Entered this game hoping for a cute experience with a scary twist.

Left with Crippling Depression and an Existential Crisis.

A purple dragon held me hostage and made me play this game.

It's alright, I guess.

I would gladly pay $60 for this.

This is an insanely fun game. A lot of replay value and extremely fun with friends, even this early on in release it feels pretty solid.

It's about time I write this review. And as I'm typing this now I am really glad I found this game. It might not be the same for other people, and their experience may vary. But for the most part I think I can also speak on behalf of the people and friends I have met here. I started this game expecting to just play it as a pastime, but the more worlds I visit the more I get clinged into the game. I was talkative at first, joining a world with several people and seeing if there was someone I can talk to. After a few days I came across Cafe Leblanc. VRchat allows people to make their own worlds and most of them put their favorite worlds from different games into this game. And Cafe Leblanc was one of them. I met my first friend there, was pretty chill, the cafe setting and the way we talk to each other. It feels different. You can communicate via speech, or by drawing using pens. There's no in-game chat system yet but there are worlds that allow you to chat (Tell your world, I think). I started out as a desktop user and that's one of the best things about this game. Being able to communicate with VR people and other Desktop users is really nice. During that time in the cafe we roleplayed as staff for the next several weeks... Then we got visitors, several of them becoming my best friends till today. Then a month happened and VRchat has been having connection issues, which as of now is stable. I visited another world and marked it as another one of the worlds I'll mainly visit, that was CN Village Yae. It was mostly populated by chinese people, but it wasn't too hard getting along with them, especially the world creator. I was going through a rough part of my life and these guys were really kind to me, It just goes to show you the no matter what the distance is, people understand what you're going through and is willing to help. A stranger from across the sea cheering you up despite not knowing you too well is really touching. After that, though, I met a few new friends who I'd call close friends. They helped me a lot in growing as a person and I owe them for pulling me out of depression. Give or take, there isn't too much of a language barrier in this game. There are a lot of worlds you can join, and whenever I visit some worlds I get really emotional seeing how far I've come. In a span of 6 months I was able to become a part of a welcoming community, become more confident, and overcoming the depression that has loomed me for years. I was able to get VR, watch movies with friends together, have a sleepover and sleep in VR. There are amusement parks, concerts, game worlds, avatar worlds, cafes, bars, sleep rooms, hangout rooms, theatres, etc. There's just so much to do in this game as long as you meet the right people to spend your time with. As of now I have 230+ friends I am thankful for. I see them differently, this game removes the barriers from your monitors and let's you see these avatars as real people (Which they are). You can be who you want, befriend who you want, and spend the time however you want. Be it for malicious or pure heartedness intent, do what you want, and your choice might end up in you meeting several new friends that will be there alongside you throughout the ride. And now for my general pros and cons.

Pros

  • Variation in world selection, all community made and updated everyday.
  • VR and Desktop friendly. Works on various configurations and different headset brands (Oculus, HTC, Windows MR).
  • Updates being put out frequently as of recently.
  • Responsive staff, you can reach out to them via discord and suggest features via their canny.io
  • Lots of things you can do, such as watching video links, riding amusement park rides, roleplay, singing, listening to music, etc.
  • Really amazing community, if you know where to look, it shouldn't be too hard to find a nice fellow willing to take you around for a tour.

Cons

  • CPU Intensive game, it is run on the Unity engine... so keep that in mind as well. Especially since this game has no form of graphics options except for the launcher and SteamVR's Manual Resolution slider.
  • There are reports of hackers in the game, also there are people who use shock avatars and NSFW avatars in public. So take caution in joining public instances. Security is also an issue.
  • There's no easy way to make your own avatar. Some people are fine with this (me included), but for others who just want to make one without spending to much time, it's easy to learn, but only if you're willing to put some time into it. (You'll need blender and Unity).
  • One of its pros is also a con, there's a lot of people to meet here, but most of them aren't exactly welcoming. A lot of toxicity and negativity also exists, so don't be surprised.

VRchat is my second home, and I have a really caring group of friends I can call my family. So I hope your experience is the same, there's so much fun to do and so much worlds to explore if you expand your horizons.

See you in the metaverse.

I haven't played much. But I am willing to invest more time into this. It gives me a sense of nostalgia back when me and my sister used to play Koi-koi in our garden back in Kyoto. The music in this game is outstanding and feels relaxing. The art direction is beautiful, and the presentation of the classical card game that I know and love is made even better. Excellent work, Zoo!
