It's still as good as I remembered.

Imagine an RTS game where you can't rebind your controls. In a game that uses arrow keys to pan and middle mouse to rotate camera. What sort of evil developer does this.

I played through Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1 and their abysmally bug ridden launch. This is typical of DICE and anyone who is familiar with them expects as such. But at their core these games were good. Once the bugs were patched out, QoL improved and minor oversights were ironed out these games provided countless hours of enjoyable playtime.


BF4 is a great example of this. Despite its infamously buggy launch, DICE LA (currently known as Ripple Effect) took great care of BF4. They patched the game into a fine state, listened to community expectations, added new maps and free DLCs. Because of this BF4 turned into one of the best titles in the franchise. The high player count this game still has, after 8 years since release, is a testament to DICE LAs achievement.


I went into BF2042 with similar expectations. A rough launch, but nothing that cannot be remedied. Except that was not the case. Bugs and glitches can be fixed. The fundamental issues this game has at its core cannot be fixed. And these issues were actual design choice made by DICE willingly. Knowing DICE and EA I don't see them reverting these horrible decisions either.


At the center of all these issues lie the Specialist system. Which was developed with the sole purpose of attracting the hero-shooter crowd. A crowd that will buy a game for 70 dollars, then pay 20 dollars more for Pickle Rick skin for their favorite hero and move on to the next trendy game after 50 hours or so. Specialist system adds nothing special to the game. The things these funky hobos can do, could have been done by old soldier classes with a unique gadget slot just as easily. But generic soldiers don't do hip and groovy one-liners while doing the fortnite dance. That is unacceptable. How will hero-shooter crowd even play this.


Lack of scoreboard, K/DR, VOIP, all chat, statistics menu and high TTK artificially propagated by bloom, all of these were done solely to enhance the Specialist system for this audience that was never part of the Battlefield community. DICE wants these type of players to jump in a match and get few kills to feel good about themselves, without being used as a mop to wipe the floor by experienced players. Which in turn will compel them to buy the cowboy skin for Mackay and sassy voice quips for Angel off EA store. And they can't do that if they realize they are constantly at the bottom of the scoreboard. They will never improve either since they don’t know who the better players are and what they are doing that makes them better at the game.


I have nothing against hero-shooters. But Battlefield is not that. This review will never end if I start listing everything that is wrong with BF2042. You can look through any detailed reviews in Steam for that, but they will all come to the same conclusion. BF2042 is a soulless cash grab designed to cater to an audience that has the attention span of an ADHD patient. This game is not for you or for me, people who supported this franchise for decade.


Such a development has been long time coming with so many talents leaving from DICE Stockholm over the years. Now this company is a passionless autocracy ruled by EA executives. You might as well check out Embark Studios, a company established by former DICE employees, and what they are up to. Because as a game Battlefield 2042 is irredeemable without a massive overhaul which will never happen. Now excuse me while I attempt to get my money's worth out of this game somehow.

So this is the power of meth.

This game is mad fun. Had an absolute blast with my friends. Recommended to play coop.
