Get ready to wait around for questionable controls, snail-pace movement, middling music, and a lack of story. Some of the answers to the puzzles are the most unintuitive solutions I've seen in a point-and-click.

Quick note: Don't watch the trailer. Don't watch a review. This game must be experienced firsthand; anything else would be a disservice to yourself and to RiME. Spoil as little as possible for yourself.

Original review: Unplayable. I'd really like to play this game, it looks beautiful. But I've got slightly above the recommended specs, and turning down the graphics gets me... 24 fps. That would be okay, but there's something about the extremely unstable fps and the fov that just give me a massive headache, which means I can't enjoy what seems to be an absolutely amazing game.

This is the first time since seven years ago when I built this PC that I've needed to overclock my GPU to play a game.

Update Mar 2020: Even with a 1080ti, the game still stutters and crashes. Also, the gameplay is really, really slow. It might be beautiful, but I'm not sure it's worth my time.

Update April 2020: Welp, this game has THOROUGHLY redeemed itself. Seems like the one crash was a fluke, because the rest of the game has been relatively smooth, although still with some occasional frame drops. But now that I've played through the whole thing, I can easily forgive everything except the fact that those on less-capable hardware (The recommended specs listed, an R9 280x, are not enough to play this game at all). It's a shame, because everyone *should* have the chance to play this game, regardless of the hardware they run. It's truly a beautiful experience. Even the backtracking that I was annoyed with earlier was mostly a fluke as well. The devs really put some thought into what the player experiences.

I would be doing a total disservice to this game if I tried to actually explain it, but typically a review is meant to tell you whether you should buy the game or not. The answer is not unequivocally "yes." But this game is not for everybody in the same way that any other game is not for everybody. It's just that "Zelda/Tomb Raider Reboot but prettier and with a more touching and more personal story" just isn't doing this game justice.

Let me put it this way:

The Witcher makes you fight.

Nier Automata makes you think.

This game makes you feel.

(The Witness makes you bored).

...

Well, let's say you already knew that. You know you're getting an emotional story mixed in with some puzzles and some absolutely beautiful scenery. I'm sorry that I don't have much to compare this game to. Every other game that I can think of just hits different. This game is meditative. There's no fighting. There's next to no action. Its pacing is most similar to the Tomb Raider reboots, but TR_r feels absolutely empty by comparison. I can't remember the last time I played a game where the story felt this fulfulling, but I can't actually explain why without totally ruining the game for you.

This game is just plain awesome. It's arcade combined with platformer combined with combat combined with awesome combined with more awesome. Love the art design, gives the game a "fun" and not too serious tone, which I appreciate.

Didn't quite like the controls at first, but once you've changed them to your liking, it's a fun game. It really is more of a controller-optimized game, so if you've got a gamepad, you're in business.

Even though I haven't finished the game, I'd love to see some extra content in the future, such as community maps, a versus/online multiplayer mode, etc.
