad??) this game is paradoxically both extremely polished and not polished at all. I really want to like this game, but this feels more like a beta than a demo.

Starbound has it's fingers in a lot of different pies, ranging from space exploration, base building, mining, ship + crew customization, rpg mechanics, space station creation, farming, etc. While usually that would lead a game feeling very unfocused, Starbound manages to still feel like a complete package, and still be engaging even after 100+ hours.

That being said, at times it can feel like a lot of these areas of gameplay are underdeveloped/shallow. I still fail to see what the point of space stations are, your crewmates feel more like cardboard cutout decorations than actual assets, even base building can be kind of dull, unless you really care about giving all of your tenants five star rooms to chill in.

With those complaints in mind, I still think Starbound is pretty good all things considered. Lots of stuff to do, very good for listening to podcasts, and if building is your thing you can make some pretty damn nice looking structures.

This game has essentially solidified my opinion that Lucas Pope remains as one of the most criminally underrated game devs out there, even with the cult popularity of Papers Please. Obra Dinn is a work of art, and the amount of love put into this project is apparent on all levels, from visuals, to sound design, to puzzle mechanics. It's a game that you can play 40 times and still somehow learn new things about, although nothing will ever compare to your first ever playthrough.

I only have two complaints.

1) The game is almost discouragingly overwhelming at the start. Due to how the death mechanic works, you end up having to see the story in a pseudo-reverse chronological order. As such, the beginning of the game kind of just drops you into the most intense scene right at the start. Combining this with the initially overwhelming empty book, and the knowledge that you're gonna have to learn the names of the 60 crew members, it can be a lot for a new player.

2) Going back to review old memories is really unnecessarily tedious. Imo, the memories should just be available to view using the book, as you can see a screenshot in the memory in it's corresponding page inside the book anyway. Having to physically go to corpses within corpses eats up a lot of time, and it can make reviewing memories more of a chore than they should be.

The second boss ALONE is worth the sixteen dollars this game is asking for. Do not look up what it is, just buy this game and find out for yourself. You will also immediately tab out of the game to write a positive review for this absolute masterpiece, i can guarantee it

Kind of Superhot, kind of Jet Set Radio. Combat sucks, story sucks, the entire boat level sucks, the first person view sucks, the lack of a reset button sucks, but everything else this game aces. I kind of wish this had stayed in development for another year or so. It's so close to being something genuinely exceptional, but it just barely falls flat.

Would recommend picking up during a sale if this looks like something you'd be into. Otherwise, I'd recommend just watching a speedrun of it to see the game at it's best.
