From the original creators of "Fallout" comes "Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines", one of the richest immersive RPG's of all time. If you’re looking for a game that has a similar playstyle of Fallout and the Elder Scrolls then this game is for you, prepare to be BLOWN AWAY by compelling atmosphere, story, writing, characters, voice acting, RPG elements and gameplay features that are far more rewarding than any game in its era and better than most RPG's you’ve probably played up until now

STORY
You’re turned into a Vampire by mistake and are thrown into a secret vampire society named the Masquerade. You then become the errand boy for everyone since you’re new and are trying to learn how everything works. The game revolves around an ancient sarcophagus and the mystery on retrieving it for the “Prince” of LA with twists and turns about whats in it. Like every other RPG, this game has multiple factions and endings. What you do is up to you, but you have to find that sarcophagus. Expect a lot of shock and awe

DESIGN
Every little set piece in this game is rich and fascinating. Besides the story, each character is uniquely designed and very lively, the voice actors also do a superb job in making the characters feel like they’re real people and care about what’s going on with you or in their lives. Compared to most games in 2004 and even some games now, it has the some of the BEST voice acting you will ever see in any game. In most games, I want to go through the dialogue options to get to the game but in this one you WANT to read and hear everything, you always have a reason to come back or want more, this makes Bloodlines one of richest RPGs to exist. When it comes to the world, instead of an open world experience, its divided into 4 hubs you unlock over time. Each with its own unique atmosphere, side quests and characters that make it all memorable. Side quests are also very diverse and noteworthy. None of them are bland or repetitive, and all of them have references to horror and cult classics films. Beginning to end, it took me 60 hours to completely finish after exploring every area and completing every side quest, this game is not short like everyone makes it out to be, so give it time. Also, the SOUNDTRACK IS FIRE

RPG ELEMENTS
Bloodlines introduces 7 vampire clans to choose from, each with its own special powers and attributes. After you choose your clan, you’re given a character sheet where you can change or upgrade your character to your playstyle. I for example, chose to play as a Toreador who are famous for their manipulation, so I raised my charisma and wits stats which gave me more dialogue trees and changed my overall game. Things like lockpicking and terminals also exist, and just like "Fallout" you’re going to need to raise these stats to enter secret areas, these can also be mandatory for some quests. Bloodlines also introduces “Humanity” which plays as a Karma system, based on your decisions the less humanity you have the less dialogue options you will have and more murderous you will have to be, this can result in a “Masquerade violation” and too many of those grants you a permanent death. Story wise, you are given many options and every decision you make reflects and can alter the story with a total of 5 different endings to the game, so if you want the full experience I recommend not playing as a Malkavian or Nosferatu. Malkavian dialogue trees are wild and confusing and as a Nosferatu, you will spend time in the sewers or hiding from humankind as this is a violation to the Masquerade, this makes the game not fully explorabe so unless you’re doing a stealth playthrough and know your way around everything I wouldn't recommend it. Either way, the replayability is high and each clan feels like a whole NEW experience as dialogue and gameplay changes.

COMBAT/OPTIMIZATION
One of the highest criticisms of this game is its combat system and its bugs, it can be very janky at times and the gunplay has aged very poorly. There are also times when you can get stuck on doors or objects and can’t access things that are needed to progress. Bloodlines was made on a very early version of the Source Engine and this has resulted in many bugs BUT this is nothing compared to HOW BAD AND JANKY Bethesda’s games can be so I wasn’t bothered, Bloodlines is very well optimized and never crashes, the bugs are also very minor. I beat the entire game without using a single command console cheat or being stuck due to these bugs or glitches thanks to the “Unofficial Patch”. This fixed widescreen, bugs and also added cut content (if you’d like) Its very EASY to install and nothing confusing to add to the game. Combat on the other hand feels like it was made to be “Hack N slash” based, Guns feel useless but are mandatory second half of the game and the Source Engine doesn’t make these feel stabilized to work, even humans are bullet sponges and headshots have no effect, so melee is your best option so expect to be playing in 3rd person a lot when you’re not exploring

FINAL VERDICT
Another troubled and rushed game in development that turned out to be a cult classic and RPG masterpiece. New Vegas isn’t alone

9.5/10
