Early Access Review
In the east, a hooded woman slips into a rural farming village, introducing herself with bright smiles and ill intentions. Her honeyed words fall easy on unguarded ears. In the west, a lithe, pale man on horseback wails in the night as a hero and her guardian move through the night. At first they find it unworrying, if odd, but it's not long before they begin seeing visions of the ghastly rider in their dreams, clawing away at their sanity. Eventually they confront the pale rider, ready to slay him to cease this mad pursuit - but the man only smiles, for his death is only the beginning of their nightmare. In the south, a mighty orc warlord bearing the head of a manticore and the previous tribe leader brings the last of his people to heel, before turning bloodthirsty eyes to the north. The chosen one rides, they see the connecting threads, they feel fate bidding them fulfill the prophecy and stop the grand designs of their dark god. You are almost free. Humanity is almost doomed.

SUMMARY: A tentative endorsement.

This is a tough one for me, I'm actually greatly enamored of most all the pieces of this game, but was shocked when I had managed my first victory--the game is dreadfully short. Several mechanics within the game lead me to believe this was a long-haul, that I was to manage the tribe for a considerable time. While it was no 5-minute pump n' dump, it left a sour taste in my mouth as it felt as though so many preparations had been for naught. If you're a big fan of strategy/sims, this may scratch that itch, but it left me hungry for a more fleshed out experience.

What to say about this game...

Well, if you're a fan of SRPG's, and hunting for one with roguelike elements, this may be right up your alley. It can be brutally difficult and unfair, even, at times. It's hard to get used to, but you'll have more fun if you lean into your losses instead of rage-quitting or reloading to have a perfect battle.

The Good:
- Satisfying tactical combat
- A variety of enemies that (generally) require different approaches
- High amount of character builds
- Interesting world

The Bad:
- Relatively small, content wise (though the roguelike aspects keep things pretty fresh)
- The look of pawns can feel simplistic
- Combat can feel incredibly RNG dependent at times (both with starting terrain and actual combat rolls)
- Some character perks quite visibly inferior

If you're asking for a reccomendation? Look to the play-time, I've certainly got my enjoyment out of it. Watch out for Vamp- excuse me, Necrosavants.

Also, almost 300 hours and the only lindwurm I managed to find was swiftly murdered by a noble house. *sob*

Got a yearning to command a space-ship with a rag-tag group of aliens you assemble yourself?

Got a need to get into gunfights with an entire fleet's worth of ships?

Feeling a hankering for edge-of-your-seat combat where you try to perfectly time that missile and laser salvo to puncture the shields of a superior foe?

Well, good luck, Captain. You're going to need it.

Beating the game completely took relatively little time (I've unlocked what appears to be the best ship in the game, and almost completely upgraded all systems), but short is sweet for the life of a bounty-hunting hard country space-farer.

The soundtrack is killer -- and the ability to add your own to the list of amazing tracks is another sweet bonus. I personally added the cowboy bebop soundtrack to the list because it all just fits too well. The combat isn't complicated, but is satisfying to pull off, and you do have tools at your disposal to take down larger, better equipped enemies if you're clever.

Honestly, the only place this game doesn't excel, in my opinion, is it's exploration factor. While still plenty large, being limited to a 2D plane was an unfortunate necessity.

Given a do-over, I would definitely buy this game again.
