Fun little indie game with a surprising amount of items & build diversity. The art style is cool, I'm always a sucker for pixel art, and the music is surprisingly good. It plays kinda like an aRPG/soulslike (heavy focus on weapon-feel, and it is difficult at times), but it feels pretty unique - there's no standard "leveling system". Your character doesn't level up - it's heavily gear-focused. That being said, there is definitely an overarching sense of progression - you're constantly unlocking/finding newer and better weapons/gear, plus you'll get a steady drip-feed of "Embers", which function like Titanite from the Souls games, allowing you to upgrade your weapons/armor/runes to make their effects/damage stronger.

I have a fairly big complaint though - once you start to actually get a build going, the lag is absolutely atrocious, and you'll hit the point where you're actively nerfing your build in order to play the game above single-digit fps. The build I'm currently doing isn't even that good or well-optimized, but when I cast everything on a group of enemies, my fps literally tanks to anywhere from 5 - 7 fps. This shouldn't really need to be said, but for the sake of clarity - I have a top-end PC. I can (and have, many times) played uberlag eye-ruining builds in Path of Exile, and I get better fps doing that in a much more graphically-intensive game (which has a trash-tier game engine btw) than I do in this pixel graphics indie game.

I hate to sit here and dump on this game, the creator did an amazing job, and it's super, super enjoyable, and if he figures out a way to fix, or at the very least reduce the stuttering/fps lag, I'd have zero complaints.

I was enjoying this but it just hit a point where I was sweeping up the 100th pile of literal pixelated poop from one of my followers that I started questioning my life decisions and stopped playing. "hmm what does our game need? Oh, I got it! We need the poopoo and peepee from le Binding of le Isaac, le funny reddit poopie jokes haha xD".

If you're into reddit-tier humor I guess it's cool.

Eh. The combat is awesome, improving on essentially everything from the first game's combat system, but not including the town progression was, in my opinion, a huge mistake. That was the best part of the first game. Yeah yeah "we set out to make a new, different game blah blah" - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Also, I've probably put in 100+ reports for this but for the love of Todd - LET ME SELL ITEMS I DON'T NEED AT THE TAVERN. Trashing items DOESN'T FEEL GOOD, DEVS. I get it - the game is le difficult/unfair/whatever. I'm not asking for a trillion gold per item here - even one (1) singular piece of currency for my item if I make it to an inn makes the player feel good. Wouldn't you like it if every once in a while during this grueling adventure, that your playerbase feels good???

Final complaint - it isn't really a good look when you release a game as Early Access, then basically the moment it leaves early access there's like 14 DLC packs I have to pay for (with another on the way). So the time spent in Early Access was primarily to start working on future DLCs, instead of the game itself? Kinda weak.

I still love the game for the graphics and combat, but yea get it on sale.

Early Access Review
Any game that blatantly gives Nintendo's legal team the middle finger is a massive win in my book.

It's essentially a beta version of Final Fantasy TicTacs. It's good. It isn't just a graphics update either (I mean, the graphics are basically the same but whatever) - stuff is streamlined.

That being said, charging $50 for this is completely absurd. This is basically a PSP game, Square. Come on.

Buy it on sale.

It's a love-letter to classic NES-era JRPGs. The Dev/studio behind this game is extremely nice and responsive on the discussion forums here, which is really cool to see. The graphics are great, especially the world map; it really feels like you're sitting in front of an NES game.
I will say this early - that this game is not difficult - if that's what you're looking for, maybe check out Crystal Project. This game is a callback to the classics, will give you boss tips at save points if you ask for them, etc. It's more about the feel/nostalgia, much less about being super challenging. Not everything has to be Dark Souls/Bloodborne/[Current Popular Difficult Game], I'm fine with this.
There aren't random encounters - it's similar to Earthbound where you see enemies on the map, and can avoid them if you want. Additionally, because you're in less fights than the average NES/SNES JRPG, the fights you do get in are more impactful - debuffs/buffs matter, you have to actually think a bit instead of just mashing "Attack".
The game is full of callbacks and references to other classics - it's never in-your-face about it, but I caught references to FF1, Earthbound, FF6, Chrono Trigger, and several others during my playthrough. The dev clearly has played classic JRPGs a lot and it shows.
The only complaints I have, and they're minor, is that there is no instant text dialogue option (I know there's a thousand requests for this already Mr. Dev, I'm sorry to bring it up again). I was ok with it at first, but towards the end of the game it got a bit annoying. I'm a pretty fast reader, so it might've bothered me more than it would others. Which plays into my other (minor) complaint - I think a few of the story cutscenes go on a bit too long and could be shaved down/be more concise. The issue is - as I type this, I'm not sure if they really need to be shaved down that much, or if it's because the text speed is slow that it ended up bothering me a bit.

Anyway, minor complaints aside, this is a really cool game. Worth the money.

*Story* - 2/10

*Graphics* - Anime/10

*Music* - Hype/10

*Gameplay* - Intense/10

*Endgame Content* - Final Fantasy X/10

*Will your Steam friends judge you for playing this *- If your friends enjoy Fantasy Football or Call of Duty, probably/10

Amount of different characters - 22/10, but if you don't main Siegfried you're cringe.

I will take no further questions on my scoring system.

Super good ARPG. Honestly I don't think the trailers and images on the Steam store page do this game enough justice - I assumed this would be some little indie co-op RPG that would provide an experience similar to the old Gauntlet Legends games; entertaining, but not super deep or long (that's what she said). This game is absolutely the opposite of that - it has huge skill trees, a massive amount of gear, mastery points to continue to power your character up after you hit the level cap (similar to Paragon Points in Diablo III, but way, way more interesting, way more options, etc.).

To anyone who enjoys ARPGs - this game is phenomenal, interesting, has very high replayability, has local co-op, and even at full price, it's 100% worth it. The ONLY negative thing I can think to say about it (and this isn't even the game's fault), is that it is a lesser known ARPG, and it can be difficult to find build guides for the current patch. If you love creating your own custom builds, this isn't an issue at all - but if you prefer following a guide for your character build in these types of games, it can be kinda difficult to find exactly what you're trying to do with the character. There are really good builds out there, don't get me wrong (Steam Guides page for this game has several good ones), but we aren't talking about the amount of guides you'd find for Path of Exile, Diablo 3/4, etc.

TL;DR - Buy it, the dev deserves it. One dude essentially made this entire thing (which is mind-boggling given the amount of content).

Sleeper hit. Combat & customization are surprisingly good.

Also if you play it entirely in Japanese you'll never realize how cringe most of the story is.
