All the changes from the first seem to be for the worse.

The biggest change is to the level design. The levels are overly large and full of long corridors. That wouldn't be a problem on its own, but the increased amount of guns leads to so many instances of getting shot from someone you couldn't possibly see, even using the (really messed up for some reason) shift camera feature. This is combined with an overuse of windows to make it even more common to get shot at.

This leads to most levels being best handled by baiting guards out with quick movements in and out of rooms to then handle them one by one. It's just boring compared to the fast pace of the first, where going from room to room with a melee weapon was very feasible, and even encouraged. There's less room for improvisation with combat; no more kick a door into a guy then throw this then grab his weapon then stab this guy, and that was the best part of the first!

The switch to having characters with perks instead of multiple masks to choose from reduces the creativity you can have in the levels. You've basically got one or two ways of handling each situation, and it's often dictated that no, you have to play this way, this character only, no options. Many of the interesting characters are also seriously underused; some characters get two levels and then you never play them / with their mechanics again.

On the bright side, it looks fantastic and vibrant, and the soundtrack is second-to-none. Highly recommended!

It's a shame because there's still some great gameplay buried in here, but the rigid design and terrible maps mean I can't see myself replaying this over and over like I did the first.

Some changes for the worse, some for the better, it looks really nice, and at its core is still a really great RTS with unmatched storytelling. I'm happy to say my worry when I heard Gearbox was doing this was misplaced.

I like the orbment system, how it really clearly tells you what's up in the in-game book, and the characters and dialogue are really charming and fun.

When I was a kid I got Strife because I was told I'd like it because I like Doom. And I love Doom a whole lot.

But I have to let you in on a secret about Strife.

The secret is Strife is a bad game
with bad map design
and bad enemies
and bad weapons

Veteran edition is a totally competent rerelease, but sadly it's a rerelease of Strife.

Like i'm not even joking or being sarcastic, this is the finest game I played all year and I played pretty much everything. It's beautiful, it oozes atmosphere at every turn, it humanizes characters that you'd think would be blank slates, the action is intense and there's tons of freedom in how to fight, and it's somehow a game that took a concentration camp level completer with crematoriums and made it not just pure shock, but actually a very well done segment, and the villians are legitimately compelling and people you grow to hate. Like, it's a low bar, I'll admit, but name to me one better videogame at portraying how actually evil the Nazis really were rather than just having them as things to shoot, while also being incredibly fun to shoot.
