The game is "okay".

You could buy it if it's on super sale or something, I wouldn't recommend at full price.

The biggest issue is the bugs and crashes. The game has not received fixes or patch in years.
There is some equipment combos that will make the game hang indefinitely, others will crash to desktop.

The idea is nice, and I was excited to mess with it, but after 10hrs I'm done restarting the day every other time I try to enter a new contract.
Also, the UI navigation isn't intuitive but its fairly simple so its easy to get around.

This has a decent amount of potential. Right now, I'd wait for a sale to pick it up. I took my time and played with rebuilding my ship a few times and still finished the game in 30hrs.

It currently lacks depth, its mostly going from one area to another while you look for caves or items.
It does start to get stale towards the end, but this is early access so I expect to see lots more stuff in the future

The building is simple but fun, as well as the concept. As you progress, micro management becomes easier and easier, but its never very difficult.

I really hope they add a creative mode, It can be tedious to play with different layouts for your city.

Overall, I'm glad i got but but $27 is a little steep in its current state, and again this is EA, games only been out for a few days.

Poor interface design.
Abandoned game that wants you to pay for every single table top, or buy bundles for over $100.

Buggy and glitchy.

Not worth the drive space.

If you're unsure, stay away from Pax-Pay™.

Pay-2-win with future sub costs.
There is potential in this game, but that's all there is.
It is all future hopes and promises.
Currently, the actual game play loop is gathering, fail crafting, gathering add 3 walls to your house and gather some more.

The amount of materials required and the man hours needed for crafting and refining are ridiculous, but they HAVE to keep it that way or there's no game anymore.

The purchase tier model is p2w, no matter how you slice it, in a game where the entire point is building up a base and city, having room for multiple refiners and in the future gardens and farm animals, pricing 4 plots at $100 is the definition of p2w. One plot isn't enough room to hold all the stations and a medium house. You're capped to 3 floors high(including the roof) so building up isn't a fix for limited space.

Like many, I was really excited for this game and the prospect of a sandbox mmo. Time will tell if they keep their promises.
As of today on its release, its in a worse state than the alpha2 test.
Cant place plots, items or craft.
The rubber banding has made it truly unplayable. I understand launch day being shaky, but the early access was sold via pre-orders. They HAD to have a good idea of how many players they'd have, steam charts shows it capped at 10.3k, in a game where we're supposedly going to have ""THOUSANDS of players per shard""

For now, I'd avoid it unless you have time and friends you'll be playing with.

First steam game I've refunded.

I can see what they're trying to do and maybe it'll be that game some day but right now this is an alpha build at best.
The UI is far too clunky some of the building aspects are tedious for no reason and its not as engaging as it should be.

You might be better off waiting for a few big patches and seeing where the game is before picking this up.

Lift the Shroud, buy the game!

Summary:
Great game at a great price that's worth your time and money.

With Enshrouded you get most of what you expect from a survival open world base builder with surprisingly good combat with the caveat that the enemy AI is still lacking.
I would say the biggest thing this game lacks is the feeling of danger you find in a game like Valheim, even early on the risk feels low and never really picks up.
The combat itself however and the animations are amazing and fun. Its very fluid. There is a few quirks but overall it is really well done. The Building is still missing a few key features but what is there is allows for quite a bit of creativity and customization you cant get in other building games.

h3] Visuals [/h3]
The game looks amazing, the world could use a few more critter spawns but the world doesn't feel empty. The biome diversity is well done. Even just hanging out base building I'm constantly noticing how beautiful the scenery is.

Open World
Exploring the world is is fairly fun. I do think the shroud keeps your early exploration more narrowed, but it expands as you complete the game. My biggest complaint overall is being out in the world isn't dangerous really ever, you have to go to certain areas to put yourself into danger. I'd like to see more night time creeps or random encounters with enemies.
The Glider and Grapple really add to the fun of exploring, however the grapple is very under utilized, only really being of use inside POI's and dungeons. The Glider and its upgrades give you a birds eye view of the world as you leap from the high towers or your sky base.

Crafting
Crafting is intuitive and doesn't feel overly burdensome. Many items are locked behind progress or unlocking of NPC base companions that happen naturally as you explore and complete the games story line. There is a decent amount of items, weapon and armor you can craft. Building from chests is an option once you unlock magic chests. The storage system is really well done. You don't feel like you're being griefed by your inventory non-stop like you can in other games.
The furniture you can craft has already been expanded and it looks great.

Base Building
The base building is my favorite part of this style of game and Enshrouded did a really good job with a few caveats.

  • Firstly, there is a decent selection of textures to choose from. One of the more unique things about these textures is that each side of a block is different, so the floor/top has a different look than the side or bottom. This really helps keep your base from feeling like you just copied/pasted 1000 of the same brick.

  • Another unique feature is that you can break a part of a wall/floor tile and replace just the broken portion with a different style block! This can help create some really unique looking builds and styles.

  • Blocks are highly customize-able. You can place entire walls or floors or, a edit single blocks at a time!

  • When multiple blocks are joined, instead of just "stacking" tiles will blend into the surrounding building. This really helps accent doorways and windows.

  • You can create your own obstacle course with the use of the grapple anchors!

  • Roofing tile variation is lacking, with only 4 or 5 options currently that look similar.

  • Landscaping is amazing in this game. have never had the world reset or put dirt back in places I've excavated inside my base, the base areas is ENORMOUS and it goes in every direction (skyward and below the ground). I have a save where I've excavated the inside of a mountain. The tools for replacing rock/dirt work well. I do wish there was a simple hold down to transform option, but currently its tiles or the hoe.

My two complaints about building are the Hoe and inability to rotate blocks at an angle.
The hoe does work but it can be a little difficult to get things just right.
The blocks/tiles on an angle isn't a deal breaker, but it severely limits build options.

Gearing/Armor
They did a great job with the skins for weapons and armor. There are multiple unique sets aimed at different builds.
Instead of "one and done" items can be farmed for a higher level one, but in later game this can get tedious and feel somewhat pointless.

Combat
The way your character moves through the world is smooth and fluid. I love some of the special abilities you get for combat. The combat itself feels decent with dodge. Blocking is awkward and I still haven't mastered it.
The enemy AI is lacking, its not terrible but its not as amazing as the rest of the game. Combat can feel trivial too often though, especially in groups.

Story line/Lore
The story is decent so far, its still unfinished in EA. I will say the story line takes a backseat to everything else about the game though.

Overall, I highly recommend picking up Enshrouded. It feels more like a full release than early access and if this is what they have so far with a company that only employees 50 people, I can't imagine what 1.0 is going to look like.
They recently added dungeons and they are MASSIVE!

Updating review.

Since release the developer has addressed nearly every issue I had with the game. The game still isn't perfect but is a nice spin on the genre and looks beautiful. I think most people will get their moneys worth out of this game.

Probably not worth your time if you're just starting out...

I've been playing off and on for almost 10 years the bots are out of control and they've almost completely eliminated support for SHK.

Bots
The bots are out of control, In the last 2 years I think they did one wave of bans, but its mostly alt accounts so the actual cheaters just make new ones and start up again. For a new player if you're surrounded by botters it can greatly hinder your ability to progress quickly.

Pay To Win
The game is p2w in many regards. Players spending money can easily wipe you off the map, get out ahead on new worlds and sway global conflicts if they have a few players spending real money on card packs.
You can play for free, however it will take you years(literally) to finish research and you wont survive in PVP
For offline action, a premium toke (Subscription) is required.

Not Noob Friendly
It is fairly hard to integrate into the community at this point as well if you're a newer player.
You can reach out and meet a few individuals, but do not expect real assistance.
Furthermore, because of the age of the game most online resources are either outdated or deleted making navigating the game as a new player fairly difficult at times.

Slow/No support
They shut down their email for SHK, there is no way to contact them now for players boting or when your premium token (Subscription) doesn't work right.

I had an issue come up multiple times with my subscription being used, but the bonus it provided while offline wasn't functioning. It took nearly 2 months of emails to get a response and it as a copy/paste from their forums and didn't actually address my issue.

Overall, I would suggest staying away unless you already have played in the past or are coming back to resurrect your villages. The time/money/effort will not yield a payoff for 95% of players.
