This was a really great experience. It had me with full immersion instead of thinking what the game would allow. For example, there was a character that was stuck far away from me. Normally to "Rescue" NPCs you must go up to them and initiate dialogue in most games. I threw a teleport scroll to him, and he knew what to do. A cage was on fire, so I threw a barrel of water at it and it extinguished. The world felt alive.

Unfortunately, the vast amount of bugs need you to metagame and search things up (inevitably spoiling the game as spoilers are everywhere) because, I can not make this up, ESSENTIAL QUEST NPCS will IMMEDIATELY DIE if you happen to load an area during this current patch. So I can't play on my current playthrough since the game is cursed. Let me hop on my alternate save as a necromancer. And they broke the animate dead spell...

The longer this game exists the buggier and buggier it has become and I don't see any way to revert patches. Yes, the patches are the ones causing the issues. The patches get their own hotfixes. I would recommend this game at the time I started playing. I wouldn't recommend it now, because it's currently not even playable now. If you interact with a Vendor to buy or sell items, your save will fail. Luckily my third save is right at the point where I need to BUY an ITEM for a vendor for the main questline.

The immersion and sense of wonder is gone, and now due to the unreliability of the game every time I see a corpse I must go to google and find out if a bug caused this guy to die, instead of wondering if there is someone hostile nearby that killed them.

Edit: Leaving initial review but changing to recommended as most problems are solved.

I tried this and man, I wanted to like it. My first impression is this thing looks genuinely awful. Diablo Immortal, which can be played on phones, looks better.

Than comes their business practices. I'm not one for like, researching developers. But what I noticed is they dropped a huge patch revamping Act 1 the day after I bought this game. What actually occurred is they added the micro transaction shop, and made towns a hub-like area like most games already do. And their inability to do this caused them to softlock literally everyone for hours out of the game until reverting their hub-town experience. New characters were stuck until logging and redoing the tutorial, and old characters were just unable to log in.

There is constant rubberbanding every few seconds. Literally constantly. Movement skills are impossible to use and feel janky, and overall the game feels bad. It feels like it's meant to be a phone game with 3.5 stars on Google Play. Not an actual PC game.

Can't even make it to endgame at this rate, as it's a true and honest gamble on whether going between zones will send you back to character select. And the worst part is the community seems to be totally okay with this. I can't see how anything will change when nobody is willing to say "Hey, you shouldn't hide behind early access forever as a justification for a bad product." I already know I'm not missing much though, the entirety of Act 1 has been the same temple tileset with purple corrupted roots everywhere. I enjoy lore in games, even PATH OF EXILE lore. I couldn't get into this though.

Do NOT even try to play this with someone else. The D/C inbetween zones goes from 25/75 to probably 80/20. Sad part is the combat is ARPG combat, which I enjoy and is hard to get wrong, so I could find myself liking it. But not in this state. You should feel bad for charging people money for this. If that was my livelihood and what I expected to feed my family, I'd be embarrassed and anxious simultaneously.

Update: With 1.0 announced I tried this game again. The game does not work at all for me anymore. There's literally thousands of different threads that people wrote online with thousands of various problems and each with their own convoluted fix. Obviously my PC is not the issue here.

Update: 1.0 Released: Game will actually start now, so I was right that it wasn't my computer. Servers cannot handle players though. This game wants to maintain a low population count obviously. They have Streamer priority, though. Cool!

56 hours in, I am still scared by bible thumpers, but people with literal sticks aren't a threat anymore.

This game single handedly has convinced me to follow the developers on any game they make from here on out, while also giving me motivation to go and read the books the game came from.

I won't spoil anything story related, but this whole game is a beautiful cause and effect. And it's not a perfect world. There's no easy answer. Sometimes helping and doing what appears to be the right thing unfolds in such a tradegy that it only makes you realize why Geralt, the protagonist, is so inhumanly emotionless. Doing the right thing isn't always the answer, and while the gameplay is Shadows of Mordor styled but very improved, I found myself wanting more story than swordfighting.

The next paragraph or so is written in spoilers, it's not a major quest by any means, but if you're interested in living every moment blind then don't read ahead, however if you're stubborn it should help you understand just how convoluted even minor side quests can be.
There's a contract for a local village to hunt down a beast that killed a hunter's wife. At the scene of the crime and putting people's stories together of witnesses there was only one victim, but two people left, and wolf marks on the ground. So, a werewolf. Upon meeting the were wolf you can kill him outright, as intended. OR by choosing to go to town to confront the person who said the victim went alone, you learn a bit more of the story. The Wife (victim) never knew of her husband, the Hunter's, Lycanthropy. The sister however knew and wanted the Hunter for herself, so she had the wife follow him one day. He turns, eats her, and locks himself in the basement.

After a disheartening battle the werewolf, almost bloody, gains sentience and reasoning. The sister comes in and admits she was the one who convinced the wife to go to the werewolf's hideout to wait out his transformation. I chose to let him kill her, and afterwards he came up and said he had nothing to live for, and to end his misery.

Afterwards I went into the house and found his diary, all of which was never hinted at by any means, and it retells his story of trying to keep his curse out of sight, only using it to kill monsters that would terrorize their own village.

So, now with their guardian monster which they never knew existed dead, they would most likely be attacked at another point in the unforeseen future by something simple swords couldn't hold off. And Geralt, emotionless as he acts, carries on. But you know what you did. You heartless bastard.

It's sad there's probably almost a hundred characters and I can only ever see the same 6 in matchmaking. It's really telling on the balance of the game.

Please revert your recent update, you made performance way worse.

Half of my time spent playing this game is actually tabbed out reading how to do something or on the trade site, or in my hideout completing a trade. Regardless of this, it is still a good game.
