Honestly I wouldn't have it any other way, if you like the original series you'll like this.

Gameplay is basic but kinda fun, especially with friends.

Story has some really good ideas especially at the end of the game but the execution is just atrocious, so its kinda hard to care let alone recommend. Its a shame because I think I would have really enjoyed the story if they hadn't fumbled it so badly.

Jack is really funny though, so you can at least get a giggle out of it.

Not a bad game, not a great game, really kinda just meh. Lot of missed potential.

Hopoo sold the game to Gearbox and they retroactively broke everything.
Don't buy Hopoo games, they might get bored of developing them and sell them off to the devil instead.

Downpatch your game and it might still be playable, but buy it on ♥♥♥ or something, don't give Gearbox your money.

Don't buy Hopoo games.

Fantastic puzzle game if you like turn based strategy games, really just clicks.
Consistently adds fun new powers and is really satisfying when you figure out the best turn.

Story isn't amazing or anything but it's solid and all the characters and very likeable, by the end I actually did really care about every squad member especially Vesker, Jen, and SPOILER (the dog).

Big recommend, peak bite sized indie game gold.

The movement, art style and animation, sound design, and general gameplay is all fantastic.

The main problem is that the checkpoint system isn't great so if you get stuck somewhere you end up having to do the same things over and over like a mini Jump King which is really not fun.

There's also an issue with how the checkpoint/shortcut system works. What made me stop playing was getting into a large temple section, getting to a checkpoint halfway through before the temple had me double back on myself but above the earlier section. I then unlocked a shortcut that would allow me to skip from a very early part of the temple to a very late one. Then I died. Despite unlocking that shortcut to a far earlier part of the level I was stuck where the checkpoint is. I couldn't go backward because the whole section before it is one way, and there's no fast travel or warp system aside from going back to your last checkpoint which I just respawned at. Feels pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to unlock a shortcut only for it to be ♥♥♥♥♥♥' useless and make you do a whole section over again.

Really though, if this was just one incident it wouldn't be the end of the world, the problem is that its a constant thing. Do a bunch of platforming, get to a jump that's either precise or involves creative movement you haven't done forever, get punished for trying to learn the new movement by having to repeat the same ♥♥♥♥ over and over so you can try it again.

Could also use some sorta map, or at least a tracker for how many fish you have left to get and generally where you should go to get them. Feel like if I did play longer I'd end up visiting all the obvious big land marks and then stop playing before I got all the fish because I'd miss a couple and have no idea where.

So basically: There's a good game here, but it needs far more quality of life if they're going to go this open world exploration route. More checkpoints, a button to warp back to the start of a temple/dungeon area (maybe you want to use a shortcut like my example, maybe you just hate this are and want to leave and come back), a fish finder, maybe a fast travel system. There's a LOT of potential here so hopefully they can turn things around for the full game.

This isn't a review about the servers being down, that'll be fixed soon enough and isn't really a reason to stay away, it's just a little frustrating.

What is a reason to stay away for now: The leveling process and the fact that it's always online, without the ability to play and level up offline.

The Infamy leveling, meaning your character's level not your weapons, is tied to what is effectively just a big list of achievements. This sucks for anyone looking to play a specific build for any real amount of time. I want to play shotgun + ammo funnel but after getting the early achievements out of the way for that gun I am consistently making no infamy progress at all with each heist I complete. This sucks and forces me to use guns I hate like the Uzi if I want more skill points to put toward the build I actually want to play at all.

The lack of solo play is an issue for multiple reasons. Obviously the sever issues right now are a problem that could have been avoided but the real annoyance is waiting on matchmaking even when it's working when I'm trying to solo stealth. I hate that even if I'm only trying to play alone I have to sit around while their matchmaking server thinks really hard about putting me in a lobby alone for some reason.
I also hate that if I lose internet connection I just can't play the game at all, while I could happily play Payday 2 without a connection at all. Considering how ♥♥♥♥ Charter/Spectrum is, I'm really not looking forward to getting kicked out of a long stealth mission at 2AM when they decided to push some garbage change to production and knock me offline.

Hopefully both of these issues will be addressed in future, but honestly for now I'd wait and maybe just play a bit of Payday 2 again. The actually moving and shooting feels great but everything surrounding it is a downgrade. I expect once they hopefully cave to requests for an offline mode and leveling is reworked the game will be great, and hopefully I can come back and change my review. For now I can't really recommend.

Game's fantastic especially for the price. If you're on the fence I say buy it, you'll probably like it!

Think DMC crossed with Metal Hellsinger (and a dash of Space Channel 5 of all things!) gameplay wise, and Jet Set Radio mixed with Guilt Gear Strive (and a dash of Spiderverse) art style/animation wise. It all blends beautifully into a fantastic rhythm/action game that looks beautiful while you play it. I think my one complaint gameplay wise is the lack of a lock-on for targeting down specific enemies, but other than that it nailed it.

Story is nothing incredible to write home about and things can feel a little cringy at times, especially early on, but they do a surprisingly good job at keeping things more like say Jak and Daxter or Spyro than Borderlands or Forspoken, and while I can't say I LOVE most of the characters I do at least like 'em!
