I'm writing this review after 170 hours of game time. within 5 weeks.
That should say alot. but there's more to this story then would meet the eye.
So first off, I may be a little biased towards this game, as I love it! But it's NOT a perfect game.
That said, let's get to the PROs:-
1. Exploration, The vast openness of the world is great, in each of the zones is vast and awe inspiring, from when you first spawn on an island and look around, it can feel a little daunting, there's alot to learn, more than you might first recognise
2. Controls, this may sound a little obvious, but the controls are easy, simple, and effective, plus with a little initiative, you can map the controls to a gamepad, so you can use whichever method you prefer, however that said, I personally feel the game pad controls can be limiting
3. Seemless Gameplay, This ones a little tricky, as the gameplay is seemless, there aren't any loading screens. (save for if you die or first load into the game) No this may not seem like that important of a "pro" for the game, but this lack of interuptions during your play time vastly improves the feeling of vastness and immersion, it also adds to the exploration, which is, IMHO, one of the most important parts to the game
4. Game Mechanics, this ones big, with a myriad of materials and item schematics you can find for everything in the game, from swivel turrets and ship cannons, to engines and wings, every material has different effects on every aspect of an items stats, so you need to research, try out different combinations, and see what works for just about everything you're going to craft
5. Skyships! If you aren't sold on the idea already, personally, I think you're crazy, but let me try to convince you, when you first start, you're given 5 "default" ship schematics, but you aren't limited to building those 5 exact ships and waiting to find more ship frames, instead, you adjust, alter, edit, the frames to create whatever design of ship you desire! Because of that simple fact, you'll never find two ships designed the same. I've spent a fair few hours discussing with fellow flyers design advantages and flaws of many a different skyship design. and it's always fun to take out that new beauty of a skyship for a test flight to see what she's capable of!
6. Lore, although the lore of the game isn't incredible prevalent, it IS there, and you can spend hours finding and reading it all in your lore journal, it's some deep stuff, and worth a read
7. The Island Builder, what's that? you can build islands you say? well yes! you get a copy of the Worlds Adrift: Island Creator when you purchase the game, now what's the purpose of thise? simple, you create islands and submit them to Bossa and there's a high chance they may end up in the game! as a matter of fact, 100% of the islands in the game are community made, by people like you and me, using said Island Creator program! you probably heard it in other reviews and the trailers but this is a community based MMO, so all the islands, and alot of ideas come from us! and we need to get involved to make the game better.
8. The Community, this one ties in with points 6 & 7, but what the community has done with the lore with the islands they create, the ideas that are put to the developers, and the kinds souls that help out the newer players with better schematics and trading materials. How the community helps one another is pretty great.
9. Art Style, This one is just a personal reason, but the stylised graphics of the game work perfectly for the games aesthetic, it shows the beauty of the world, but also helps with the funny moments when things go crazy
10. Bossa, Bossa (the developers of Worlds Adrift) are putting in the work, as of the 5 weeks I've been playing there have been 2 major updates, and lots of new content, as well as tweeks to current content to keep things more fresh.
11. Weather Walls, another gamplay element that is always fun, weather walls are walls of seriously adverse weather (duh!) which as of writing this review are split into 3 dificulties, 1. Wind, 2. Storm, 3. Sand. each wall will throw your ship through a loop in a myriad of different ways, and conquering the walls will give you and your crew a great sense of accomplishment!
12. Progression, progression in the game doesn't come in your standard experience and levels, instead, it comes from knowledge. Knowledge is power, right? you use knowledge to learn ship building schematics to add components such as engine and wings and cannons to your ship, how do you gain knowledge? Scanning! you're given a scanning tool (you never lose it) and you equip it and scan everything to learn and gain knowledge from practically everything you scan, fun tip, if you scan an islands ground, it'll tell you which community member created the island you're currently exploring!
13. Ship-to-Ship Combat, the skyship battles can be fierce, and they can last for HOURS! they're fast pacced, intense, and
all the action you'll ever need. when it's a fair fight. I'll elabourate on this later...
Ok! now there are many more I could mention, but for now, I'll move onto the CONs:-
1. The Glitches, Oh the glitches, I said I love this game, but it's most definitely a love hate relationship, yes, there are so many glitches, unfortunately, some of these can be game breaking, which Bossa openly admits when you start up the game, they are working on it, and I guess it'#s to be expected as the game is still in early access, but it doesn't make them any less annoying
2. The Community, Strange right? how can "The Community" be both a PRO and CON? well put simply, there's a dark side to everything on the internet, and Worlds Adrift is no different. Sky Pirates, Bandits, Internet Trolls, They call themselves many names, but what they call themselves is of little import, they're griefers, their sole purpose is to ruin your fun, as of right now in Worlds Adrift, there is only Open World PvP, which means that any game is fair game, and what's deemed "fair game" is REEEEALLY sketchy. But, people will always use this for an excuse to justify their griefing of other players. Steps have been taken to try "stop" griefing, but in what seems to be the communities opinion, not enough, I've heard this statement many times, and honestly, I think it's so true, "This game will never make it out of early acces simply because of all the griefing." unfortunately griefing has put Bossa in a tough spot, as the can't ever fully STOP PvP, because right now, PvP is a limiter, it slows down progression, otherwise everyone and their mom would get through to the high tier zones and have everything unlocked, in which case, people would get bored of the game quickly, but in my opinion, as of right now, the power is in too much favor of the griefer, as the people who attack have very little to nothing to lose, and everything to gain, it's even bad enough that there are porofession STREAMERS who just stream them griefing other players, and IMHO, if it's got to that point then yeah, it's a big problem.
So to summerise, the game is great, it appeals to many different aspects of players wants from a game, like exploration, to design and crafting, to flight, to air battles, and to the games credit, it pulls them off really well, but adakr side of the community if this games major downfall, with the glitches a VERY close second, and the go hand-in-hand, I find they both come up at exactly the same time.
So, Do I recommend you buy this game? EHHH, that's a really tough question, you see, the game itself is a good, fun game, I mean I easily put in 170 hours within 5 weeks and I'm still going strong, but right now, it can be extremely hard to enjoy with all the griefers. and I wouldn't recommend playing solo, as because of the CONs, it makes it near impossible to play.
Hope that helps! See you in the Skies!
