I haven't played a Tower Defense game in years. I got h this one on sale, let it sit for a bit, and then decided to check it out. And... I am glad I did. Yeah, I know. I don't have a ton of time in. Yet. That will change,

Pros:
  • Singleplayer. No a-holes coming in and destroying your defenses just for sheets and giggles. It's all on you, you vs. the AI. I like that. Idiot griefers in MP TD games in the past are why I stopped playing. Not having to deal with them here is a HUGE plus.
  • Not "easy". It is easy to pick up, but can already tell in my short playtime, that it will not be easy to master. You need good strategy and planning, even early on.
  • Interersting story to the game. Reading the pages as you unlock them adds a nice element.
  • Nice graphics and audio. Nothing spectacular, but nothing ugly either. It's bright enough and colorful enough to captivate, without being blinding with flashes and flying particles everywhere. The ambient sounds are realistic and not overwhemingly loud or distracting.

Cons:
  • Needs a little more of a Tutorial for new players, and those who are not familiar with Tower Defense games. But this is a minor thing, there is a Tutorial Booklet with all of the neccessary commands, it just does not explain to a first-timer how things work, and how they work together or against each other. Game is forgiving though- you can go back and replay any field until you get the hang of it.
  • May be a bit overpriced at full price ($10 USD), for what you are getting.
  • Steam Achievements- if you are hoping for a quick and easy 100% game, this isn't the game for you, lol! There are 400+ Achievements, and the global stats show that many of them take a ton of time and effort to get. (But if you like challenging Achievements- this IS a game for you!)

Overall? 8/10. Not a "must have", but a solid "Should have", especially if you love Tower Defense and can get it on sale.

Now, I need to go and play this game some more. It calls to me...

Writing a new review, because my previous Positive review was out of date due to several new updates and bugfixes. (And just editing the old one was just too much of a PITA...)

For me- the game is a 10/10. A must have. But for recommending to others I will give it a solid 8/10, in it's current form.

Pros-
  • Challenging game, easy to learn but hard to master.
  • NO ZOMBIES OR INFECTEDS
  • Super Community, on Steam and online- one of the least toxic on Steam (though Trolls exist everwhere...)
  • Suspension of disbelief is relatively easy with this game. Some mechanics and content are not IRL realistic, but none are so unrealistic that you have to be muy loco to understand and work with them.
  • Dedicated development team and studio. They are very active on the Steam forums and their own online forums, very open and transparent, as much as they can be without spoiling Story Mode and other end game content. Don't let the recent shill-trolling attempts to discredit Hinterland fool you. A few trolls and their alts are doing a job trying to make the Devs look bad, much credit to Hinterland for not smashing them down, and handling it all very civilly.
  • Multiple Difficulty modes to choose from, from "relatvely easy" to "Insanity mode" - Pilgrim, Voyageur, Stalker and Interloper. Each has it's own challenges, and have you adjusting your playstyle to adapt and survive.
  • Permadeath. All Difficulty Modes. Every choice you make may be the one that gets you killed, or saves your life. For another day, at least.
  • Immersive art style and music. Art is a watercolor painting, Unity style, that suits the game very well. Not overly complex, not overly simple. The somewhat stark feeling of the art fits the stark nature of the game well. The music is haunting, foreboding and set to locations and events well also. It enhances the tension wihtout being overly loud and dramatic, like some survival games are. It's a personal and subjective thing. I love the art style and music, but your mileage may vary. Widely.

Cons-
  • Game can feel a bit tedious after you have survived for a long time. Especially if you "play it safe" and hang out on only 1 map, in one base, and don't explore and take chances. However, the game is not finished yet, and new content and Story Mode (when it comes out) should help with this. And the Challenges- (more linear, timed, and set goal-oriented , appropriately-named games are a really nice change of pace if Sandbox Mode becomes too drawn out.
  • Updates have slowed recently, with new bugs that need fixing, as the game nears completion. Honestly, this is more a Con because of the recent plague of trolls on the forums trying to discredit the Devs. That is more troublesome and aggravating than the actual wait for new content, bug fixes and mechanics tweaking. For me, at least. The Trolls will say otherwise. And will downvote this review as soon as they see the "Positive" thumbs up icon. *SMH*

All in all, I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a real challenge, and is looking for a more realistic survival situation than the many zombie and monster based survival games on the market. But... it is still in development, still unfinished. But the game is becoming much more than was originally envisioned by the Devs, promising a much richer, more immersive open-world Sandbox survival game, with a bigger and more packed Story Mode to come. But patience is key right now. Some of us have it, others do not. If you don't you may want to wait for v1.0 and Story Mode to hit full release before you buy.

For me it was worth paying full price for, definitely worth it if you can wait to get it on sale. Hundreds of hours played already, and I see myself playing hundreds more as new content is added, and after Story Mode is released. But your mileage may vary.

    UPDATED REVIEW

Yep. I am still playing. Yep. The game is still my favorite game.

After the game went gold, there were some bugs (still a few around), but the devs and tech guy do listen to all feedback, positive and negative, and have taken steps to adress the bugs as quickly as they can humanly do so, and to make changes t the game to make it better. An update (possibly a big one for Survival Mode) is in the works for Decemeber of 2017, with the Story Mode's remaining episodes pushed back into 2018 so Hinteland can make changes and make the Wintermute Story Mode more enjoyable.

I was not thrilled with Wintermute when it first came out, myself. And I will honestly say I felt disappointed. But... I had played Survival Mode for so long, that when a new game, similar to Survival, but different, that did not let me do my own thing, all of the time, came out... there was a shock reaction.

I have recently started playing the Wintermute Episodes again, and have had enough time to digest that it is a completely diferent game, with mechanics I know and enjoy, and a more linear direction. I still love Survival Mode, and play it often. And after starting Wintermute over, and playing it without expecting it to be Survival Mode with NPC's, I am quite enjoying it. Still a bit "tutorially" for a long time player, but for my husband and kids 9who play on the XBox One version), it was good to have the teaching. Not sure if Hinterland plans to make changes to Episodes 1 & 2, but I have a gut feeling that Episodes 3, 4 & 5 will be different. These devs DO listen t player feedback, both positive and negative. And they do make changes based on it, as long as it fits their vision for their game.

I am thrilled with the game, still, and expect to remain so for many hundreds of hours yet to come.

Of course, as always, Your Mileage May Vary. Widely.

Update- HL gave me my Pancakes. :)

10/10 - A MUST have for those who can deal with heavy introspection...

The game is not really a game. It is a deeply personal and subjective experience, and journey into the innermost self, of you, the creator and the subject. And possibly of everyone else youever know or meet.

it is a dark experince, a bright expeience, a lost and confusing experience, and a sharply clear experience. All at once.

I don't know that I actually could spoil this for anyone, since it really is something deeply personal, and I feel the experience will be different for each person who explores this path. I do think it would not be terribly good for anyone without some good, solid self-awareness, or at least some self-awareness, looking for more. Probably not a good experience for anyone who is badly broken, totally not self-aware and those looking for soething kight, easy, and with no deep meanings or thoughts. It is hard to call it "enjoyable", perhaps "worthwhile" is a better term.

This experience made me stop and look at my own life, my deepest worries and fears, my reason for being, my motivations, my faults, my flaws, my wants and needs, my darkest places got ripped open a bit, just a bit. But it also made me think of my joys, my successes, my dreams, my impact on the world around me, the postivie things I have done. It's not all dark, but it could sure suck you into the depths if you have a tendancy to go there anyway.

Not a "pew-pew-pew" and grief you friends and total strangers kind of game. This does require a higher level of attention and thinking to even feel like you understood any of it. And after playing it, I am left with so many thoughts of "What if", "Should I, Could I, Would I" and "Could I have done better". Not in the game, but IRL. Really moved me deeply and shook me. And will keep shaking me for some time. Deeply human. It is so very deeply human...

Thank you for making this game, and making me wake up while walking the path you guided me on. I will walk this path with you again, and see what else it reveals about myself and others around me. And I hope Coda is happy and well, out there smewhere.

This game smells of elderberries, never watched Star Wars, still uses Windows Vista, has worse hair than a hamster, and your sister was born in The Maening Of Life, I bet!

10/10 for fans of Brit humor and Monty Python!

Simple mechanics, easy to learn, hard to master. Because the random words and phrases often seem mismatched. But that leads to some res ally hilarious insults. Like the one above (just substitute "conversation" for "game" for a real insult I constructed for a critical, combos and a total hit of over 50 on Father.) Father... you meet him at the last stage of a tournament, and Father is Morgan Freeman, I bet, sir!

Just a silly and very funny game to play alone against your CPU, or with other people. If you can get MP to work (seems to be a bug there with connecting to other random victims, lol!)

Obviously, with my Steam nickname, I love anything and everything Monty Python, so I had to pick this game up. I did get it on sale, but the full price is not expensive, and well worth the gigglesnorts I have already gotten out of the game. And I intend to get many more. It's a bit risque and downright degrading (if you understand British humor and insults), but minimal F Bombs and real crudeness (Lo Wang is Lo Wang, so...). It just makes me laugh when I am feeling angry or down, so I have to recommend it to anyone who needs to vent without *completely* disturbing the neighbors, with or without coconuts involved. Just good fun. :D

Overall Score: 8/10

I truly enjoyed ths is game, even with a few frustrations for 2 Steam Achievements not popping (Yes, I completed the requirements, but this may have been a Steam issue, not a game issue). Warning for those with young children or an aversion to profanity- the game has a ton of it, and there is no way to avoid it or turn it off. So if profanity and a good number of F Bombs droping bothers you, you should just stop reading now and avoid the game.

I will say this game will not be for everyone. It is very atmospheric, and VERY linear. I am not sure making different choices affects the outcome of the game at all. Hwever, I will play it again, to try and get those last 2 cheevos, and to see if or how different choices affect the game progression.

The art style was quite beatuiful, bright, crisp watercolor paintings. with just the right amount of texture and detail to make it believable, but not too busy to look at for long perods of time. Lighting and shadows were good, some clipping issues with terrain or fauna (trees, shrubs), but not much. I play on a toaster... running a GeForce 740 GT. And thogh I did have 1 or 2 noticable fps spikes, they were brief and not significant to break immersion for me. YMMV. It's a Untiy Engine game, so my toaster may run it better than a higher end rig. Unity is finicky.

I won't spoil anything. I found the story to be engaging, though it seemed like my choices in actions and dialogue did not matter as much as I thought they would. Brief and tiny complaint- the time allowed for replying to the other lookout is short, so don't sneeze, cough, or blink while playing, lol! You can explore off the paths you need to find to reach goals and areas the story directs you to, but it really is not open-world or sandboxy. If you hate directed, scripted and more linear games, this is not going to be for you.

Many say they feel the ending was too anticlimactic. Perhaps for some it will be, For me it fit with the mystery in the game, and left me wondering what had really gone on the whole time. It left me imagining what my character and the other lookout would be doing in the future after they were debriefed and went home.

Not for everyone, for sure. But for me, a very enjoyable, somewhat linear, story driven experience. I recommend it, though I will recommend waiting for a sale at this point, The game's, forums, Guides and the many YouTube Lets Plays could spoil the game very easily. So I recommend not reading or watching any, or seriously limiting reading or watching. I had more fun when i got lost and had to figure out for myself where I was and where I needed to go. And getting attacked by a raccoon and finding a turtle (one of the cheevos that did not pop in spite of me taking it home...). Some flaws, but overall a good game that I think I will enjoy playing again. But not likely to have much replayability beyond that for me.

I really wanted to like this game. I really tried to. I just couldn't, for a number of significant reasons.

Overall Rating- 4.9/10 : I wish I could give a Neutral Rating, but since I can't, I have to go negative. I just can't recommend this game, at any price over 85% off with a clear conscience.

Now, I hope you understood that, up there. ^^^
Or will read further to gain an understanding.

I did not hate the game, I just did not feel it lived up to it's hype or advertisements. The great potential it had was wasted, completely. The game does have some really beautiful and creepy graphics. But a few pretty or interesting screenshots does not make a good game. It just does not warrant a Positive review in my opinion.

Pros:
  • Nice graphics with caveats (see Cons).
  • Music is good and fits the game well, but caveats again (see Cons).
  • Good concept- sadly wasted however.
  • Mostly easy Steam achievments, even the "missables" are hard to miss, except for "The Mist". (I had to resort to looking at a Guide after I completed the game blind, to see how to pop that cheevo.)
  • Trading Cards and Steam Achievements- achievements aren't difficult, and the TC's drop quickly and have a decent gem value. Honestly, this is the biggest "Pro" of the game.

Cons:
  • Did not live up to it's potential or advertised hype. The second video on the Store page had a Dev compare it to a Stephen King novel. Not even close. It's like comparing "Green Eggs And Ham" to "The Stand".
  • HORRIBLY optimized. My rig far exceeds minimum requirements. I had severe stuttering, huge fps spikes, and a few *almost* rubberbanding incidents, dropped to 1 fps and then shot back to 45+ fps suddenly for no apprent reason while moving me a wee bit backwards. My GPU didn't even break a sweat, but the performance issues and fails really broke any immersion I could get into. It was constant, and made the game choppy, and almost unplayable.
  • Graphics - Although some of the scenes had a nice, creepy feel thanks to the graphics, many things were too dark, too light, too blurred to read (letters and notices in particular, even in fullscreen, were so hard to see and read that I had my face planted with my nose touching my large, widescreen, good quality and resloution, backlit monitor, squinting to try to make out the blurry text- pointless aggrivation from this.) And yes, I adjusted every setting in the game, and on my PC and NVIDIA Control panel, all to no avail.
  • Music- Though it fit the game, it was badly timed and repetitive, and telegraphed the game's progression too much, too far in advance. The build up of the music too far in advance of a "scare" made the scare too predictable to have nay real effect, and the build up music often lasted for long minutes before the "scare" or "event" occurred.
  • Pacing- the pacing on this game was awful IMHO. Some parts were too fast, many were to slow. The ending? Slower than a snail on thorazine. Do the same thing over and over, until you are screaming "Just make it STOP sometime this year!!!", to get to a completely anticlimactic ending. Awful.
  • ZERO replay value. ZERO.

I was really hoping for something more chilling, scary, thrilling, gripping or at least immersive from this game. I got a poorly optimized and overhyped, dingy, Dollar Store paperback novella instead. It had great potential, which I honestly feel was completely wasted on this game. A true disappointment from this studio. A real shame.

I just can't recommend this game to suspense, thriller, horror, psychological thriller, scary game fans with a clear conscience. If you get it as part of a bundle from a bundle site (as I did), it's worth a playthrough, just because you have the game key. Just don't have high expectations like I did. Full price? NUPE, never. If you can get it for 85% off or better here on Steam, pick it up if you have a few pennies to throw away for no good reason. Why not. Trading cards do drop quickly, and have decent gem values for the 3 drops you get.

10/10 - For myself, because the story and history moved me so much, and the game is so beautiful.
But...
8/10 - Overall recommendation, well worth it on sale or at full price, if you enjoy platformers with a twist and some mild to moderate challenge.

Pros:
  • Stunning art style, a mixed blend of beautiful 3D toon animation, photos, videos and 2D traditional Native imagery.
  • Cultural Insights - videos and photos of the Native peoples that the story revolves around. History shared in a unique and captivating way, showing how joy can be found even in the harshest conditions Nature and Life can throw at you, insights into the past and present of this almost lost culture.
  • Fun platformer game that can be played just for the game, or played to unlock the Insights to learn the traditions and history of the Native peoples of Alaska.
  • Unique!!! I have never played anything like this. It is an Experience, not just a game. An amazing way for the older generation to share their traditions with a younger, less traditional generation.
  • I loved the music in the game and the Native drum and singing in the Cultural Insights videos. The music fit the game and was more than just "pleasant", it is memorable in my opinion.

Cons:
  • Fun platformer, not too easy, not to hard. But controls are clunky on a keyboard and mouse. You cannot remap keybindings, and they can be a bit awkward with the exact timing needed to hit the right keys and pass each level. But still very playable, though I recommend a gamepad if you have one.
  • Unexpected sadness or "scares". If you watched the trailer video, and expected only cuteness with some challenge in the platforming, the violence may take you aback a bit. It is neccessary, as it tells a traditional story, from a culture where ups, downs, joy and sadness, great gifts and great loss are part of history and modern-day life. But parents may want to play the game before allowing a younger or more sensitive child play it. TL;DR- Parental Discretion is advised, even with the E-10+ ESRB rating. There is no "gore", but there are "scary" things.

I honestly highly recommend this game at full price for anyone who loves history and learning about Native cultures and life, and who enjoy platforemer games.
For those who want just a fantastic (but slightly clunky) platformer, and have no interest in the history and culture, I would recommend waiting for a sale, or checking for this game in a bundle from a legit bundling site.

Replay value? I haven't finished the game yet. But because I love hearing the Native language and music, hearing the stories told by the people in the Insight videos, seeing the photographs and the beautiful and varied artwork... I can see myself playing this again just for the feels. It captivated me, and it touched something inside me deeply.

    Your mileage may vary.

6.5/10 Overall

Kinda fun little timing-phsyics puzzle game. Kinda. If you really enjoy cursing as you replay the same level 20 times to get the blue box to stick to the end platform to get the level done.

Achievements? Easy, Quick 100% game.

Replayability? Not really. Once was enough, not worried about the Trading Cards or Badge. Though I may just idle it to get the last 2 Gem TC's. Just because... gems.

Do I like the game? Hard to say. It was unique and different, I'll give it that. Really not much skill to it, more timing and some random luck. But it does have a cheerful appearance and music. And clicking everything on screen randomly, and getting achievements for just doing that was, well... interesting. And it has explosions. Lots of explosions. +1 for all the explosions.

Would I pay full price? Well, I didn't, and I have mixed feelings about the 84¢ USD I paid for it. It is worth maybe 50¢ USD for the amount of time played. But, supporting an Indie developer makes me glad I spent the pennies on it.

Not a must have by any means. But a pleasant little curse-inducing little time killer. :)

Titan Quest and Titan Quest: Immortal Throne used to be my all time favorite aRPG games. Still are, in their original forms, the old physical disc copies developed by THQ, before they went under.

Nordic bought the IP's when THQ was going under, and apparently also bought the rights to use "THQ"in their name, and they became THQNordic. The mashed the old TQ and TQ:IT together made some balance changes, optimized the game slightly, and called it Titan Quest: Anniversary Edition.

It was fine. It was the old games, put together, basically the same as the originals I knew and loved, none of the changes really altered the game too much. And the bugs that had always been in the game were still there, in spite of Nordic saying they had fixed them, or were going to fix them. The Eye Of Chaos bug, where the Eye never drops, or drops but cannot be picked up.. still there. Supposedly fixed, but still there.

I could still live with running the same area 6 times to get the damned Eye to drop and let me pick it up, to finish the Quest it was needed for, to be able to progress in the game. Fine, we had been doing that for years anyway. Put up with it as a "quirk" or the game.

Then Nordic decided to add the Ragnarök DLC. Seeing that it cost as much as the base game, and that it was made by Pieces Interactive, who also has a part in some of the less well received DLC for the Magicka games, I decided to not buy the DLC right away, waiting to see how many bugs and issues surfaced, and how they were handled, if they were handled.

Base game only. Loot drops from Bosses, Majestic and Ornate chests... Ragnarök- only items, that as a base game-only owner, i can see but cannot pick up or use. Loot tables for base game-only got smaller, big time. Merchants now have 1/3 - 1/2 their shop filled with Ragnarök-only items, that you cannot buy or use if you don't own the DLC and have it installed. Getting kitted out just got worse than it ever was. Interactive items, components and quest items from the Ragnarök DLC show up in the base game, you can only wonder wtf they are, and why you can look at them sparkling there, but cannot touch them.

Yep. Nordic, you killed the love I had fo the original TQ:AE, love that I had only because it was a mer of the original TQ and TQ:IT. You did not make it better. You made it worse, basically catering to the Multiplayer/co-op screaming kiddies, and dumbing down the game for them, while making it more boring and frustrating for long time fans who played since TQ Gold days. Making it feel like you must spend an additional $20 USD, to get a "complete" game, when the old LDC-free game was already complete.

You killed the game for me. I cannot recommend this game any longer. Under any circumstances, even under great discount price. Because the DLC will not sell at that low of a rpcie for some time, and still has massive issues that need fixed, according to players on the forums here and on the other platforms this game has been sold on. Sorry, but if you see THQNordic buying a game, or see their name appear on a game you used to enjoy... blow it a kiss, say goodbye, and watch that game become something totally unbalanced and broken once THQN starts playing with it.

I'll stick to my old physical disc copies from the Real THQ.

Fun little Time-water

I remember playing the original 7 Wonders game and several of the follow ups in the past. I can't remember where I played them, but I do remember the art style, and building the "Wonders". So, let's get into it here...

Pros:
-Game is exactly what it is advertised as: A Casual Match 3 Puzzle game. (And by Casual, I mean VERY Casual...)
-Nice music
-Nice graphics
-Runs smoothly on a toaster, or a potato, or a turnip... would run well on a mobile device (which is what it seems best suited for...)
-Workers are still as cute and annoying as always, annoying enough to be cute or vice versa
-Board rotation (allowed constantly w/o needing to earn it), and needing to move a special piece through a set path, to lock it into a specified location to finish each level is different from many Match 3 games, so a few twists on the standard.
-EASY, with a very generous timer and power ups (This is both good and bad... good if you want very casual and easy...)

Cons:
-EASY, possibly TOO easy for anyone looking for a challenge. Timer allows far too much time to really ever feel any imperative to make matches quickly, power ups are almost too easy to get and too plentiful. Totally subjective.
-Price- I got a key for free, so I can't complain. But I would NOT recommend this game at full price ($10 USD is way too much), would not recommend unless you get it for 75% off or more.

Game has replayability to a degree, since it does rely on random placement of the tiles you have to match. I have played for a few hours, 15 minutes at a time. I could keep playing this as a pure, casual, relaxed time waster. But it is at the bottom of my list if I want a challenge tbh.

Fun little game, but don't get this thinking it is as "difficult" as earlier versions of the game, The frustration and challenge were removed in this version. That said, it would be a great game for kids, because the satisfaction of completing levels and successfully building a Wonder are almost guaranteed. But a possible disappointment to fans of earlier versions of the game.

6/10 Overall Would buy at 75% off or better, would never buy at full price of $9.99 USD
